WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA! Fraternity and Sorority Life at the University of Iowa provides an opportunity for you to belong, serve, lead, and thrive. It’s part of the university’s commitment to helping you be as successful as possible both inside and outside the classroom.

We know that being part of a student organization will help you get the most out of your college experience, so I encourage you to explore what FSL has to offer. You will discover a community focused on academic support, leadership experiences, positive social interactions, and fostering diversity and inclusion. The university has a long and proud history of fraternity and sorority life on campus, and we continue to work hard to ensure the community’s future success.

If you're still not sure that fraternity and sorority life is right for you, you can learn about each organization through the recruitment processes. You can also view the scorecard for each FSL chapter by visiting fsl.uiowa.edu/community/scorecard. They were created to provide all the information needed to help you make the best decision for you.

I’m happy you’re a Hawkeye and hope you have a wonderful experience now that you’re on campus. Please remember, we’re all here to help you as needed—and my door is always open, so don’t hesitate to stop by 249 IMU.

STEPPING AND STROLLING Stepping and Strolling is an expressive dance form that was created by African American fraternities in the 1970s. NPHC members move together in a line expressing pride for their organization. In this line, members may show this pride through the use of their organization’s call, sign or historical information, ritual/custom dances, etc. All of this is done through movements that are unique to each organization.

Iowa NPHC hosts signature events each Fall and Spring that serve as a great way for NPHC, MGC and other organizations to show their dance and strolling skills

DIVINE NINE PLOTS The Divine Nine plots at the University of Iowa are near the Danforth Chapel in Hubbard Park, a place of significance for some of the chapters of NPHC. The plots were dedicated in the Fall of 2016 to celebrate the rich history of Black Greek lettered organizations at UI. Historically, plots are located in spaces on campus where chapter members congregate, celebrate, and give fellowship to one another.

DIVINE 9 ROOM 335, IMU

The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)/ Divine Nine is a collaborative organization of nine historically African American, international, black Greek-lettered fraternities and sororities. The nine NPHC organizations collectively are referred to as the "Divine Nine." This room honors and celebrates the significant contributions - from 1914 to the present - of NPHC chapters and their members to the University of Iowa and the Iowa Memorial Union.

MGC ROOM 337, IMU

The Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) serves all MGC organizations as a support group, governing body in their events and communities to promote multicultural awareness, and to improve relations among all campus fraternities and sororities. The MGC defines “cultural” to include race, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation.

The University of Iowa is proud to be home to the founding of Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity, Inc. in 1986 and to Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority, Inc. in 1990. The Alpha chapters of both of these organizations continue to be thriving organizations within the University of Iowa Fraternity and Sorority community.

FRATERNITY AND SORORITYinvolvement opportunities

Hawkeye Service Break is an annual service trip each spring semester. A group of fraternity and sorority members travels to Indianapolis, IN to engage in a service immersion experience. This trip coincides with a three credit hour course focused on service-learning and social justice. While in Indianapolis, the students have the opportunity to engage with community members first hand and visit inter/ national fraternity/sorority headquarters.

Order of Omega is a national Fraternity and Sorority Honor Society for the top 3% of fraternity men and sorority women based on the tenets of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Order of Omega’s purposes are to recognize students who have attained a high standard of leadership within the community, to bring together those members who will help shape the community and the University, and to join faculty, alumni, and students with the intent of helping and understanding one another.

Rho Lambda is a National Sorority Leadership Recognition Society. Rho Lambda seeks to honor those women within the sorority community who have exhibited the highest qualities of leadership and service to their sorority community and their sorority. They are women who have furthered the ideals and principles of the sorority community throughout their years of sorority affiliation. Rho Lambda is only comprised of the top 10% of campus sorority women.

FSL Leadership Class meets each spring semester. Our Fraternity and Sorority Life Staff and campus partners teach a three-credit leadership class for fraternity and sorority students. Discussion topics and assignments are geared specifically toward leaders with the Fraternity and Sorority Community.

The University of Iowa Dance Marathon The University of Iowa Dance Marathon has been providing emotional and financial support for children with cancer and their families since 1994. To date, Dance Marathon has raised over 30 million dollars. The Fraternity and Sorority Community plays a vital role in the success of Dance Marathon each year and in 2020, FSL contributed over $573,000. In fact, members of the Fraternity and Sorority Community were responsible for starting the organization.

Circle of Sisterhood is supported by all four councils through annual fundraising programs. The Circle of Sisterhood is a foundation focused on leveraging the collective wisdom and influence of sorority women to support entities around the world that remove educational barriers for girls and women, uplifting them from poverty and oppression. To date, UIowa FSL has donated over $8,000 to the Circle of Sisterhood and looks forward to continuing their annual fundraisers for such an important cause!

ANTI-HAZING POLICY Hazing is defined as any intentional or reckless action or situation, with or without consent, that endangers a student or creates risk of injury, mental or physical discomfort, harassment, embarrassment, and/or ridicule for the purpose of initiation into, affiliation with, or as a condition for continued membership in any student organization, fraternity, sorority, or team recognized by the University of Iowa Student Government or by any other University sponsor or department. Hazing may occur on or off campus.

Acts of hazing include, but are not limited to: compulsory alcohol or drug consumption; physical brutality; psychological cruelty; public humiliation; morally degrading activities; forced confinement; creation of excessive fatigue; required removal or destruction of public or private property; or any other activity that endangers the physical, mental, psychological, or academic well-being and/or safety of an individual. Officers and members of a student organization who knowingly permit such prohibited activity to occur without taking reasonable preventative measures are subject to the Code of Student Life as an individual, even if they did not administer the hazing activity

NATIONAL HAZING PREVENTION WEEK Each fall at the end of September, fraternity and sorority members at Iowa celebrate National Hazing Prevention Week. During this week, fraternity and sorority members come together to attend programs and events that focus on education and prevention on a variety of risk-related topics.

Check the fsl.uiowa.edu website for more information about this values-driven week

UI FRATERNITY AND SORORITY HISTORY The story of the University of Iowa Fraternity and Sorority Community started in 1866 when Beta Theta Pi was established on campus as the first fraternity founded west of the Mississippi. Almost 15 years later, the first women’s chapter, Kappa Kappa Gamma, received its charter at Iowa. From the beginning, both fraternities and sororities recognized the value that brotherhood, sisterhood and siblinghood could bring to the college experience. One hundred fifty four years later we are a community of over 3,500 students who are members of one of our 48 fraternities and sororities. This includes 20 Interfraternity Council chapters, 5 National Pan Hellenic Council chapters, 9 Multicultural Greek Council chapters, and 14 Panhellenic Council chapters. 3232

Financial responsibility is important for all college students. Every member of a fraternity or sorority agrees to be fiscally responsible as a student and as a chapter member. Fees may include local and national membership dues, room and board (if the chapter has a structure) and other one-time fees such as initiation or new member fees. The charts below provide you financial information by council. They include the high, low and average costs within that council.

For 2020-2021, the average cost of living in a university-owned residence hall per year for a double room and unlimited meals is $11,590.00.

While fraternity and sorority structures are recognized student housing, their residential houses are not located on University property and are privately owned. Questions about individual housing facilities should be directed to the chapter’s local House Corporation Board. Further financial information will be provided during recruitment/membership intake.
