Introduction
The next 7 weeks you will be doing something different from your usual practice. Usually, you are present in class for English three hours a week. This lesson series is a blended course which means that you don’t have to be in class all the time. About 70 per cent of the course is followed by means of distant learning: your own home or with a group of students at another location.
Topic
The topic of this lesson series is ´the History of the English Language´. We start with the Old English period and we will end with the Modern English (the English that is spoken worldwide today). The lesson series consists of 7 units. One unit will be followed each week.
Website
The website link is http://keepcalmlearnenglishnow.weebly.com/.
What can I expect from a blended course?
Instead of a teacher in class you will have to work on the lesson series independently with a group or alone. You can do the course at home or at another location, but it is very important that you have a computer with Internet access. Some lessons will be followed in class. See the overview of the lesson series below. Overview lesson series
* It is expected when you have to be at the F2F meeting that you will have done the lessons and study box of that week. In class you will be working on another assignment.

In class / F2F meetings
It is expected that when the F2F meetings are held (Unit 4 and Unit 6) that you have prepared the lessons and study boxes at home. Three hours English a week are scheduled:
1st lesson of the week: prepare lesson plan and study box no. 1 of the unit
2nd lesson of the week: prepare lesson plan and study box no. 2 of the unit
3rd lesson of the week: be present in class for the F2F meeting.
At home / school / other location
The other units (Unit 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7) need to be done at home or another location. You may choose the best study place. In some weeks you will have to do an assignment with a group. So, it is advisable to stay in contact with your group all the time (Facebook chat, Google Hangout, Skype or meet at a specific location). It is also possible to do the course in a computer room at school.
Teacher guidance
The teacher is always available for you. If you have any questions or problems or you just want to have some feedback, you can always ask your teacher for support. This can be done in various ways:
- You can e-mail the teacher ([email protected]) - You can skype with the teacher. - You can ask the teacher to log on to Google Hangouts - You can contact the teacher by phone call.
The teacher will be available:
- on the hours that you will be having the English lesson - from 7.00 p.m. – 8.00 p.m. - in the weekend from 10.00 a.m. – 12.00 a.m.
It is preferred to make an appointment with your teacher by e-mail.
The contents of the lesson series
Unit: Each lesson consists of a lesson, study box and assignments. One lesson (e.g. 1.1) and one study box (e.g. 1.2) takes about 50 minutes (one lesson hour in your time schedule). Steps to be taken are:
1. you read the introduction in the unit page 2. you read the introduction on the lesson page
3. you watch the film on the study box page and you answer the reflective questions and do the assignments.
Each unit is about a certain period. For instance, unit 1 is about the Old English period.
Lesson
The lesson series gives you an introduction about the sub topic. For instance, lesson 1.1. is about the Celts from the Old English period.
Study box
The study box is the actual ‘lesson’. Here you will have to watch a video first. It gives you all the information you need to answer the reflective questions and assignments. Next step is that you answer the reflective questions which are based on the information in the video. The last step is that you go to the assignment page. Here you can download a Word document with all the assignments.
Assignments
All assignments are mentioned in a downloadable Word document. This is deliberately done because you only have to save the document under the same name so that you can type your answers below the questions. The assignments are divided into:
- reflective questions (which are mentioned on the study box page) - F2F questions: an assignment that needs to be done with the whole group or
individually. - Individual / group assignments.
Type of assignments
1. Facebook: some assignments need to be uploaded to a special created Facebook page #keepcalmlearnenglishnow. On the website you can go directly to this page when clicking on the F-icon. It is important to have a Facebook account. If you don’t have a Facebook account, you will have to make one.
2. For some assignments you will have to visit a certain web page. You can find all the necessary information on the ePortfolio page. For example, you will have to make a Woordle about a certain topic on the web page www.wordle.net. You can access all necessary web pages from the website. The links are also mentioned in the Word document ‘assignment’.
3. Google Hangout: can be used to have a chat with others. 4. Skype: can be used to have a (video)chat with others. 5. ePortfolio: this will be discussed in the next paragraph. 6. Forum: (some) reflective questions will have to be discussed with your team
on the website itself. You will also work on your presentation skills and it is expected that you will learn with various online ICT tools/programs.
ePortfolio
From start (Unit 1) to finish (Unit 7) you will have to work on your ePortfolio in itslearning. Your final ePortfolio will be marked and you do not have to complete a test in the end of this lesson series. We all learn in different ways, but an ePortfolio gives a teacher and yourself much more information about what you have learnt during the course. Secondly, you can personalise your pages in itslearning and you will be doing a lot of different assignments. The assignments focus on:
1. Read: reading and listening 2. Reflect: reflective questions 3. Display: creativity (recording a video or creating a mind map) 4. Do: put the learnt matter into practice. This last step is actually working on
your ePortfolio. In itslearning you first work on your work portfolio and you submit the whole ePortfolio online after having finished unit 7. This is your actual ePortfolio. All information can be found on the web page ePortfolio of the website. In appendix 1 you will find the whole overview of the units. Each unit you will be working on your work portfolio and you add the Word documents with the answers to the working portfolio. You teacher will be giving your feedback about the assignments weekly. At the end of the lesson series, when you have uploaded all your final assignments to the working portfolio on itslearning, you will have to submit your final ePortfolio
to the teacher.
Skills
At the end of this lessons series you have practised reading, listening, speaking and writing skills as well as vocabulary and grammar.
