Assessment Information

Overview In order for TP3 to make a judgement of competence, participants are required to

submit evidence of skills and knowledge held, and complete assessment tasks aligned to course work and competencies. At TP3 evidence of competence can be submitted and is collected in numerous formats including RPL, workplace based projects and other, formative and summative assessment tasks. Formative assessment tasks are those completed as coursework during training sessions. Summative assessments are workplace based projects/activities which are undertaken after training sessions. TP3’s assessment methodology is to encourage the provision of evidence which demonstrates knowledge and skills performed in a “live” work context and environment by the candidate. As such, the assessment process focuses on gathering evidence rather than undertaking formal exams or simulated activities.

Workplace assessments

Assessments are designed for you to complete in your workplace, mostly outside of course contact hours. If you cannot access a work environment where you can apply the necessary skills, contact the TP3 assessment team to make alternate arrangements.

Assessment resources

Assessments are designed so that you can easily find and access most resources and equipment you need to complete the tasks in your workplace.

When completing an assessment, you should refer to:

The assessment task

Any tools and/or templates provided with the assessment task

The relevant course materials (e.g. a course workbook), and

The TP3 Student Handbook

Student Portal The online Student Portal allows you to have quick access to qualification materials

and submit assessments online. Once enrolled in your qualification, you will be able to log in to the Student Portal. Once logged in you will have access to the following:

Pre-course work (if required)

Assessment tasks

Qualification Enrolment Form

Student Handbook

Assessment retention

TP3 is required as an RTO to securely retain all completed assessment items once submitted by the student. It is advised that you keep a copy of any work you complete as TP3 will not return your assessments once submitted.

Completion date

Assessments are due 12 weeks after the start date of the associated course. Please email [email protected] if you require an extension. To be eligible for a vocational qualification, you must successfully complete the course requirements, including all assessment tasks, within 2 years from the first date of enrolment in the qualification.

Competent (C) and Not Yet Competent (NYC)

Assessment results are reported in 2 ways:

Competent (C)

Not Yet Competent (NYC) TP3 Assessors conduct assessments in accordance with the standards and requirements of each unit of competency within a qualification as outlined in the Training Package.

Result = Competent

If your assessment result is Competent, we will send you a confirmation email to advise of the result. Once you have completed all required units, we will issue you with the relevant qualification (i.e. Certificate or Diploma) along with a transcript summarising the units of competency that you have completed.

Result = Not Yet Competent (NYC)

If your assessment result is Not Yet Competent in any part of an assessment task, we will ask you to resubmit additional evidence of competency in that area only. A TP3 Assessor will guide you through this process. TP3 provides the initial reassessment free of charge.

Appealing and assessment decision

TP3 is committed to providing a quality assessment process that is valid, reliable, flexible and fair.

If you are dissatisfied with the outcome of an assessment, we will attempt to resolve the issue and create an acceptable solution as soon as possible.

Our RTO Manager keeps records of all assessment appeals received.

Appeals process Our procedure for responding to an assessment appeal is as follows:

1. You raise the appeal in writing with our RTO Manager.

2. The RTO Manager, and the relevant TP3 Assessor, discuss the appeal.

3. The RTO Manager devises a solution and discusses it with you. The solution may involve a reassessment by another TP3 Assessor.

4. If your grievance still exists following reassessment, we recommend an independent assessment. If the grievance is proven and the independent assessor overturns the TP3 assessment, we will bear the cost of the independent assessment. If the independent assessor upholds our decision, you will bear the cost of the independent reassessment.

5. If the independent assessor affirms the TP3 assessment decision and you remain dissatisfied, we will advise you to appeal to ASQA, our registering body.

What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?

Students often have existing skills, knowledge and experience that may count towards the competencies required for a particular qualification. To gain recognition for your skills, knowledge and experience, you can apply to TP3 for Recognition of Prior Learning. The RPL process takes into account relevant formal training (conducted by industry or educational institutions), work experience (including informal training) and other life experience.

How does the RPL process work?

There are two pathways for you to achieve Recognition of Prior Learning:

Credit transfer (existing qualifications) - Credit transfer applies to students who have completed part of their course, or a similar course, through another RTO.

Evidence of competency - This form of RPL applies to students who have not completed formal qualifications but have evidence that they possess skills and knowledge that contribute to a unit of competency.

Recognising qualifications from other institutions

TP3 adheres to the principle of mutual recognition and accepts verified qualifications issued by RTOs and higher education institutions as evidence of a student’s competence in a subject area.

A certified copy of the qualification (e.g. degree, diploma or certificate) and its academic transcript must be provided as evidence of completion of the qualification.

Applying for RPL You can apply for RPL when you complete the Qualification Enrolment Form in class

or you can access it online from your personal student portal.

If you have further queries regarding RPL application, contact the Assessment Team at [email protected] to discuss your RPL options.

Glossary of Terms

Overview There are a lot of terms and jargon used in Vocational Education and Training. In this

section we explain some of the common terms and acronyms.

Assessment Assessment is the process of collection of evidence and making judgements on

whether competency has been achieved to confirm an individual can perform to the standard expected in the workplace, as expressed in the competency standards of a particular workplace and relative to the competencies contained in Training Packages.

Assessment tool A method for the gathering of evidence for assessment, such as a knowledge test or a

checklist of practical performance.

Assessor A person qualified to carry out an assessment and make an assessment decision.

AQF Australian Qualifications Framework. A nationally consistent set of qualifications for all

AQTF Australian Quality Training Framework. The nationally agreed recognition

The Australian Quality Training Framework is based on a quality assured approach to the registration of training organisations seeking to deliver training, assess competency outcomes and issue Australian Qualifications Framework qualifications and/or Statements of Attainment and ensures the recognition of training providers and the Australian Qualifications Framework qualifications and Statements of Attainment they issue, across Australia.

Competency The ability to perform duties and tasks to the standard of performance required in

Competency standard

Competency standards describe the skills and knowledge required by an experienced person to perform particular workplace functions, customised to the policies, procedures and performance standards of a particular enterprise.

Credit transfer The granting of status or credit, towards a qualification, by an institution or training

Australian Qualification Training Framework, stating that a person has achieved all the requirements for a qualification as specified in a nationally endorsed Training Package or accredited course. Qualifications are based on work organisation and are created from suites of units of competency and describe the competencies required to perform a particular job-role or function.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The acknowledgement of a person’s skills and knowledge acquired through previous training, work or life experience, which may be used to grant status or credit in a subject.

Registered Training Organisation (RTO)

An organisation registered by a state or territory recognition authority to deliver training and/or conduct assessments and issue nationally recognised qualifications in accordance with the Australian Quality Training Framework, within a defined scope of registration which identifies the services and products that can be provided. Frequently Asked Questions – Assessment

Overview This section outlines some frequently asked questions about assessments.

Are the assessments optional?

Yes they are, however, TP3 is only able to confirm competence against a unit of competence and only then can we validate that learning is able to be demonstrated in competency attainment when an assessment or validation has been successfully completed.

Are any assessments done in class?

There are two types of assessments, Formative and Summative. The Formative assessment tasks are completed as coursework in the training sessions and the Summative assessments are workplace based projects/activities etc., which are undertaken post the training sessions. There are no exams as such as TP3’s assessment methodology is based on measuring the evidence of workplace knowledge and skill performance in a contextualised setting. We recommend that the summative assessments are completed within 12 weeks from the date of the training so that the concepts are still fresh and relevant.

How much time outside of the course will assessments take?

As assessments are focused on the demonstration of skill and knowledge of concepts in the workplace, the impact is minimised. As a general rule of thumb, participants can expect to undertake between 8 and 10 hours at the high end for each cluster of units.

Can assessment due dates be extended?

Assessment due dates can be extended with negotiation with TP3 course administrators and assessors for special circumstances.

What happens if an assessment is deemed Not Yet Competent (NYC)?

In most cases if an assessment is deemed not yet competent it is due to insufficient evidence being submitted. In these cases the assessor will contact the candidate informing them of the gaps and requesting further evidence to be submitted. In other cases, the assessor will contact the candidate explaining why the assessment result was given and provide them with an opportunity to resubmit further evidence of competence. Should a candidate not provide sufficient or appropriate evidence on a second occasion and require further reassessment, then a fee for this further reassessment may be applied.

Frequently Asked Questions - RPL

Does TP3 recognise prior training or qualifications?

Yes. TP3 can recognise prior training or qualifications via our RPL process.

What is the RPL process?

Candidates approach TP3 requesting RPL, usually at enrolment. They then undertake a self-assessment and evidence mapping and gathering exercise. This is submitted for review. This is reviewed and compared against the required competence/ies, and where required further evidence may be requested.

How can I get RPL towards a qualification?

RPL is attained in primarily two fashions, either RCC or RPL. RCC is providing evidence of previous successful attainment of a current competence through another provider. RPL is submission of evidence against the requirements of the unit of competency or clusters of a qualification. Evidence must be sufficient, authentic, reliable, and current, and will be validated by TP3 assessors.

Frequently Asked Questions - Articulation

Do TP3’s qualifications articulate into other higher level qualifications?

Generally, qualifications can articulate or provide credit towards similar or higher level qualifications in the same field of study. TP3 does have articulation arrangements with some universities and is actively in discussions with others to broaden our pathway arrangements.

Are TP3’s qualifications equal to credit/course at a university?

Depending on the course of study chosen and the qualification held, qualifications can often provide some credit towards a higher level qualification. When seeking credit for current qualifications, tertiary institutions undertake a case by case assessment (mapping or RPL) exercise to determine the match and level of credit applicable.
