STUDENT EXPERIENCE The project begins with introducing the design challenge of creating a Mars Colony using only materials from two transport spaceships and local planetary resources. In the Explore phase, students begin by defining their challenge goals and roles. They then research space travel, biospheres, agriculture, mechanics, building, forms of energy and forms of government. The next phase of the project is the Create phase. Supported by their research and creative techniques such as brainstorming and modeling, students will create a scale model of their Mars Colony. In order to optimize their designs, students will calculate volumes and to lists generated in the Explore Review. In the last phase of the project – the Share phase – students focus on specific industry roles such as a Scientist (e.g. design a hydroponic experiment) or an Anthropologist (e.g. systems of Government/feudalism) in order to simulate what real world professionals would do to ready their design solution for the marketplace.

PROJECT DETAILS Guiding Principle: Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

Product: Mars Colony Design

Subject(s): Common Core ELA, NGSS Practices,

Engineering, and Social Studies.

Grade: 5-8

MASLOW’S MARS

STUDENT CHALLENGE: Develop a Mars Colony that

uses materials from the Plymouth-Mayflower spaceships and local resources that satisfies

the first two levels of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and one

additional level.

WORKSHEET: MARS UV MINI-CHALLENGE Preliminary testing of astronaut model

Goal: create model astronaut and test the effects of sunlight on the astronaut UV beads.

1. Using pipe cleaners and three UV beads design your model astronaut. Make sure the beads are secure on the model so they don’t fall off when you do testing.

2. Let’s run the first test. Put your model astronaut in the sun for about 10 – 15 seconds. It’s best to run this experiment when there is a lot of sun outside.

3. Take your model out of the sun and notice how the beads turn white again (usually takes about 20-30 seconds to go back to original color).

4. Do you have any guesses about how the beads change color? Can you think of other situations where materials change color in the son? Can you think of materials that change color quickly or over a long time?

Page 6: Student Handouts

Protect your Mars astronaut model

Goal: using multiple protection strategies, experiment with your Mars astronaut model to see which strategy protects the astronaut the best.

1. In class you have some materials that you can use to protect your astronaut

model. What materials do you think will work best and why?

2. Using your predictions and other information (class discussion, student

brainstorming), design three protective strategies: (i) protective gear, (ii)

protective shelter, (iii) protective chemicals.

3. You will use three sets of protective strategies to see which one works best.

Can you predict which one will work best?

4. Using the chart below, test each protective strategy for 10 seconds in the sun. Also, try at least 3 different configurations for each strategy and record your results in the table below. Good luck!

Optional questions:

5. Can you think other strategies to protect the astronaut model from the sun? Go ahead and give them a try and mark your results in the “Extra Strategy” category”.

Questions

1. Did you find more than one way to keep your beads from turning color?

2. Did anything surprise you about your results?

3. How are the beads like your skin? How are they different?

4. Protecting astronauts from harmful radiation is one concern. Can you think of other concerns astronauts might face when exploring the surface of Mas?

WORKSHEET: MASLOW’S HIERARCHY

1. Physiological or Basic needs: fill in everything human needs to stay alive. 2. Safety: fill in what you need to feel safe and secure. 3. Love/Belonging: fill in what you need to feel like you are loved and

belong. 4. Self Esteem: Having a strong positive self-image. Confidence,

respect for yourself and others, knowledge, and belief in yourself. 5. Self-Actualization: creative, content, feeling like you have meaning

in your life…Self Sufficient.

HANDOUT: 3D MODELS You will be using PTC Creo View to explore a 3D model of a yacht. First you will explore the model and learn how to move and explode the model into its different parts. Then you will label the different parts of the yacht based upon Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. This will help prepare you for designing and creating your Mars Colony for Space Corp. Z.

Start PTC Creo View by double clicking on the icon or by going to the Start Menu, finding PTC Creo View, and selecting it.

If you are prompted, select Creo View Lite and then click Start. Note: This step is only for those that have a Creo View Startup window appear

Click on the Open icon in the top left corner of the screen to open the file you just saved.

Page 11: Student Handouts

Navigate to the folder containing the 3D Yacht file and open the file: “3D_Yacht(1).pvz”

You will notice that nothing will show up in the graphics area initially, but you will see a model tree with check boxes in front of every part. This allows you to turn on (make visible) or off (hide) every individual part in the assembly.

Page 12: Student Handouts

Check the top level box to make visible the entire assembly.

Take a few minutes and practice rotating the model using the following:

Rotate

Zoom

Pan

Page 13: Student Handouts

PTC Creo View does not allow you to modify the parts or pieces of assemblies so you can’t “BREAK” the model. This makes it a great tool for exploring 3D models. There are three operations that we will explore for manipulating the parts in the model:

• Moving parts to make exploded views

• Section views

• Adding notes

Select Translate Mode in the upper menu.

Left-click on a part like the top of the cruise ship. It will highlight green and direction arrows will appear.

Left-click on the direction arrows and drag the top to move it.

This allows you to move parts of the model so that you can see better how they relate to each other.

Page 14: Student Handouts

Click on other parts and move them around to “explode” the model.

Now click on the Restore Location icon in the upper menu to restore all the parts to their original locations.

Now let’s create a cross-sectional view. Click on the Sectioning tab in the upper menu.

Page 15: Student Handouts

Click on the View Section icon on the upper left and immediately you will see a section cut.

You can change the plane of the cut by clicking on the Initial Section pull down menu and selecting X-axis, Y-axis, or Z-axis.

If you left-click to select the cutting plane, the direction arrows will appear and you can then left-click on the arrows to drag the cutting plane through the part.

Page 16: Student Handouts

You can change the section cut from a half section to a quarter section using the Quarter Cut tool in the upper menu.

You can also send the model rotating slowly around the center by holding down the middle scroll wheel and moving your mouse and letting it go while rotating.

Page 17: Student Handouts

Now let’s learn how to add some notes. Click on the Markup tab in the top level menu.

Click on Note with Leader to create a note with an arrow.

Now left-click on a part and a dialog box will appear where you can type in your note.

Then click OK to finish.

Notice that as you rotate the model the note remains attached to the part but facing towards the front of the screen.

Page 18: Student Handouts

Now it’s time to label the cruise ship sections based upon Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

Choose a View that works for you.

Page 19: Student Handouts

ACTITY WORKSH

Click on Note with Leader to Label the area that meets Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs with an arrow.

Now left-click on a part and a dialog box will appear where you can type in your note.

Then click OK to finish.

Continue labeling the parts of the ship that represents Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.

When you are done SAVE your work!
