There are a plethora of universities to choose from, each specialising in a certain field of research. For me, the course was the most important factor in my choice of university, therefore I researched into the different modules, departmental research and tutors in order to match my particular interests to a course. My degree has a fantastic range of modules and even the opportunity for an international study year abroad and it was this flexibility that attracted me to my course. Despite reading a prospectus, I would always recommend visiting the university to get an idea of what it would be like to live and study there. Luckily for me both the university’s atmosphere, location and course suited me well and as I walked away from the Open Day I knew that this university would be my firm choice. “ ”Academic Study: During your course you have the time and resources to create a deeper understanding of your subject. I’ve certainly become more interested and opinionated within particular areas of my subject and learning more is a very exciting prospect.

“ ” Choosing: For me, choosing a university was difficult, balancing many different factors such as the course, distance from home, entry requirements and opportunities, which all had an impact on my final decision. However, visiting different universities gave me a clearer indication of my preferences and made choosing a university easier.

Fitting In: Moving away from home seemed intimidating at first, but I soon discovered that there was no need to worry. Many first year students I met were in the same situation as me and most universities have residential advisors (existing students) to help you with the transition.

Opportunities: University has provided me with not only the academic opportunities, but also equipped me with additional skills through the abundance of opportunities at my disposal. My recent work experience placement gave me good industry contacts which will hopefully bode well for the start of a successful career.

“ ” Research: Being at the forefront of research is a vital aspect of university. As a student I aim to help contribute to research and I am normally taught by academics who lead ground-breaking research. Helping with research is very exhilarating as you never know what you might discover.
