A school building is not just about design....
(...actually there’s lots to do before, during and after!)
What would happen if young people took charge of an entire school building project?
Student led design
Student led procurement
Student led collaboration
Submission of plans to Hyndburn Council Planning
Department
“The focus of the scheme on building an ecological sustainable building ...is reflected in existing National and Regional Planning Policy and in emerging Local Policy.
The outcome of the department's involvement in the scheme has been extremely positive.
We would actively look to encourage the involvement of school children and the wider community in the development process, raising awareness of the planning process, its impact on society, shaping local communities and built environment. “
Hazel Fox, Planning OfficerHyndburn Borough Council
Meet us in the middle
“We need to think how much our classroom will cost to build and how much it will cost to run, and how we can support our local economy. Local projects should help local people and that makes business sense. We aim to source all building and landscape supplies from within a 50 mile radius of our school thereby helping to support and sustain those local businesses.
We want it to be really green with no carbons. We don’t want it to cost the Earth, so we’re careful about what we use, how we use it and where - and who - it comes from.”

“We have taken time to design our classroom the right way, all of us working together, sustainably …
… we can not allow the construction to take place in the usual ugly way with waste and problems”

Development of ideaswith professional people
“I really enjoyed yesterday’s challenge. It’s amazing to see how much the students have already learnt about sustainable construction (and branding!) from the Eco Classroom project and I’m really looking forward to being part of the journey that will see their ideas being built. “With all the doom and gloom in construction, it’s fantastic to be involved in something so positive and which might make a real impact on the future of the industry”
