The Student Leadership Academy is a co-curricular

leadership development program that is FREE and open

to all current UTPA students. The Leadership Academy

offers a mixture of personal, organizational, and

community leadership development opportunities.

Becoming a member of the Leadership Academy is easy! 1. Log into BroncLink. (utpa.collegiatelink.net/organization/leadership)

2. Click on the “Forms” tab of the Leadership Academy page. (must be

logged in to view the Forms tab)

3. Complete the Registration form and click submit!

(Enrollment ends Sept. 21st and will not re-open until the end of the

semester)

Once enrolled, you have up to two years to attain 150

leadership points. You earn the points by attending

workshops, conferences and completing community service

hours. (more info on this will be given to you once you are

enrolled!) When you reach 150 points you will receive a

Certificate of Leadership and be recognized at the Office for

Student Involvement’s Tribute To Success Awards Program.

Leadership Theories: Social Change Model The Social Change Model (Eisenhower/UCLA ensemble, Higher Education Research

Institute, 1996) asserts that collaboration among individuals, groups, and communities is

essential for social change to occur. The “Seven C’s” of Social Change are principles that are

woven throughout the Student Leadership Academy. Come learn about the Seven C’s and how

The Civically Engaged Leader: Volunteer Deputy Registrar Training Only 2 out of 10 people in the Rio Grande Valley vote. Help change this statistic by serving as

a Volunteer Deputy Registrar*. As a Deputy Registrar you will be able to register eligible

people to vote and make a difference in our community! You have the opportunity to gain

additional service hours by registering people during National Voter Registration Day on Sept.

25th. This is a FREE Training and lunch is provided! *Certain qualifications are required

Service Opportunity: Texas Adopt-A-Beach Clean-Up The Texas Adopt-A-Beach clean-up has been an ongoing event since 1986. Preserving our

beaches is both an economic and environmental priority. Come join fellow UTPA students in

this bi-annual clean up of South Padre Island. Transportation and lunch provided. Limited

Distinguished Speaker Series: Michio Kaku Dr. Michio Kaku is a theoretical physicist, best-selling author, and popularizer of science. As

the co-founder of string field theory (a branch of string theory), he continues Einstein's search

to unite the four fundamental forces of nature into one unified theory that will summarize all

the physical laws of the universe. The Distinguished Speakers Series brings national and global

leaders from various disciplines and diverse backgrounds. All leadership academy members are

The Civically Engaged Leader: National Voter Registration Day On September 25, 2012, volunteers, civic groups, and organizations from all over the country

will "hit the streets" for National Voter Registration Day. This single day of coordinated field,

their own, and while being part of a high-performing team can be fun, it can take patience and

Don’t Change the Subject: Suicide Prevention Documentary & Speaker Don’t Change the Subject is a darkly comic look at what happens when one man dares to ask

questions about the dirtiest word in any language – suicide. Director Mike Stutz investigates

his mom’s suicide by opening up a conversation with his family that they never had when he

Broncs-giving: Social Justice Workshop This workshop will explore social issues that affect communities globally and locally.

Experience social justice through this interactive simulation that shines a light on social issues

that affect all of us. Admission to this event is FREE. Canned goods and non-perishable food

items will be collected at this event and will benefit the RGV Food Bank. Bring your cans and

The Big Fall Leadership Workshop: featuring Del Suggs Every Fall semester the Student Leadership Academy features a nationally recognized speaker

who conducts a day long leadership training. This Fall’s speaker is Del Suggs. Del's

Leadership Development programs are based on his lifetime experience as a volunteer leader.

This training is not just theory, but practical presentations on growing into the best leader

possible. This training will deal with two primary areas: Personal Leadership, which is how to

be a more effective leader; and Organizational Leadership, which covers the challenges of

governing an organization. Breakfast and Lunch Provided!

Leadership Theories: Relational Leadership (Komives, Lucas & McMahon, 1998) defines leadership as “a relational process of people

together attempting to accomplish change or make a difference to benefit the common

good” (p. 21). This Relational Leadership model includes elements of inclusiveness,

empowerment, ethics, purposefulness, and process orientation. Come learn the key concepts of

this model and how you can incorporate these into your personal philosophy of leadership. (Workshop - Organizational)
