LSC-University Park Events This spring, the Office of Student Life will host an event every month at the LSC-University Park campus. In February, you won’t want to miss the first ever “Wax Hands” event at this location, and in March, the office brings you the “Float into Spring” event. With tons of ice cream and root beer to go around, it’s all the foamy goodness any LSC campus could hope for.

Black History Month Events Kicking off Black History Month, the Black Leaders of Today (an LSC-University Park student organization) are hosting a relationship seminar by Anna McCoy. Look for the speaker on the University Park campus on Wednesday, February 9 at 12 p.m.

On February 24th, the Black Leaders of Today continue to enlighten us as they present a play about the life and times of “Madam T.J. Walker.” Catch the live-action theatrical history on February 21st at noon on the LSC-Tomball campus in room N103.

Movie NightsMovie nights are back this semester, and we’re kicking them off with the wizardly adventures of Harry Potter in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One on February 24th at 8 p.m. Not to be outdone, March gets digital with Tron: Legacy on the 24th, again at 8 p.m. (bring your own glowsticks!). Both movies are free and will feature free popcorn, candy, and drinks for the audience. Bring your friends and family to the E-100 theater for free feature films!

February 2011

Harry PotterCampus movies are off to a magical start in February with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One! In the first part of the finale, Potter lovers are surrounded by death and darkness, a very new feeling, indeed. In this installment, Harry is given the task of finding and destroying Voldemort’s Horcruxes, but Voldemort has overtaken The

Ministry of Magic, and Harry is branded a criminal. To set things right, Harry, Hermione, and Ron set off in to find and destroy all of the Horcruxes, and while on the run, the trio soon discovers that the journey may be their last. Don’t miss the enchantment of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One on February 24th at 8:00 p.m. in the E-100 Theater.

Tron: LegacyIn March, the Student Activities Board’s featured movie is Tron. Not just a sensory wonderland, the film has a gripping storyline, too! Sam Flynn’s father, Kevin Flynn, disappeared when Sam was just a child, but years later Sam stumbled upon his father’s secret, digital world called “The Grid. During his exploration, Sam discovers that his father has been stuck inside

“The Grid” for the past 20 years. What’s more, the world that Kevin Flynn created in 1982 is now run by his tyrannical doppelganger, Clu. With the help of the fearless warrior Quorra, Sam and Kevin battle the overlord in a visually stunning, reality bending computer universe. Get on “The Grid;” catch Tron on March 24th at 8:00 p.m. in the E-100 Theater.

The Office of Student Life Staff Spotlight: Andrew Dang,

Media and Web Specialist

Hello, I’m Andrew! If one were to guess my goals based on my two biggest pass times, they might think I were trying to be a famous video editor or the next “Iron Chef” America. For now, I’m exploring my options with a major in Graphic Design and minor in Culinary Arts.

This spring, I’m enjoying my first semester as the Media and

Website Specialist in the Office of Student Life. It’s been a lot of fun! I’m doing what I like to do, and I work closely with the Student Activities Board (which is helpful, because I’m one of the three historians for the organization!). I also like my job because, even though we all have work to do and sometimes there are misunderstandings, I feel comfortable expressing my ideas with my coworkers, have fun with them, and I feel like we’re doing something special together.

The annual Trevor’s Choice Awards (formerly known as Club Awards) is an event hosted by the Office of Student Life, Student Activities Board, and the Student Government Association. Traditionally held in April, Trevor’s Choice Awards is an evening to celebrate the accomplishments of our student organizations and a few individual members who went the extra mile throughout the academic year.

At LSC-Tomball, the students who participate in student organizations volunteer countless hours as they work to improve communication skills, time and priority management skills, and leadership skills. As a bonus, they also make friends that last a lifetime!

Trevor’s Choice Awards is an opportunity to recognize the student organizations, the advisors, and members who set the bar high and regularly reach it with impressive results. Nominations are accepted each year for the following categories:

Every spring a theme is chosen by the Student Activities Board and the Student Government Association. Past themes include Pirates, Toga Party, and last year’s theme was Masquerade Ball. Elaborate decorations and costumes add to the fun, celebratory atmosphere of the evening! Everyone gets into the spirit of the theme and makes the night a party to remember!

As an active member of student organization, you are invited to the Trevor’s Choice Awards, and you won’t want to miss what the organizers have planned for this year’s event.

Join us in celebrating Spring Fling, an annual tradition at LSC-Tomball that brings

together students, faculty, and staff for a day of fun and entertainment!

Math ClubMaking the most of math and loving it, the LSC-Tomball Math Club wants to share its affection for the subject with the Tomball campus. “The mission of the Math Club is to provide a venue for students who like math to participate in both fun and service-oriented activities, both at school and in the community,” says Math Club advisor, Mark Hammerbacher. “The club is not just for the smartest math students. We’ve had students in classes from every level of developmental math through differential equations.”

Math Club participates in campus wide events annually, but they also plan great events for club members and the community. In the fall, Math Club adopted two families: one for Thanksgiving and one for Christmas. They provided the adopted families with food, as well as household supplies and presents.

Math club has a wide range of events planned for the spring semester, as well. Hammerbacher explains, “Math Club intends to sponsor Round 2 of the Student Mathematics League Competition, offer Couples’ Graffiti (where couples or individuals can profess their love on designated walls), hand out free pie for everyone on ‘Pi Day’ (March 14th, 3.14, get the idea?), and we hope to bring ‘Mathemagician’ Dr. Arthur Benjamin to campus, who, astonishingly, can square an audience-generated 5-digit number in his head!”

Whether you believe mathematics to be a universal language that is the divine gift to humankind , or believe it to be a demon that should be cast into the fiery depths of the netherworld, consider giving Math Club a chance. If you like math, fantastic! And if you don’t like math, maybe you should give it a chance to win you over . . . maybe.
