3 New Zealanders are famous for their warm hospitality to overseas visitors. We are friendly, welcoming, love travel and enjoy meeting people from other cultures. We are also known for our positive, ‘can do’ attitude - a pioneering spirit, which is behind some of our biggest achievements, from climbing Mount Everest to winning the America’s Cup yachting series.

Living in New Zealand A country with attitude!New Zealanders enjoy a fantastic lifestyle - but we are also outward looking, travelling, and exporting our quality products and services all over the globe.

A long-established democracy, New Zealand has a safe political environment. We are a multi-cultural society, refl ecting many years of migration from all parts of the globe. The largest non-European group is the indigenous Maori, the tangata whenua - the people of the land. We are also home to many people from the Pacifi c Islands and Asia.

Summers are mostly warm and dry.

Winters are quite mild.

Our CampusesOur campuses are in Palmerston North, Wanganui and Wairarapa. Wherever you are, UCOL has a strong relationship with the local community, and living costs are very reasonable. The programmes in which most of our international students are enrolled are located on the Palmerston North and Wanganui campuses. Why study at an institute of technology? The Institutes of Technology and/or Polytechnics in New Zealand, also known as ITPs, are public tertiary institutions.

ITPs deliver applied learning in technical, vocational and professional fi elds. Their programmes are well-regarded by New Zealand employers and many programmes have achieved international recognition. Many are approved by ITP Quality on behalf of the New Zealand Qualifi cations Authority (NZQA). ITPs provide a world-class educational experience for students from all over the world; school-leavers and adults;

people who want to begin a career, grow their career or change their career. They offer a wide range of qualifi cation levels: degrees, diplomas and certifi cates. Education at a New Zealand polytechnic or institute of technology is student-friendly. Most of the classes are small, much of the learning is practical, and they all operate student support services.

Sam CheungCERTIFICATE IN ELECTRICAL & RELATED TRADES

“You get out what you put in but I know I could not have got where I am without the skills UCOL passed on to me.”

Having just received his electrical service technician registration, New Zealand practising licence and his 2 year work permit Sam is beyond proud. He asks himself ‘How great is this?’

“The certifi cate was extremely well structured and UCOL is all about work experience. I began my placement not long after the course started and was surprised because colleagues didn’t have to ask me if I knew how to do something, I was already doing it! What you learn in the class is what you need on the job.”

As Sam refl ects on his time one point comes to mind. UCOL is not just about theory, UCOL is about practical experience. Sam’s goal for the next 2 years is to become a New Zealand Registered Electrician and eventually an Electrical Engineer.

“UCOL does not waste your time and money. Special thanks to Fiona Mason (International Student Adviser) and Gavin Jack (Programme Leader) who were vital to my success and gave me a solid career foundation.”

Jyotishna Devi Ram Fiji - Certifi cate in Art & Design

I really like the teaching style at UCOL.I chose to study in New Zealand in order to obtain an internationally recognised degree. My fi rst choice was UCOL and it has proved to be the best choice I have made. UCOL offers a safe & secure environment and meeting people from different cultures has been great.

Patchavat (Tee) Jeerapatananuwong Thailand

I really enjoy studying in Wanganui as it is so peaceful and people are so friendly. I have been studying here for almost 3 years. I think I have grown a lot since I came to study in Wanganui. Now I am studying Computer Graphic Design which is my favourite subject.

Driving inNew ZealandIf you hold a valid overseas driver’s licence or an international driving permit, you can drive in New Zealand for a maximum of 3 months after you fi rst arrive. You should then apply for a New Zealand Driver’s licence. You will need two kinds of identifi cation (ID) to prove who you are and what your current address is. You must be able to prove you hold a valid overseas licence. You will only be able to drive those types of vehicles for which you were licened in your country of origin. You must also carry that licence or permit with you at all times when driving. If you do not apply for a New Zealand driver’s licence within three months of arriving in New Zealand, you will become an unlicensed driver and could be charged if you are caught driving by the police. You need a licence to obtain vehicle insurance.

CodeUCOL has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students published by the Minister of Education. Copies of the Code are available on request from this institution or from the New Zealand Ministry of Education website at: www.minedu.govt.nz/goto/international.

ImmigrationFull details of visa and permit requirements, advice on rights to employment in New Zealand while studying, and reporting requirements are available through the New Zealand Immigration Service, and can be viewed on their website at: www.immigration.govt.nz.

Eligibility for health servicesMost international students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of that treatment. Full details on entitlements to publicly-funded health services are available through the Ministry of Health, and can be viewed on their website at: www.moh.govt.nz.

Accident insuranceThe Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents and temporary visitors to New Zealand, but you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs. Further information can be viewed on the ACC website at: www.acc.co.nz.

Medical and travel insuranceInternational students must have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand. This is because most students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand unless they are:

• a resident or citizen of Australia, or

• a national of the United Kingdom in New Zealand, or

• the holder of a temporary permit that is valid for two years or more.

If you do not belong to one of these special categories and you receive medical treatment during your visit, you must pay for the full costs of that treatment. For treatment of a cold, fl u or other common health problems, you will usually visit the local doctor (sometimes called a general practitioner or GP) or the doctor’s clinic on campus. There is a $15 charge for a clinic visit on

our campus. If you need assistance after hours, you can visit a local emergency clinic or hospital. (Average cost of medical insurance $NZ15 per week).

Medical insurance must cover the cost of staying in hospital, visits to the doctor, urgent medical treatment and medicine, and sometimes emergency dental treatment. It is compulsory for all international students to be able to show evidence of having travel and medical insurance at enrolment for the period of their study. Food• A complete range of fresh meats is available in New Zealand.

• Poultry is reasonably priced, while pork is more expensive.

• Fresh fruit & vegetables are plentiful, and are moderately priced.

• Ethnic foodstuffs are available.

• There is a variety of ethnic restaurants and takeaways in Wanganui & Palmerston North.

• There are also other food outlets available in New Zealand, catering to a variety of cuisine.

Cost of LivingPlease note: This is a general guide only and

prices may vary depending on the goods and

services sought.

AccommodationUCOL can offer students two types of

accommodation. Homestay accommodation

is available in both Palmerston North and

Wanganui. Student fl ats are available in

Wanganui only.

Homestay

Homestay accommodation is where a student

lives with a selected New Zealand family. The

average cost of homestay accommodation in

Palmerston North or Wanganui is $175 a week.

This is much cheaper than in bigger cities.

UCOL can arrange this type of accommodation

for you before you leave your own country. Many

students choose homestay accommodation for

the fi rst three or four months of their stay in

New Zealand and then go on to share a fl at with

friends. You will be provided with your own room

and at least two meals a day. Homestay allows

you to concentrate on your studies and is also a

great way for you to learn as much as possible

about New Zealanders and the way we live. It

provides you with an opportunity to practise your

English and get used to life in New Zealand while

you have the support of a friendly and caring

New Zealand family.

We have assessed the accommodation to

which we refer students and found it to be

of a satisfactory standard. Our International

coordinators on the Palmerston North and

Wanganui campuses are available to assist with

issues relating to this accommodation.

Wanganui Student Flats

Wanganui UCOL has a limited number of student

fl ats available. Cost of accommodation in the

fl ats begins from $100 (New Zealand dollars) a

week. This covers all the bills except telephone

bills, bedding, some basic utensils and food. The

student fl ats are situated adjacent to the main

campus (3min walk).

Private RentalFlatting

In New Zealand the word fl atting means that you wish to rent a house and share it with friends. A fl at may have one bedroom, or may be a house with as many as 5 or 6 bedrooms. You will be responsible for providing your own furniture, your share of power/water/phone bills, cooking your own meals, doing your own laundry and all other obligations under the rental agreement. Many students enjoy the challenge and independence of sharing a fl at with other students. Approximate cost in $NZ to share a fl at with two other students.

Bond $440 (your share $160)2 weeks rent $440 (your share $160)Power $120 per mnth (your share ($40)Phone $40 rental per mnth. Toll calls will be extra (your share $14)Gas $80 per mnth (your share $18)Food $750 per mnth (your share $250)Rent $960 per mnth (your share $320)

You will also need to make sure that you have allowed enough money for buying furniture, bedding, cooking utensils and other household items. It can take some time to fi nd a fl at and you may need to stay in temporary accommodation for the fi rst 2-4 weeks.

Private Hostels

In a hostel you will have your own room and may have your own bathroom and telephone (this varies from place to place). You will be provided with a bed and bedding and will share laundry and cooking facilities. There is also usually a shared common room. Some hostels will provide meals. Prices vary according to the facilities provided. Hostel accommodation is very popular and you may have to stay in temporary accommodation until a place becomes available.

Temporary Accommodation

Finding a suitable place to rent can take 2-4 weeks. We can arrange short term homestay accommodation for you for this time. It can be less expensive to do this than to stay in a motel or backpackers, as you will have at least two meals a day provided for you at no extra cost. You can fi nd more information about temporary accommodation on the following websites:

Tony Luo China

Tony comes from Chengdu of Sichuan province, a laid-back city located in the south-west of P.R China. He is a fi rst year student of UCOL’s Bachelor of Human Performance. UCOL’s intimate teaching style is very enjoyable, and UCOL’s teachers & staff are really helpful. “Palmy is awesome, I enjoy both study and social life!”

Kaushal Adeshara India - NZ Diploma in Business

After Studying 1.5 years at UCOL my outlook towards life has totally changed. I am getting world class education here and a global exposure as I have met people from different regions, different countries and different backgrounds. Tutors here are always supportive and always there whenever required.

If you need to do practical assignments as part of your study programme, you will fi nd UCOL has facilities similar to the best in the industry.

TransportA free bus service exists for UCOL students for

local rides within Palmerston North & Wanganui.

Students must show current UCOL Student

Identifi cation to be granted a free ride. If

students decide to ride a bicycle please remember

a cycle helmet. It is compulsory to wear a cycle

helmet.

There is an excellent national public transport

system in place which includes bus, ferry and

train. If you are planning a tour throughout New

Zealand, you can obtain special student travel

passes. Discount fares are available for plane

travel if you book early.

Clothing• Good woollen jerseys and waterproof jackets

are relatively inexpensive in New Zealand.

• Cotton clothing is more expensive than in

Asia.

• Shoes are expensive compared with footwear

in Asian countries.

• Good leather shoes with rubber soles and

sports shoes are necessary for New Zealand.

• Bring an umbrella and a raincoat.

Money• Bring only a little cash.

• Bring travellers cheques to cover your initial

expenses.

• Take out a bank draft for larger sums of

money.

It is illegal to possess recreational drugs (Class A,

B or C) or prescribed drugs without a prescription

in New Zealand. Do not bring any drugs with you

unless they are prescribed. You may not work for

money in New Zealand without a Special Student

work permit. People who breach this regulation

can be sent home immediately.

Legal RightsPolice in New Zealand do not routinely carry

guns. They are friendly and helpful. Anyone who

is arrested will be permitted to speak to a lawyer.

If you want to know more about your rights ask

at Orientation.

Helpful Tips

• Bring your International Student Card (ISIC) with you, it is cheaper than obtaining

one in New Zealand - you can buy discounted plane fares with an ISIC card.

• If you have a Driver’s Licence, bring it with you - this makes it easier to obtain a

New Zealand Licence.

• Bring half a dozen passport size photos with you - they are expensive in New

Zealand.

• Don’t bring electrical goods (hair dryer, CD player etc.); even with the proper

adapter, they may blow out. There are various electrical appliance stores in

Wanganui and Palmerston North where you can buy small electrical goods at

reasonable rates.

• Bring your own sports gear, e.g. squash racquet, badminton racquet, etc. These

will probably cost more in New Zealand. The exception is good quality hockey

sticks, which are cheap in New Zealand.

• Write in advance for a book list. Books may be cheaper in your own country.

• Make sure you have information about your own country. People will ask you a lot

of questions.

• Cigarettes are expensive in New Zealand. Give up before you arrive!

• Remember, 20kg is all the luggage you can bring to New Zealand without paying

an excess baggage fee.

• Bring your national costume if you consider this appropriate.

Things you should know before you leave home:

• Basic cooking (how to cook rice - prepare dinner etc.)

• Basic fi rst aid (how to clean wounds, deal with vomiting etc.)

• How to take care of your own clothes and bedding.

educational programme. We also believe it

except as expressly provided for in this policy.

1.3 This refund policy replaces all earlier policies in respect of

course(s) has started, or whether or not a UCOL qualifi cation has

been partially completed) for any reason cancel any course(s) or

qualifi cation(s) offered. If a course(s) is cancelled or a qualifi cation

not offered, fees paid (not including fees for preceding enrolment

periods) will be refunded to you, or to the person or organisation

of compensation will be paid by UCOL to you, or to the person or

organisation who originally paid your fees.

16.2 UCOL may also postpone the start date of a course(s) or start date

of study for a qualifi cation offered. If the new start date does

not suit you we will refund the fees to you, or to the person or

organisation who paid them. No compensation is payable by UCOL

to you or anyone else. If you have partially completed course(s)/

qualifi cation(s), UCOL may still cancel the course(s)/qualifi cation(s)

and no compensation is payable.

16.3 No compensation will be payable to you by UCOL for the

cancellation by UCOL of a course(s)/qualifi cation(s), for any reason,

regardless of whether you have completed a number of days, weeks

or months of a course(s)/qualifi cation(s), or whether you have

completed one or more years towards qualifi cation.

16.4 In enrolling at UCOL you acknowledge that UCOL may decide to

cancel or postpone course(s)/qualifi cation(s) from time to time for

a variety of reasons including (but not limited to) lack of interest,

UCOL may deliver the course by distance if circumstances arise that
