1. How did you spend your time this week? What responsibilities did you have?a. This week I began phasing out. I facilitated morning meeting and continued to

teach fluency, grammar, writing, and social studies. My mentor resumed control of comprehension, literacy small groups, and the math block. On Friday, my mentor was absent, so I taught bell to bell that day with a sub in the room.

2. What were your most satisfying experiences? What were your most challenging experiences?

a. My most satisfying experience this week was working with students in small groups. I enjoy continuing to get to know my students as individuals and in small groups we can talk and I get the chance to see how they’re progressing. It’s amazing how much they have grown since school started in August. A lot of my students have really gotten into writing and illustrating their own stories when they finish their work early, which started while I was teaching bell to bell. When they finish their stories, I let them share it at the end of the day on the ELMO. The author either reads their work independently or reads it with my assistance and explains their illustrations to the whole group. It’s snowballed a bit and even students who were really shy and lacking confidence in their work have written short stories to share. They consider themselves authors and they’re all really excited about storytelling, which makes me very excited and proud.

b. My most challenging experiences this week was teaching on Friday. It started snowing and the entire class lost their minds the last hour of school. We were able to regroup by taking time to look at the snow and working together to pick up the room before going home, however, this ate up their entire math block, so I will have to reteach on Monday. When I’m in a situation like that again, I need to remember to take a minute, be less concerned that the class is not following the lesson plan, and allow students to follow their curiosity. If I had more time and this insight, I would have modified their math lesson to be about the weather outside after giving students time to go over and look out the window at the snow.

3. What are the plans for the upcoming week?a. This coming week, we only have school on Monday and Tuesday. My mentor

will be out again on Monday, so I will be bell to bell again. I’m not sure how student behavior is going to be, since they were so squirrely on Friday and it’s so close to break, but I’m trying to remain optimistic. Tuesday my mentor returns and resumes teaching. There is school wide bingo on Tuesday from 1:45-2:45, which will be a new experience for me and for the 1st Graders, as they have yet to play bingo (5th grade mentors will be in our classroom to help students) - I’m excited to see how everything unfolds.
