Outcomes & Experiences of Participants Student Of The Year Awards
This is the third year of our enchanting journey to identify and promote talented school students who would simply shine their light ahead, and be beacon lights of hope in a rapidly changing world. Past winners of the Awards have gone on to secure scholarships at the Ivy League, to win international level competitions, and generally, to be the best versions of themselves.
The Student Of The Year Awards is not just for winners. Winning the Award is not everything - participation matters. The process followed in identifying winners compels students to introspect about themselves and reflect on their unique qualities. As a result, after completing the process for the Awards, students are more confident about themselves and experience increased connectedness with their dreams and goals. Therefore, everyone who participates in the process for The Awards is a winner.
We recognize that overemphasis on grades, test scores, and rote learning will not prepare students for success in our rapidly changing world. We hold that in order to be successful in the new economy, our children need to inculcate the ability to be independent, adaptable, ethical, and engaged critical thinkers.
The Student Of The Year Awards was instituted to motivate each student to explore themselves and to create their unique story. The students who participate in the Awards process come from a wide diversity of backgrounds, aspirations and achievements. Among the participants are authors, singers, poets, entrepreneurs, tech-innovators, world record holders, opinion leaders, Olympiad participants, school toppers and other superlative performers.
Applying for the Awards was a wonderful experience. It helped me realize my full potential. It also made me a lot more confident. It inspired me to reach for the sky. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole application process.

The Student Of The Year Awards - 2017 ceremony was held at PHD
House, New Delhi on 12th August, 2018. The auditorium was packed with
students, parents and school heads in attendance. More than 200 students and
around 30 dignitaries graced the occasion.
Prof. Saikat Majumdar was the Chief Guest and Keynote Speaker at the Awards. At Stanford University as a specialist
in English as a language of world literature, Prof. Majumdar was witness to an innovative experiment at Stanford that aimed
at integrating the humanities and computer science by offering a new “joint major” in Computer Science and English. He now
teaches English and Creative Writing at Ashoka University.
In a very lucid manner, Prof. Majumdar spoke about the context and the content of his latest book “College: Pathways Of
Possibility”. Prof. Majumdar was quick to point out the anomaly in India’s archaic education system that produces “trained
incapacity” and discourages creativity and critical thinking. He caustically commented, “... here is an education system where the
consumption and the production of
knowledge are more or less unrelated
affairs.” Prof. Majumdar then exhorted
the assembled teachers and students
to try and attempt in getting to the soul
of each discipline and of each subject.
According to him that could only be
possible by thinking through the discipline - by the production of new
knowledge, whether through the writing of papers, research essays or
theses, or designing projects or experiments that shape such production.
That would pave the way for success in a rapidly changing world.
Representatives from USA UnivQuest, process facilitators of the Awards, highlighted key aspects of their programs, designed to
wean students away from the admission rat race in India. USA UnivQuest programs include training for the SAT, SAT Subjects,
Advanced Placements, TOEFL/IELTS, School Exams and “goal-setting” designed to ensure a holistic development of each
student. USA UnivQuest representatives emphasized that most of their students gain admission to the World’s Best Universities.
The Felicitation Ceremony Student Of The Year Awards - 2017
This was followed by the Felicitation of Award Winners, teachers and mentors. Welcomed with
a rousing ovation, 15 students shortlisted from across India received the National Awards from
the Chief Guest and the dignitaries present. Another 72 students from 19 cities across India
were proud recipients of the City Awards. The principals, teachers
and mentors from the schools were also honoured with a token of
appreciation from the Global SOTY Foundation.

true potential. It sort of motivated me to
do more and achieve more.
