Student Feature: Dmytro Chupryna
After coming to OSU from Ukraine to study in the Pathway program, Dmytro has recently been admitted to the OSU Honors College, which offers the most prestigious degrees at OSU. Good job, Dmytro!
The Student Voice asked Dmytro some questions about what he does in his spare time. Here’s what he had to say:
What do you do in your spare time outside of class? I’m an officer in two organizations. I’m an event manager for the International Student Union in the College of Business and I’m the head of the Communication and Marketing club. Besides those
academic activities, I just hang out with my friends. I go to Dixon Recreation Center and the library.
I think the facilities are really high quality here. If you want to have a good study environment, then the library is a good place. Dixon is a good place to get healthy, although sometimes it’s a bit crowded. I live in the International Living-Learning Center. It’s great. It’s brand new! Sometimes it’s too brand new...too fancy, too shiny! It’s so new that when I ordered pizza, the pizza place didn’t even know that people lived here. But overall it’s nice, it’s quiet. It takes me like five minutes to get to class.
Thanks for talking to us, Dmytro. Good luck at OSU!

World Traveler: Mary Hughes
INTO OSU instructor Mary Hughes has some serious travel experience. So far, she has visited 69 countries and hopes to join the “100 Countries Club” soon! When asked about her experience, here’s what Mary had to say:From a young age... I developed an intense curiosity to know about and to experience different ways of living. I needed to see how others viewed life, religion, family, art and music. I wanted to know what kind of food others ate and how they celebrated holidays and festivals. I wanted to see things that I saw in books and to know more about world history. This led to my first overseas school trip
to Greece at age 14. Traveling and living abroad has had a huge impact on my life and has helped to shape the way I view myself and the world. It has deepened my empathy for others and has given me a stronger appreciation of everything I have. It’s made me more aware of the injustices around the world, including in the US, and has deepened my passion to help those less fortunate than myself. My time in Senegal was particularly life changing. From the Senegalese, I learned the importance of greeting everyone from the heart. I learned the real meaning of community; people share what they have today with no worries about tomorrow. I felt people lived with a feeling of “everything is going to be alright.” I feel the same way now.
Artist: Carousel Album: N/A Released: N/A
Carousel is brand new on the scene and has so far only released single songs - but those songs are great! The catchiness is incredible. It’s crisp, summery music that shifts between happy and
sad effortlessly. From the bouncy “Open Road” to the longing of “Where Have You Gone,” their collection of songs (there’s no official album yet), is a journey that you’ll definitely want to take! Check out their Youtube page for lots of great songs.
Artist: Ghost Beach Album: EP Released: Jan. 10, 2012
Ghost Beach calls their music “tropical grit pop,” and it’s a good description. Their music mixes rock, punk, techno and more, and they craft it all into
an ultra-listenable sound that drags you away. It’s high energy, modern and seriously fun. So far, my favorite track is “Miracle.” Click here to listen on Youtube. It’s packed with reverb (what’s reverb?) and pulses with synth (again, what’s that?). This is summer music, perfect for blasting during a bbq in the park. Give it a shot. Buy the EP for less than $5 on iTunes (opens iTunes).

4th of July What’s it all about? The Fourth of July has been celebrated since the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776. This document declared that the United States was an independent country, separate from Britain, who had until then controlled the US.
Today, the Fourth of July is all about remembering our independence, shooting off fireworks, bbq-ing and spending time with family. If there’s an iconic American holiday, this is it!
Red, White & Blue Festival Corvallis takes pride in its Fourth of July celebration, which is called the Red, White and Blue Riverfront Festival. On July 3rd and July 4th, the festival brings people to the Corvallis waterfront to watch live music, eat great food and, once the sun goes down, watch a fireworks show. For more information, visit the festival website by clicking here.
Have your own fun! In addition to festivals in Corvallis, you can buy your own fireworks! There are firework stands in parking lots all over campus, stocked with lots of different fireworks. These types don’t shoot into the sky – those are illegal in Oregon. They sit on the ground and spray colorful sparks into the air, crackle on the ground and more.
