Student VoiceChifley College Bidwill Campus

•School-wide, “everyone, everywhere” matrix, based on core values –

Responsibility, Learning, Respect.

•Matrix on display on large signs around school. Now developing classroom

expectations.

•Students surveyed and SRC reps participated in some PBL team meetings.

Students are main participants in campaign launches, e.g. listening,

being on time for class.

•Key members of PBL team include HT Welfare, who supervises SRC, members of

LST, DPs. Whole staff recognises that if PBL is to have effect we must be more

successful in involving students.

•Core values - Respect, Responsibility, Active Learning.Values-based rules displayed on signs, eg respect the privacy of others.Students receive “Goldies” for demonstrating values.Values-based language is promoted.PBL is permanent agenda item for exec and staff meetings. •Active SRC facilitated by PBL team member.Peer support directly related to PBL. Peer reading schemes. Peer mediation.“Circuitbreakers”: Yr 11 students (boys not in leadership roles due to problems as juniors) working in gym with Yr 9 boys. •Considering working with feeder primary schools to develop coordinated PBL approach.Students surveyed about what perceived as problems and solutions.Student leadership team being trained by Holroyd Council.

•PBL is top school priority ... reflected in management plan and ASR. Pride Guide: Be a Learner, Be Respectful, Be Safe. Expectations taught in class. Values of Pride Guide are promoted in school publications and events. All students eligible to receive Pride Pin through self monitoring of Pride Guide expectations.

• To nominate for student leadership team, students self-assess. Captains are advocates of Pride Guide. K-6 SRC includes representatives of support classes.

•Core values – Respect, Responsibility, Resilience - reinforced with posters around school, in classrooms.

•Matrix of values. Procedural Fairness Guide. Student representatives involved in developing Procedural Fairness Guide.

•All school rewards systems are based on core values.

•Captains distribute awards for the area they are responsible for.

•All senior students lead peer support groups.


Student VoiceLynwood Park Public School

•Value of the Month. Awards given for demonstrating this value. Value discussed regularly. Expectations soon to be taught explicitly in PD/H/PE.

•Parliament: Each member elected by students and staff before voting for winning party. Yr 5 & 6 who are not in a party, become back benchers ...ask questions & make suggestions. Ministers responsible for raising flag, making announcements through PA etc.

•Peer mediators. Training in conflict resolution.

•Peer Support. Yr 6 trained as leaders, Yr 5 as co-leaders.

•Year 5 & 6 teachers coordinate. Students trained in leadership at Longneck Lagoon. Look forward to students joining PBL team.

•Committed staff coordinate leadership initiatives; and are actively involved in professional learning in Colyton Learning Community.

•Common core goals - Particpation, Cooperation, Excellence - for PEC schools: Plumpton HS, Plumpton PS, Glendenning PS, William Dean PS, Plumpton House.

•Share consistent expectations of Participation, Cooperation , Excellence.

•Worked hard to foster leadership opportunities K – 12 through initiatives such as PEC CAPA Expo, Gala Day, Leadership Day, Citizen Continuum program.

•PEC plan priority area: Building the Capacity of Students as Responsible and Productive Citizens. Within this, in next 3 years:


Student Wellbeing Develope policy focusing on consistent approach to student management.

Citizenship Continuum High school mentoring. Community service.Student Leadership Framework being developed K-12.Self Development and Self Management

Develop a description of skill development. Use to begin student learning journals.

Parent Support Program 1-2 programs per semester. Parents involved in panels for citizenship interviews.

•Core values – Respect, Responsibility, Honesty – taught to students for classroom and non-classroom use.

•SRC and prefects work on projects within school, eg community service, leadership camps, compilation and presentation of data for PBL committee.

•Coordinators for prefects, SRC, Peer Support, Peer Mediation, Big Sister.

•Developed core expectations called SMART: Safe-Motivated-Academic-Respectful-Tolerant.

•Student leadership groups: SRC, Peer Counsellors, Peer Leaders, School Captains, House Captains.

•Student leaders used in PBL lessons ... to spread the word, assist in lessons, develop materials that would be valued by students.


Student Voice Windsor High School

•Core values - Safety, Teamwork, Achievement, Respect – form Windsor Star. Students work through 4 levels by earning merits for practising these values.

•SRC runs Harmony Day, Education Week celebrations, Values Day. Peer support leaders assist with Year 7 transition.Captains provide leadership at Youth Forums, Anzac Services, Presentation Night. •Excellent network of care, eg DPs and HTs, leadership coordinator, safe school coordinator, student support coordinator ...

•Ask students why Student Voice is important?

•When I heard other schools’ stories, I often thought “I’d love to do that” ... Ask students What is the best idea that you have heard about today?

•I would be keen to explore the domain of Student Initiated Initiatives ... to simply ask students if they (or their constituents) have made suggestions that had been implemented in their schools ... and if so how they felt about this? ... Did they feel empowered? Why is it important to empower students? What did they learn from this? If your school could become your ideal school, what would have changed? Could you bring about all or some of this change? If so, How?
