A Letter from the President
This past year at Students 2 Science (S2S) has been marked by tremendous growth, incredible milestones, and
exciting achievements. We hosted the official opening ceremony of the S2S Newark Technology Center, the
fruition of a partnership launched only two years ago; our V-Lab program continues to expand rapidly, serving
over 9,500 students during the last school year; our volunteer and employee engagement programs, the driving
force behind our success, are thriving; our organization is rapidly expanding with new staffing and infrastructure
improvements; and we are continuing to promote and encourage the development of STEM Ecosystems by
working with a diverse group of partners and collaborators.
Thank you for helping us reach our potential as a national model in authentic STEM education and urban
community development. We are so grateful for the generosity of the many extraordinary individuals, partners,
and funders who have made our journey possible. But this journey is far from over. We have serious work ahead
of us if we are to realize our full potential and fulfill our obligation to our students. This work is especially
important as we approach the first full year of implementation at the S2S Newark Technology Center, continue
the expansion of our programs with new contents and outreach to new schools and districts, and implement
staffing and infrastructure improvements.
The future of the global workforce is in STEM fields. It is our obligation to educate and inspire the vast pool of
talented youth in our communities to be ready for that future.
The support of our generous partners is now more
important than ever. Our vision is to educate and
develop our future workforce by closing gaps in
access to hands-on, rigorous STEM education and
real-world experiences. With your support, we are
confident that we will achieve these objectives and
provide opportunity and access to many more
extraordinary students.

S2S and Authentic STEM Education Students 2 Science was created as an innovative solution, to bring authentic STEM education to urban community youth and to serve as a much-needed intermediary and bridge between the public and private sectors. Our mission is to inspire, motivate, and educate elementary, middle, and high school students to pursue high demand 21st Century careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Today, S2S is recognized throughout the
state of New Jersey as a leader in STEM
education, bringing education closer to
workforce readiness. In the past eight years,
over 37,000 students and hundreds of
teachers have participated in S2S programs
and services with the support of over 2,000
corporate mentors, individuals and
educators who serve as volunteers.
STEM education in the U.S. is at a critical
juncture, caught between an under-
resourced education system, declining
interest in STEM subjects among students,
and rapidly increasing global demand for a
highly skilled workforce in STEM fields.
- STEM occupations are projected to grow by 8.9% from 2014 to 2024, compared to 6.4% growth for non-
STEM occupations. (U.S. Department of Commerce, 2017)
- In U.S., unemployment rate in STEM jobs is 2.2% compared to 5.5% for non-STEM jobs. (U.S. Census
Department, 2014- 2017)
- In 2016, 13 STEM jobs were posted online for each unemployed worker that year. (New American
Economy, 2017)
- STEM workers earned 29% more than their non-STEM counterparts in 2015. (U.S. Department of
Commerce, 2017)
- However, only 25.6% of certificates and degrees awarded are in STEM Fields in the United States. (U.S.
Department of Education)
Great inequities also continue to persist in STEM education along racial, ethnic, cultural, socio-economic, gender
and geographic lines, creating a chasm of unrecognized economic empowerment and security.
- African Americans and Latinos are underrepresented in the STEM workforce – they comprise only 16%
of the STEM workforce in comparison to 27% of the overall workforce. (Pew Research Center, 2018)

- Only 2.2% of Latinos, 2.7% of African Americans, and 3.3% of Native Americans and Alaska Natives earn
a bachelor’s degree in the natural sciences or engineering by age 24. (The Leadership Conference Fund,
2015)
- Women represent 46% of the overall workforce but hold less than 25% of STEM jobs. They make up the
majority of students on college campuses today but represent less than 20 percent of bachelor’s degree
recipients in fields like computer science and engineering. (The Leadership Conference Fund, 2015)
S2S believes that great STEM education is an issue of civil rights. We can play an important role in equalizing
access to STEM education for all students. While all students benefit from the experience and guidance S2S
provides through its programs, our focus is primarily on those who most need assistance and on those who are
least likely to receive such an experience.
Approximately 80% of the students we serve come from underserved communities in NJ (e.g. Newark, Paterson,
Irvington, North Bergen, and Union City). Our formal partnership with the City of Newark, as detailed below in this
report, is a highlight of the kind of innovative thinking and community-based collaboration that can have a huge
impact on school districts and communities in need.
S2S - A National Model in Transformational STEM Education
S2S is an intermediary and bridge, which meets the needs of the public and private sectors in order to promote
21st Century analytical skills through hands-on STEM education and teacher professional development. The
model identifies solutions in STEM education:
• Collaborative planning between the public and private sectors in learning designs, applying real-world
learning and real-world solutions.
• Providing STEM early in elementary school and building on that knowledge and career pathways through
high school.
• Transforming STEM education programs in under-resourced communities through problem-and project-
based learning in authentic work settings.
• Providing high quality educators with content expertise on an on-going basis.
• Bring education closer to workforce readiness in high demand STEM careers.
• Providing interaction with corporate role models and volunteers in the ISAAC and V-Lab programs.
• Educating students for the many 21st Century high demand STEM careers within the state of New Jersey
and through the globe.
• Providing district-wide technical assistance and professional development for teachers in science where
content expertise and innovation is needed (e.g. in Newark with the potential to reach over 32,000
students and their parents in elementary through high school).
• Eliminating language constraints and providing instruction in over 200 hundred spoken languages with
interpreters on demand.
• Creating systemic STEM education transformation through collaboration and partnership.

S2S Newark Technology Center We are excited to announce the opening of the S2S
Newark Technology Center – a 10,000 square ft. state-of-
the-art facility valued at $4 million - in downtown Newark
that is designed to engage Newark students in hands-on
science learning. The center had its official opening
ceremony on May 7, 2018, with U.S. Senator Cory Booker
and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, our longtime champions
and advocates, as featured guests.
The S2S Newark Technology Center, created through a
formal, public-private partnership between the Newark
Public Schools, the city of Newark and S2S, is being
heralded as a national model in authentic STEM education
and urban community development. It reflects a growing
interest among diverse stakeholders to respond to the
disparities and inefficiencies in our education system; the
challenges faced by school districts in providing real,
relevant and rigorous STEM education; and to the
demands of the 21st Century workforce.
The goal of this partnership is to engage Newark students
in real-world science learning and towards high-demand New Jersey careers by beginning early to inspire and
motivate elementary students and by continuing on that experience through high school.
The center features six working laboratories for
students to visit during and outside of the traditional
school day and two studios for our web-based V-Lab
programs. Here, in commercial scientific labs
complete with modern instrumentation, middle and
high school students engage in problem-and project-
based science experiments with STEM role models
and volunteers, creating solutions to some of our
planet’s most critical issues. The V-Lab studios in
Newark have been delivering programs since April
2018. The six ISAAC laboratories, which went through
a pilot test run in April, are now fully built and ready
for operation starting Fall 2018.
The project is embedded in the Newark Public
School system and written into their 5-year strategic
plan approved by the Newark Board of Education.
By 2021, our goal is to reach over 32,000 students
(5th – 12th grade) and their parents district-wide.

Vision for the S2S Newark Technology Center
The overarching purpose of the partnership between S2S and the Newark Public Schools is to address
the needs of the public and private sectors and to bring authentic STEM education and 21st Century skill
development to all elementary, middle and high school students in Newark (over 32,000).
The S2S Newark Technology Center will serve as the hub for interactive and innovative STEM learning
for all children in Newark:
• Provide in-lab and in-class opportunities for students in Newark to conduct real-world experiments, including investigating some of our world’s greatest challenges, such as food scarcity, water purification, and constant threat of pandemics.
• Conduct district-wide virtual labs (V-Labs) where students will conduct hands-on experiments with the support of corporate mentors and role models. Example of experiments include battery power and electromagnets, thermochemistry focusing on exothermic and endothermic reactions, difference between precipitation due to solubility constraints and precipitation due to a chemical reaction.
• Educate students about 21st Century high demand STEM careers and offer real world perspectives through interactions with mentors.
• Provide professional development and technical assistance for teachers in STEM, including increased science literacy, aligning existing curricula to Next Generation Science Standards and exposing our educators to 21st Century career pathways for students.
• Further align Newark Public Schools with Next Generation Science Standards.
• Be a systemic part of science education in Newark Public Schools.

Our Signature Programs Based on eight years of experience, S2S has developed three signature programs with demonstrated impact: 1)
Improving Students Affinity and Aptitude for Careers in STEM (ISAAC) 2) V-Lab Program, a laboratory for the 21st
century and 3) Professional Development and Technical Assistance for teachers in STEM. All our programs
support the Next Generation Science Standards from 5th through 12th grades.
ISAAC (Improving Student Affinity and Aptitude for Careers in STEM) Program Improving Student’s Affinity and Aptitude for Careers in STEM (ISAAC) provides students with state-of- the-art laboratory experiences complete with modern instrumentation and experienced professional scientists, many with PhDs, who work side by side with them in the laboratory. Scientists are joined by volunteer mentors and assistant instructors who come from many disciplines in STEM as well as finance, accounting, IT, marketing and communications, data analytics, and more. For middle school students, the current programming involves three visits to the laboratory, exploring three major topics - matter, solutions, and separations. For high school students, ISAAC currently offers day-long experiences designed to introduce them to careers in pharmaceuticals, natural products and bio-technology. Next year, an Environmental

Science Day will be added to the programming. Future programs include forensics, engineering and computer science, among others. ISAAC Participants
The 2017-2018 academic year saw 87 individual
school visits and 3,012 student visits to the S2S East
Hanover Technology Center. Participating school
districts included the following: Central Bucks, East
Hanover, Greendell, Irvington, Kenilworth, Linden,
Newark, North Bergen, Paterson, Scotch Plains-Fanwood, Union City, and West Caldwell in New Jersey and North
Penn and Pennsbury in Pennsylvania.

Virtual Laboratory (V-Lab) Program
Laboratory for the 21st Century, V-Lab was designed to eliminate the geographic constraints of the ISAAC program. The V-Lab program conducts sessions via a collaborative communication platform developed in partnership with S2S, Connectivity, and the American Chemical Society. It enables students (grades 5-12) in their classrooms or non-traditional settings to simultaneously conduct a series of supplemental, age-appropriate, hands-on science experiments, along with highly-qualified instructors at S2S Technology Centers. The V-Lab program incorporates volunteer professionals to provide in-class mentoring and instruction as well as volunteer videos taped and shared at the beginning of the sessions. It also includes complete kits with lesson plans and “How to Videos” constituting a unique supplemental scientific experience for elementary, middle and high school science programs. The Connectivity platform is available with interpreters, on demand, in over 200 spoken languages as well as American Sign Language, so everyone can participate. In Newark, the program is routinely conducted in Spanish, Portuguese and American sign language, providing additional capacity to the district.

The V-Lab program offers districts a financial solution, ease of use and efficiencies. When utilized as designed, the V-Lab can be a highly cost-effective solution that brings science-rich content and professional expertise into classrooms. It can be an especially beneficial, effective, and low-cost solution for school districts with limited resources. Our current V-Lab offerings include 28
experiments: ten experiments for elementary
school, ten for middle school, and eight for high
school, including an introductory “scientific
measurements” experiment for each of the three
grade groupings. Additionally, 20 more experiments are currently in development. Examples of new V-Lab
experiments in development include building a balloon car, designing and constructing solar sails, building a
satellite, understanding weathering and erosion, and investigating thermal energy. All experiments are aligned to
the Next Generation Science Standards.
V-Lab Participants
During the 2017-2018 academic year, we served 9,499 students through 449 V-Lab sessions. Participating school
districts included Hillsborough, Irvington, Kenilworth, Newark, New Brunswick, Rahway and South Brunswick.
Additionally, we reached 14 children via two sessions at the Hackensack University Medical Center, 92 children via
eight sessions at Oasis, a shelter for children and women in need in Paterson, NJ, and 39 students via three
sessions at Urban Impact, serving at-risk youth in Pittsburgh, PA.

V-Lab and STEM Education Anytime
Science does not end in school but happens at all
times of the day, whether in school, after-school
programs, camps or with parents. S2S continues to
bring the V-Lab program into non-traditional
settings.
Our programs can have an important impact on
children outside of schools, especially among
vulnerable populations where opportunities are
extremely limited for role models or mentors in
STEM professions. In providing hands-on exposure
to science, coupled with mentors who are
professional scientists, S2S can offer them a glimpse
into a different world and the possibility of a
different, more positive future.

This past year, we partnered with Oasis, a non-profit in Paterson, NJ, which provides children and women in need
with compassionate programs designed to feed, clothe, educate and empower. S2S delivered eight V-Lab
sessions, with a total of 92 participating children, at Oasis during this past summer.
We also partnered with Urban Impact in Pittsburgh, PA, a faith-based foundation serving at-risk youth through
education, athletics, and performing arts programs. We conducted a pilot program sponsored by Thermo Fisher
Scientific and delivered three sessions to 39 students at Urban Impact this summer. These sessions received an
incredible turnout of volunteer support from Thermo Fisher Scientific. The program is expected to expand in
2018-19.
Additionally, we continue to conduct sessions at the Hackensack University Medical Center, Hackensack, NJ.
Bringing the V-Lab program to such settings is not only beneficial in diverting the children’s minds from their
illnesses and bringing a sense of normalcy to their day, but it is also highly effective in allowing them to see
science in a positive light.

Professional Development and Technical Assistance
Through participation in the ISAAC and V-Lab
programs, teachers have access to a catalog of
professional development (PD) opportunities.
Teachers may build their capacity to teach lab
sciences in their classrooms by attending ISAAC
programs with their students and earn PD hours.
Teachers who participate in V-Lab are provided
job-embedded PD. Prior to each V-Lab session,
teachers are provided with a lesson plan and links
to a “How-to Video” for every experiment. The
instructional resources increase teacher
confidence in the subject matter and support
their efforts to provide students with additional
problem-and project-based learning.
In the Newark partnership, teachers are provided
with 6 hours of professional development for each ISAAC session and 1 hour for each unique V-lab experiment.
Teachers find this to be quite valuable. During our teacher feedback surveys in Newark, teachers have requested
more professional development training and content-based instruction by STEM professionals.

Program Effectiveness
To gauge the impact of ISAAC and the V-Lab
programs on fulfilling the S2S objectives, the
following are measured: 1) increased affinity for
STEM after participation; 2) likelihood of
pursuing a STEM career; 3) improvement in
subject matter test scores; and 4) enjoyment and
appreciation of the program. S2S also tracks the
number of students hosted, volunteers
employed, demographics, and participating
schools. The effectiveness of the programs is
evaluated using teacher surveys, student
surveys, and in-class proficiency testing prior to
and after the program.
ISAAC Program 2017-18 - Highlights from our teacher and student surveys this year are as follows:
• Teacher surveys: o 100% said the S2S experience was effective in achieving the goals of inspiring, motivating, and
educating students to further pursue STEM subjects and careers o 98% said the experience supported the classroom and 100% said it supported Next Generation

Volunteering and Corporate Employee Engagement
A driving force in the success of S2S programming is the cadre
of hundreds of volunteers who work directly with students in
the ISAAC program and as part of the V-Lab experience. Our
volunteers are professional scientists working in the field,
many of them PhDs.
In both the ISAAC and V-Lab programs, volunteers act as
mentors and instructors who guide and support the students
through their experiments. The volunteers serve as role
models and introduce students to a wide variety of 21st
Century STEM career options so that students understand
firsthand the possibility of rewarding work in STEM fields.
Current corporate mentors include volunteers from the
following corporations: Avon, Becton Dickinson, Benjamin
Moore, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Celgene, Daiichi Sankyo, Merck,
Novartis, Panasonic, PerkinElmer, PSEG, and Thermo Fisher
Scientific.
In addition to our corporate partners, students are supported
in the laboratory by post-secondary students from the
surrounding area including Rutgers University, Princeton
University, NJIT, Stevens Institute for Technology, College of Saint Elizabeth, Kean University, Farleigh Dickinson
University, County College of Morris, Essex County College, and New Jersey City University who have served as
mentors and assistant instructors.
Corporate Employee Engagement
S2S offers several programs for employee engagement with a broad range of volunteer opportunities and benefits
for our corporate partners. Our volunteers can serve as mentors or assistant instructors for ISAAC, as in-class or
virtual mentors for V-Lab sessions, and as speakers in our College and Career Videos.
S2S employee engagement programs offer the following benefits for our corporate partners:
• Provide team-building opportunities and experiences
• Allow employees to view and work with their colleagues in a different capacity
• Employees work together as a team to make an impact on students
• Allow employees to give back in a meaningful, enjoyable and memorable way
• Demonstrate the company’s commitment to supporting communities which its consumers represent

• S2S provides a turnkey experience for volunteers and caters to the company’s goals

Additionally, S2S has developed two new employee engagement programs:
Kit Build for Classrooms
S2S has developed a program for corporations that are looking for large on-site employee engagement activities
which incorporate team-building while being a good community partner. Teams of employees assist S2S in
assembling kits for V-Lab experiments. These kits are sent out to schools participating in the V-Lab program. Each
kit has enough supplies to implement the experiments with 78 children. The volunteers assemble and pack all the
supplies needed for complete kits. S2S sees this as a great opportunity to recruit volunteers not only for the kit
assembly but to engage (volunteer) instructors for the ISAAC and V-Lab programs.
This program was originally developed in collaboration with Merck. This past year, we held a total of five kit build
days – three days with Merck employees and two days with Novartis employees. The events were a great
success – with incredible participation, enthusiasm and support from all. Over the five days, the volunteers helped
assemble 403 V-Lab kits, which have the potential to reach 31,434 students and 403 teachers.
On-site Employee Engagement Experiences
S2S has developed a program for STEM corporations to celebrate “Bring Your Child to Work Day” to inspire the
next generation of scientists. This program offers a meaningful day for employees and their children to engage in
scientific experiments at corporate offices. Children and their parents can fully engage in experimentation that
promotes analytical thinking, scientific literacy and reasoning, as well as an interest in science in a fun and hands-
on way. S2S has implemented the program with Merck for the past three years, with great results for both
adults and children. In 2018, 400 employees from Merck participated in the event.
Volunteer Contributions and Recognition
We are very thankful to all of our volunteer STEM professionals – in the 2017-18 school year, about
1,000 volunteers were actively involved in S2S programs, including ISAAC, V-Lab, Kit Build for
classrooms, Bring Your Child to Work Day, and other programs and events and contributed over 1,575
volunteer days.
Each year, S2S celebrates its volunteers and their incredible contributions by holding a reception and a
volunteer recognition ceremony. Special awards are given for extraordinary contributions. We like to take

Student Enrichment Programs Students 2 Science offers internships to high school
and college students to develop meaningful and
relevant experiments, communicate effectively across
multi-generations, and contemporize our offerings.
This year, we have 13 interns - five high school
students, seven college students, and a recent college
graduate -from the following schools and colleges: The
Lawrenceville School; Union County Magnet School;
Newark Academy, Livingston, NJ; The Eagle Academy
for Young Men of Newark; Seacrest Country Day
School, Naples, FL; College of Saint Elizabeth;
Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health
Sciences; Penn State University; University of Notre
Dame; University of Rochester; University of Virginia;
and Wake Forest University.
They are working on developing new experiments – 20
V-Labs, which will be ready for piloting in the 2018-19
school year, as well three ISAAC experiments that are
in the initial stages of research and development and
will be ready for implementation in the following
school year.
The ISAAC experiments focus on expanding our STEM content areas and explore topics in engineering, life
sciences and environmental science (including alternative sources of energy). Examples of the new V-Lab projects
include: reaction time & practice to introduce students to reflexes and reactions and the nervous system;
Mendel’s Monster Factory; solar sails; weathering and erosion; natural resources and synthetic materials; lunar
phases and eclipses; and generating hydrogen from water.
What’s new at S2S
A few highlights of new Projects, Programs and People at S2S:
Environmental Science Day for high schools created in partnership with the Great Swamp Watershed Association.
It will be available to students in Fall 2018 and Spring 2019. Great Swamp Watershed Association is dedicated to
protecting and improving the water resources of the Passaic River region, from the Great Swamp headwaters to
Newark Bay, for present and future generations.
Welcome Jersey City Public Schools: S2S is pleased to welcome Jersey City middle and high school students in Fall
2018 to the ISAAC program in our East Hanover location, as well as to the V-Lab program, during the traditional
daytime hours and increased afterschool offerings.
New Customer Relationship Management System: We are in the process of developing and implementing a
Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system - phase 2 of a two-part project that started with a new
website launch in 2017. The new CRM system will help ensure efficient management of our many organizational
functions and better communication with and service for our diverse stakeholders. We expect it to have a critical

Influencers Power List; and one of New Jersey’s top CEOs by COMMERCE Magazine.
- Probi Kapur is Vice President, Finance, R&D at Allergan. Mr. Kapur brings a wealth of experience in
healthcare and significant leadership skills in achieving complex business objectives in matrixed, global,
and multicultural organizations.
- Stan Nelson is the North American Director, Food and Agriculture Markets at Thermo Fisher Scientific. He
has been an active and committed member of Thermo Fisher Scientific’s diversity and inclusion strategies
since its inception over 5 years ago and serves as Co-Chair of the African Heritage Employee Resource
Group.
