Principal’s Message
Once again we have reached the end of another productive term. The students have
worked hard in class and are making good progress overall. I’ve been able to visit
most of our classes over the past 2 weeks to see how the students are engaging with
‘Reading warm-ups’ as part of the introduction of Explicit Direct Instruction. So far,
I’m impressed with what I’ve seen, but obviously the biggest impact will happen
over a longer period as we continue to sharpen and refine our teaching in this
regard.
Although it ran fairly smoothly in the end, I must apologise for the two changes to
the starting time for our Cross Country Carnival last Thursday. We usually run the
carnival after recess so as not to interupt prime learning time, but with the evolving
weather forecast the start time was adjusted earlier and earlier in the hope that we
could still complete it before the rain arrived. Thankfully, with a little bit of flexibility
from the teachers, all races were run before the heavier rain arrived. For my part, I’d
like to congratulate all the students on their effort. One particular competitor caught
my eye at the end of the 12 yrs girls race – congratulations to Jada Voigt who,
despite not having finished all her laps by the time the recess bell rang (and after the
teachers started packing up), was so determined to complete the full distance that
she powered on until the end. She did this even though other competitors who
hadn’t finished, dropped out and were on their way to recess. Even better was the
fact that Jada’s twin sister Amalie (who had finished a little ahead of her) was
waiting at the finish line cheering her sister on! These amazing girls displayed
wonderful determination, resilience and pride. I’m sure there were more examples
that I didn’t see, but this one was a good example of what’s great about the students
at Cardiff South. Well done Jada and Amalie.
There’s only 1 more day to get your Easter raffle tickets in before the draw at
assembly on Thursday. Thank you to all our families who have helped with selling
tickets and to the P&C for overseeing this Easter school tradition. P&C’s fundraising
goal this year is to assist us with replacing our old playground equipment which was
recently removed due to some concerns I had about it’s safety. Every little bit helps!
Because of the staff development day and Anzac Day public holiday, the students
return for the commencement of Term 2 on Wednesday 26th April. I wish you all a
very relaxing and enjoyable Easter break.

CBA School banking
We saw a fantastic increase in school banking deposits this term, well done savers!
Please note, due to unavoidable circumstances, there will be no school banking this Thursday; please save your
deposits for Term 2 when the program resumes on Thursday 27th April.
Anzac Services
Anzac Day falls on the Tuesday of Week 1, Term 2. Our school will host a school Anzac service on Thursday 27th
April at 2pm in the hall. This school service will be led by the school captains and school families are invited to
join us. To assist us on this day, the students are asked to bring donations of flowers from their gardens at home
to contribute to making class wreaths which will be laid at the front of the hall during this assembly. For those
interested, our school captains will also be representing the school at the Dawn Service at Cardiff RSL on Anzac
Day. The service begins at 5:15am at the cenotaph outside the club. Cardiff RSL will also be offering breakfast
following the service at a cost of $7 for adults and $3 for children, but you must book in advance to be included.
Tickets for breakfast will be available from the club’s reception from Sunday 9th April. Join us if you can.
Hunter Sports High Yr 7 2018 applications
The selection time is fast approaching for Year 6 students entering high school next year for Hunter Sports
High’s Talented Sports Programs. In 2018, Hunter Sports High will offer 13 sports – AFL, Athletics, Baseball,
Basketball, Boys Cricket, Girls Cricket, Football, Netball, Rugby League, Boys Rugby Union, Girls Rugby Union,
Swimming, Tennis and Touch Football. For more information about the sports programs, trial information, fees
etc. parents are directed to www.huntersports.com.au . If there are any specific questions not covered by the
information on the website, please call the Director of Sport, Mr James Pascoe on 49 435 755.
Canteen Menu
P&C wish to advise all families that there will be a slight price rise to a number of items on the Canteen Menu
for the start of Term 2. Raising the price of canteen items is always a last resort, but as producers and our
suppliers raise their costs it becomes necessary to raise our prices a little to ensure we are adequetely covering
our costs. The canteen committee have limited this as much as possible. The new menu with updated prices has
been sent home today with students; (1 per family) look out for a pink sheet. It has also been updated on our
website and the Skollbag app. Please ensure that you review the new price list prior to placing orders next term.

Opportunity Classes Year 5 - 2018
Opportunity classes cater for high achieving academically gifted students. These classes help gifted and talented
students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways
and providing targeted learning material at their level. Applications for opportunity classes will be available
online from 26th April. If your child is currently in Year 4 and you would like to learn more, please access the
online application and information booklet on the Department’s website at:
https://education.nsw.gov.au/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5 .
Applications close on Friday 12th May. If you’d like to know more, please chat to your child’s class teacher or
make an appointment to see Mr Holland. Please note: if your child is successful they will need to attend another
local public school where these classes operate.

Coming up in Term 2 – Mother’s Day Stall
Each year the P&C fundraising committee holds a Mother’s Day stall for all students in K-6. Traditionally,
students love a good Mother’s Day stall as it allows them to purchase a small gift for their mum, grandma or
special female carer.
For the stall to be successful, the P&C relies upon donations of small gifts,
individually wrapped in cellophane and some time from valued volunteers to
run the stall on the day; we particular love dads to help at this one!
This year’s Mother’s Day stall will be on Friday 12th May between 8am and
11am. Please save the date in your calendar. If you are available to help
through morning, even if it’s just for an hour, we’d love to hear from you.
Perhaps over the holidays you may be able to pick up a gift or two to donate
once we return after the holidays.
