FIRST LEARNING WITH DIGITAL TECH
EXPO A HUGE SUCCESS
Parents, Educators from other schools and business leaders
came along to Opaheke School’s first Learning with Digital
Tech Expo in the school hall last Thursday 13 October. This
was a student led expo where students were presenters in one
of 20 exhibits. It was fantastic to see students from the junior
and senior areas of the school presenting and many visitors
commented on how well the
students were able to
articulate how technology
is being used in their
learning. Visitors saw how
stop motion animation was
being used in literacy and
how maths was needed
when constructing in
minecraft. I learnt how to do coding and how this enhances
one of the NZ curriculum key competencies - using language,
symbols and text. Students on the Digital Citizenship booth
explained how this relates to our learning dispositions.
This was a great collective effort by students and all staff but
a particularly big effort by Associate Principal and Microsoft
Fellow, Nikkie Laing, Microsoft Innovative Educator Experts
Georgina Howell and Jodi Hill and Teachers.
STUDENTS SHOW THEIR

THREE MORE MIE TEACHERS
FOR OPAHEKE
Microsoft has awarded three more Opaheke
School teachers with the title of Microsoft
Innovative Educator Experts, or MIE
Experts for short; Nicola Hamill, Bronwyn
Clegg and Cherie Lister.
MIE Experts are part of an exclusive
program created to recognise global
educator visionaries using technology to
pave the way for better learning and
student outcomes.
These teachers join the two MIE Experts
and one fellow we already have at the
school. The MIE Experts receive additional
professional development and support from
Microsoft and the use of additional
resources while at Opaheke School. MIEs
in turn assist the school to improve
learning, and how technology can be used
to enhance this. They introduce new and
exciting innovations and collaborate with
others schools who are at different points
in their learning journey.
These teachers now join a community of
several hundred experts world wide.

Carnival 2016 – UPDATE!!! The Carnival is only 3 weeks away and we are all really excited about what we have in store this year! Thanks so much to you all for your wonderful support and donations and a huge thanks to all of the fabulous ladies who have been sewing aprons. These will be really useful on the stalls on the night. This week we are sending out requests for help for the carnival. We need help with setup, pack-up and on stalls on the night; it is a lot of fun and we need as many helpers as possible, so please complete those forms and get them back to school as soon as possible. Thanks so much!! For the three weeks from 10 –28 October we ask that you send grocery items and bottles along to school. We do ask that the grocery items are not expired as these will be used in our grocery hampers. Bottles can be anything – sauces, drinks, smellies etc – these are to be used for the Mystery Bottle Stall.
Below: Students have been
learning to play the ukulele from
Miss Grey’s mother Jan. In the
last week of the term they
performed around the school for
classes and, as can be seen here,
the office.
PRINCIPAL REQUESTS
Just a reminder to parents that if you wish to take your children out of school for
occasions other than medical appointments, illness and bereavements then a letter to the
Principal requesting permission must be submitted.
This must be completed at least one week prior to the date(s). The Principal will then
provide a written reply to your request.
COMBINED PASIFIKA FONO AND
MAORI HUI
WEDNESDAY 26 OCTOBER
School Hall at 6.30pm - 7.30pm
We would love to invite all whanau of Maori and Pasifika
students along to a combined meeting next Wednesday.
We would like all parents and caregivers coming to the
meeting to bring their children if they are in Kapa Haka so
they can perform 2 waiata before the meeting.
After the meeting there will be a light supper and hot drink.
In the holidays, Hawaiki H and his whanau worked with Leilani
from the Papakura Art Gallery to transfer Hawaiki's flag design
onto a Chorus box
next to our school.
You can see this
artwork on Opaheke
Road at the top of
Tasman Drive. We
love your work
Hawaiki.
SATURDAY HOCKEY TOURNAMENT
The winning team was "Josh, Joel and the bros" and consisted of Joshua J., Joel N., Zach J., Hatepe W., Connor G., Taine C. and Ben M.
There was a very high standard of competition from all the students that took part, with most of the games being very close in score. The event managed to fundraise $150 towards Year 6 camp.
Room 2 Art Project
S p r i n g h a s s p r u n g
Using a colour scheme based on analogous
colours, Room 2 created spring flower art.
We used textured card, crayon and dye to create
our pieces of art.
There were several steps we worked through. This involved dying large pieces of card then cutting them to size and shapes so we could create a layered
flower effect.

Junior School on Monday. We learned
to watch out for sneaky driveways, how
to make our seatbelts click and to walk
safely on footpaths.
Last week, the Junior School presented

how we use educational apps and One

Afterwards we decided to
sketch Ronald McDonald to go

TOUCH
We now have 8 school teams playing touch this year on Tuesday evenings which
is more than ever before. It is great to see so many students getting involved in
physical activity. A reminder that Opaheke School has subsidised the cost for
students. We always stress to students the importance of fair play. As these are
school teams we insist that parents also show fair play and behave appropriately
as good spectators. Please read the Fair Play Code for Parents and Supporters:
THE FAIRPLAY CODE FOR PARENTS AND SUPPORTERS
Good sport is about positive attitude. You can set the right tone and help make the game
a success. Play your part – play fair. To the best of your ability you will:
• Encourage your child, and other people’s children, in their efforts in sport
• Insist that your child plays within the rules and by the principles of fair play
• Make an effort to understand the rules (modified) of the game
• Respect your child’s efforts regardless of whether they have won or lost
• Display self-control on the sideline
• Always be positive, never shout at or ridicule players
• Support good play and applaud good performance from all competitors
• Show your appreciation to people who volunteer their time so your child can play
• Remember that your child plays sport for their reasons not yours, never place undue
pressure on your child to play or perform
• Be a positive role model for your child
• Give it your full effort
