• A unique opportunity to participate in a 2-week cultural immersion program to West Africa.– Deliver a nursing educational intervention to

Cameroonian students at the University of Buea– Participate in nursing research that expands to the

existing knowledge surrounding HIV in a resource limited setting

– Anchored in a nursing education framework, experience a culture which will broaden personal understanding of global health needs

Course details

• HIV Nursing: Caring and Concepts elective– NURS 4800R (Spring I 2011 term)– Etiology– Epidemiology– Psychosocial Dimensions– Managing the Care of the HIV-Infected person in a

Resource Limited Setting

Train-the-Trainer

• Content– Overview of HIV illness (local and global perspectives)– Care of the pregnant patient infected with HIV– Post birth feeding decision making options

• Process– Mini presentations by each US student– Active learning strategies in pod format of knowledge

transfer• Research

– US and Cameroonian Students as enrolled study participants

Cultural Immersion

• Partnerships with Cameroonian nursing students• March in the World Women’s Day Parade in Buea

– Local dress– Pygmy camp site Lobe River tour in Kribi region– African Art museum with local dance and lunch

• Mt. Cameroon climb (Optional with additional expense)• Limbe Fisherman’s market tour and lunch• Douala City Tour with visit to local craft market• Visit local primary school and student interaction activities in

Kribi• Visit Animal Rehabilitation Center in Buea

Incidentals

• Program Cost: Approximately $4500-$6000 US dollars – Includes: Travel, lodging, most meals, entrance to cultural

excursions

• Tuition for 3-credit course (NURS 4800R)• Scholarship of $3500 available to each selected student

to defray program costs

Incidentals

• Additional responsibility for the following:– Some meals– Souvenirs & personal purchases– Valid US Passport

• Sufficient expiration date– Entry Visa into Cameroon– Immunizations

• Yellow Fever vaccination• Up to date Tetanus• Hepatitis A

– Medications• Malaria prophylaxis

Program Requirements

• Pre-licensure program– Currently enrolled – Any stage

• By Spring I 2011 term, completion of (or current enrollment in) either of the following courses:– N3360 Nursing of the Childbearing Family– N4955 Women’s Health Nursing

• Enrollment in N4800R HIV Nursing: Caring and Concepts in the Spring I 2011 academic term

• French language competency is NOT required
