Getting the most out of Study at Victoria Open DayWelcome to Victoria University. Our Open Day is your next step to learn about living and studying in the capital. Throw yourself in and make sure you get all your questions answered.

THINGS TO DO

Get startedDrop off your bags at one of our Welcome Rooms, grab a coffee and get going.

Put a plan in place Make sure your work out a plan for the day and get to the sessions and visit the expos that you most want to check out.

Hot topics We have special lectures from each of our faculties throughout the day. Learn what makes our staff passionate about what they teach, and see an example lecture.

Halls of residence Come and experience what residential life is like on and around campus. Our halls of residence are all open and there will be tours of their facilities and rooms.

Grab some kai Stay hydrated and fed, pick up a snack on the go from one of our refuelling stations around campus.

Activities and competitions There will be live entertainment throughout the day in the Hunter Lounge, and music and entertainment around campus from our students. ‘Like’ our future students Facebook page to keep up to date with the latest information about competitions and other events happening during the day.

Getting to and from the Kelburn campusThe main entrances to the Kelburn campus are on Kelburn Parade. If you’re not sure where to start, enter through Gate 3 and come into the Hub. You’ll find lots of open-day activities and student guides who will direct you.

BY CABLE CARIt’s a 10-minute walk along Kelburn Parade from the cable car Salamanca (University) stop to the Gate 3 entrance to the Kelburn campus (see the map on pages 19).

FROM THE RAILWAY STATION Student guides will be waiting near the main entrance of the railway station in the morning. They will guide you to our free buses going directly to the Kelburn campus that will be running every 15 minutes between 8am and 9.15am.

After 9.15am, you can hop on the looping buses that will stop at key Victoria locations around Wellington (see page 6). The buses depart from Rutherford House, Bunny Street (next to the Buzzy Bee signpost).

BY CARDue to the lack of parking spaces around the University and heavy traffic, we recommend that you do not bring a car—however, there is limited free parking available at our Waiteata Road car park during the day.

FROM THE AIRPORTWe will be running shuttles to the university from 7.30am to 9.30am. Our staff will be waiting by the baggage claim area with signs and more information about where to go. The shuttles will run every 15 minutes or so. If they get too busy, you can jump into a taxi (about $30 to Kelburn campus) or the Airport Flyer (bus 91) from the airport to the city.

BY SCHOOL BUSYour school will arrange drop-off and pick-up points for you, and these will most likely be around Kelburn Parade. Enter through Gate 3.

BY PUBLIC BUSThe 17, 18, 20, 22, 23 and 47 buses stop on Kelburn Parade. Go to www.metlink.org.nz for timetables.

MASSEY UNIVERSITY, WELTEC AND WHITIREIA BUSESConnecting buses will be running between the Kelburn campus, Massey University, WelTec and Whitireia.

Massey UniversityDeparting Massey at 8.15am, 9.15am, 10.15am, 11.15am, 12.15pm and 1.15pm.

Departing Victoria from under the overbridge on Kelburn Parade at 8.30am, 9.30am, 10.30am, 11.30am, 12.30pm and 1.30pm.

WelTec and WhitireiaWelTec and Whitireia inner-city campuses are open on 28 August. These include WelTec Church Street campus and the Hospitality School, Whitireia Wellington campus and Performance Centre, New Zealand Film and Television School and Computer Power Plus.

Shuttles will leave Victoria every half hour from 10am to 2.30pm from under the overbridge on Kelburn Parade.

When you arriveWELCOME ROOMSOur Welcome Rooms will be open between 8am and 3.30pm. Student guides will help you find your way around and give you advice on how to make the most of the day. You can also drop your bags off at these rooms at the start of the day. You’ll find Welcome Rooms at the following locations:

• room 119, Cotton building

• room 102, Murphy building

• room 301, Old Kirk building.

MĀORI STUDENTSJoin our Māori team in room 106, Alan MacDiarmid building (see map on pages 20–21) any time between 8am and 3.30pm. Breakfast will be available throughout the morning.

PASIFIKA STUDENTSJoin our Pasifika team any time between 8am and 3.30pm, in room 101, Alan MacDiarmid building (see map on pages 20–21). Breakfast will be available throughout the morning.

ASKING FOR HELPWe will have our student guides (identifiable by their Victoria University t-shirts) all around the campus to help out during the day.

BREAKFAST AND LUNCHBetween 8am and 10am, you can get a breakfast snack and hot drink to keep you going.

Between 11am and 2pm, come along to a free BBQ in the Tim Beaglehole Courtyard, outside the Hub (see map on pages 20–21).

Tours, expos and course planningLOOPING BUSESIf you want to visit Victoria’s other campuses and halls of residence, you can use our free looping bus service. These hop-on/hop-off buses depart from Gate 3 (under the overbridge on Kelburn Parade). The first bus will depart at 9am and the final bus will depart at 3.10pm, returning to the Kelburn campus at 3.50pm.

Allow plenty of time in your schedule, as the bus timetable may not match up with tour times.

HALLS OF RESIDENCE TOURSYou can also talk with our Accommodation Service staff at the student services expo.

Te Puni Village and Weir HouseWalking tours will go to both Te Puni Village and Weir House. The hour-long tours will depart from the Tour Stand outside room 102, Alan MacDiarmid building, at 9am, 10am, 11am, 12 noon, 1pm and 2pm. You are free to leave the tour at any point.

Helen Lowry HallA shuttle bus will operate every 20 minutes between 11am and 3pm. The bus will leave from Maclaurin building at Gate 3 (see map on pages 20–21).

Other hallsThroughout the day, you can take short tours of Boulcott Hall, Joan Stevens Hall, Katharine Jermyn Hall, Stafford House, Cumberland House and Victoria House.

The tours do not have scheduled start times but will operate regularly from the halls’ receptions between 9am and 3pm. Visit these halls on our looping buses, or find your own way, using the walking map at the back of this booklet.

*This stop will serve Joan Stevens Hall, Katharine Jermyn Halll and Boulcott Hall. There will be student reps to guide you or you can use the walking map available on the day to find your way. Boulcott Hall is located at 47 Boulcott Street, Joan Stevens Hall is located at 132 The Terrace and Katharine Jermyn Hall is located at 100 Boulcott Street.

CAMPUS TOURS

KelburnForty-minute walking tours of the Kelburn campus begin at 9.20am, 10.10am, 11am, 11.50am, 12.40pm and 1.30pm. Meet at the Tour Desk in the Hub (Level 2, Victoria Info Ihonui).

Pipitea (Faculty of Law and Victoria Business School)Thirty-minute walking tours of the Pipitea campus begin at 11am, 12 noon and 1pm. Meet at the Information Pod at Rutherford House.

Te Aro (Faculty of Architecture and Design)Thirty-minute walking tours of the Te Aro campus leave from the ground floor atrium at 10.30am, 11.25am, 12.20pm, 1.15pm and 2.10pm.

EXPOSVisit expos for our faculty, school and student services between 8.30am and 3.30pm. These will be in Level 2 of the Hub and at Maclaurin, Cotton and Alan MacDiarmid buildings (see map on pages 20–21).

COURSE PLANNINGThere will be course-planning sessions run throughout the day. See the session timetables (page 8) for details. Student liaison officers will also be available to give individual first-year course planning advice on Thursday 27 August.
