The Piedmont Plateau

Confederation

Page 2: Study guide for 8th graders

The plateau extends from New Jersey to Alabama. It’s located between the coastal plains and the foot of the Appalachian Mountains. Towards the eastern boundary is the Coastal Plain. To the west, the Piedmont is mostly bounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, the easternmost range of the main Appalachians.

The Piedmont Plateau was the place where the colonists planted and grew their crops efficiently once they finally learned how to do it. The soil was very good and the land was sometimes flat and sometimes had rolling hills. This was the perfect agricultural compromise between the marshy lands on the coast to the east and to the rugged mountains in the west.

The Appalachian Mountains

The Appalachian Mountains extend from Maine all the way down to Alabama. The Appalachian chain is a barrier to east-west travel as it forms a series of alternating ridgelines and valleys oriented in opposition to any road running east-west.

The mountains proved to be the border for the original colonies. The colonists kept moving west till they hit the mountains, at which point

they figured that they’d stop at the foot of the mountains. People sooner or later made their way past/over the mountains.

The Mayflower Compact

Page 8: Study guide for 8th graders

The Mayflower Compact was the first set of laws written in the New World. Almost half of the colonists were part of a separatist group seeking the freedom to practice Christianity according to their own determination and not the will of the English Church. promising to live in peace with each other and to work for the common good, before they set foot in Plymouth. It was signed on November 11, 1620 by 41 of the ship's 101 passengers

We will constitute equal laws. We believe that covenants will be honored between God and man.

The New England

Confederation

Page 10: Study guide for 8th graders

The New England Confederation consisted of Connecticut, New Haven, Plymouth, and Massachusetts Bay Colony. The organization was to be composed of two delegates from each of the four member colonies. Six of the eight votes were necessary to adopt any measure. Regular annual meetings were to be held, but additional conferences could be called in cases of emergency.
