Learning Chinesein TAIWAN

Taiwan is an ideal place for international students who want to learn Mandarin Chinese, also called Mandarin, Huayu, Guoyu, Hanyu, Putonghua, and Zhongwen in Chinese-speaking communities around the world, and Modern Standard Chinese. Taiwan is also an ideal place to learn to read and write Chinese characters, something that will enable you to communicate, in writing, with people who speak other Chinese dialects. The traditional character forms are still used in Taiwan. Learning these is essential for any student who plans to become a translator and they allow you to more fully appreciate the Chinese language, across the centuries.

There are 52 Chinese Language Centers located at colleges and universities throughout Taiwan, offering classes year-round. The instruction and teaching materials are top-notch and designed to help students achieve their language goals. INTRODUCTION

In 2009, Hwa Hsia University of Technology was awarded a grant of NT$ 40 million for University of Science and Technology Award Teaching Excellence Project that is launched by Ministry of Education. There are about 90 universities or colleges in technological and vocational education (TVE) system, and only 32 of them can get the grant. National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) was originally founded in Shanghai in 1896 under the name of Nanyang College, and it shares the same origin as the Jiaotong Universities in mainland China. Bringing Nanhua to the World and the World to Nanhua

INTRODUCTION

Located in Chiayi, Taiwan, Nanhua University was founded in 1996 by Venerable Master Hsing Yun. Through the support of millions of Fo Guang Shan worshippers, the first comprehensive university of Fo Guang Shan was funded. The school is also a member of “Fo Guang Shan’s Associated Universities,” the country’s first cross-nation university system. Currently, the school has about 5,500 students and a strong faculty of 220 full-time teachers. The proportion of assistant professors to full-time teachers above is more than 96%, and the proportion of doctorates among them is 91%, which means the school ranks among the top private universities.

INTRODUCTION

National Chiayi University was formed in February 2000 by merging two existing colleges in Chiayi, i.e., National Chiayi Institute of Technology (NCIT) and National Chiayi Teachers College (NCTC). INTRODUCTION

The National University of Kaohsiung (NUK) was founded in 2000 to promote the balanced development of higher education between southern and northern Taiwan and to coordinate the government’s industrial policy. Therefore, NUK has superb geographical location and is very close to the Nanzhi Export Zone and public transportation, such as Kaohsiung MRT stations. Surrounded by industry clusters, NUK has great advantages of research and academia-industry development. Wenzao, Your Key to the World.

INTRODUCTION

Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages was founded by Ursuline sisters of the Roman Union of the Order of St.Ursula in 1966. It is a catholic university named in honor of Wenzao Lo, the fitst Chinese Bishop. Wenzao is the first and the only university of languages in Taiwan.

The University has established and maintains collaborative relations with 236 universities and higher education institutions from countries in Asia, America, Europe, Oceania and Africa. Collaboration between Wenzao and foreign universities and institutions covers various areas such as exchange of students and faculty, study visits, and research and teaching collaboration.

INTRODUCTION

Established in 1948, NTTU is the only higher institution in Taitung. Promoting the cultural, educational, and local development in the region, NTTU is an exquisite university with many features.

Student accommodation has two room types: 4-student room and 2-student room, all on suite. Campus accommodation is guaranteed to international students.

International students may submit the scholarship application along with the admission application. Scholarship for newly admitted international students: 1st academic year NT$ 5,000 per month. Scholarship for currently enrolled international students: students whose average grades of the previous academic year all pass: the next academic year NT$ 5,000 per month.

The Foundation for International Cooperation in Higher Education of Taiwan (FICHET) is a non-profit organization, founded in 2005. Currently, representing 116 member universities.

FICHET has been given the responsibility by the government to function as a platform for international cooperation between Taiwanese and foreign universities. Keeping the most current information on higher education in Taiwan and work for integrating, exchanging and sharing the resources of all members, creating more constructive cooperation with international academic societies.

Ultimately the goal of FICHET is to advance the globalization of Taiwanese higher education and to proudly exhibit its merits on an international stage.
