Switched-on thinking

2

Choosing where to study can take

some thought. This booklet shows

why we think Wales can provide

everything you are looking for

when it comes to finding the right

international study destination.

Wales is a place where you cantruly discover your full potential

and energise your career. It has

respected schools, colleges and

universities that award internationally

recognised qualifications, excellent

teaching staff and welcoming,

safe surroundings, where you can

improve your English language

skills and gain valuable experience.

Wales offers you the chance to

explore a country rich in heritage

and cultural diversity, which is

always thinking ahead and working

innovatively to maintain a sustainable

environment. A country full of

character, natural resources and

beauty, raw energy and pure

creativity – and perhaps, most

importantly, a country that is

totally switched on when it comes

to your future.

‘I was excited about the new experience of studying in another

country: making new friends, learning about new and different

cultures, and the ability to travel throughout Wales and the UK,

as well as nearby European countries.’

Dianna Wise, Canada, MA Creative Writing, Trinity College, Carmarthen

Why Wales? There’s no single answer, but we can

give you lots of great reasons. We’d

like to share these with you so you

get a good idea of what makes Wales

a really great place to experience UK

culture and the ideal study choice.

Small country, huge welcomeWhile Wales may be small in

geographical size, it more than makes

up for it with its huge welcoming

heart. Each year 8,000 international

students get to know and benefit

from the warm welcome and strong

sense of community as soon as they

arrive on Welsh soil.

Rock-solid foundation

Historically, Wales has successfully

built its economy on its natural

resources. Welsh slate in particular,

is famous around the globe. By

choosing and using our resources

carefully, we bring out the very

best in our produce and our people.

Our education system reflects this.

Wales’ fantastic choice of universities,

colleges, schools and specialist

institutions, coupled with a great

variety of study and research

programmes for students of all ages,

give you the perfect opportunity to

build a foundation for your future.

Traditionally forward-thinking

Wales is a country known for its

forward-thinking: from producing

the first ever mail order shopping

company to introducing innovative

organic farming methods and

establishing some of the world’s

most effective renewable energy

sources – more than 25 offshore

and onshore wind farms currently

exist here, and there are plans

to build hundreds of extra wind

turbines over the next few years.

‘Swansea University is a great place, not only

for academic study but also for the activities outside

the campus. The people are very friendly. It reminds

me of where I come from in south-east China.’

‘Studying and living here has taught

me so much about what is possible

in life, and I’m enjoying every minute.

Now I’m even more ambitious.’

‘This has been an amazing opportunity

for me to create a bridge between academia

and industry. My work provides architects

and interior designers with sustainableproducts from locally sourced material,

which are aesthetically pleasing and

functionally durable.’

Tyra Oseng, Norway, PhD student, Swansea University

A Welsh education

Education in Wales is well respected

and recognised by employers

and academic institutions around

the world. Independent surveys

have shown that students in Wales

consistently enjoy a better quality

of life than many of their counterparts

elsewhere. It’s easy to understand why.

A high proportion of campuses are

based in or near areas noted for

their outstanding beauty and within

walking distance of the coast. As

most facilities are centrally located

in towns and cities, you get the

best of everything when it comes to

location. It also means you can save

money on transport costs and live

just a stone’s throw away from your

next class.

Developing natural resources;

sustaining futures

Our education system focuses on

you as an individual, giving you the

choice and flexibility to pursue your

goals through a vast number of

subjects, in some of the country’s

Let us entertain you

Festivals continue to play a

huge role in Welsh culture and

are a fantastic way of bringing

people together no matter

where they come from or

what their backgrounds are.

The first National Eisteddfod was

held in 1176, to promote Welsh

culture and language. Now, this

time-honoured festival continues

to attract 160,000 visitors each

year. With colourful costumes,

music and poetry, competitions

and events, all rounded off with

a fireworks display and torchlit

procession, this is a spectacle

that demonstrates the continuing

tradition of Welsh culture.

The Llangollen International

Musical Eisteddfod not only

incorporates Welsh culture

but also welcomes competitors

from over 50 countries.

In terms of age, S^wn Fest music

and arts festival is a baby in

comparison with the National

Eisteddfod but is growing

up fast on the music scene.

Showcasing contemporary

music, it takes place across

three days in 19 venues.

Abersoch is the backdrop for

Wakestock – Europe’s largest

wakeboarding festival spread

across three sites on the Llyn

Peninsula – which combines

extreme sports with great local

and international music.

One of the festival’s most notable

characteristics is its eclectic

line-up. From dance DJs to heavy

metal, Welsh language bands

to American indie, festival-goers

can always expect to have a

great time.

The Green Man Festival takes

place in the spectacular Glanusk

Park, Powys, featuring live folk

music, comedy, literature, film,

DJs and children’s areas. People

can sit by the ‘dusk ’til dawn

camp fire’, enjoy the late night

 jamming sessions and relax

in the healing/chill-out areas

around the site.

Wales offers a unique and vibrant

culture steeped in its 3,000-year-old

history. The dragon is the perfect

symbol of its original thinking: bold

and imaginative.

Wales is a land where old and new

sit happily side by side: the capital,Cardiff, is a perfect example.

Here you will find the innovative

architecture of The Senedd – the

newly built home of Wales’ National

Assembly – just around the corner

from the historical site of a 2,000-

year-old castle (one of 641 in Wales),

and peaceful parks only a few steps

away from the city centre buzz.

The land of the dragon’s comfortable

mix of tradition and modernity offers

students from across the world the

perfect place to feel at home.

A taste of Wales

Wales has a variety of well-known

traditional dishes and local organic

produce: Caerphilly cheese, Welsh

lamb, oysters and mussels, cawl

(soup), crempogs (buttermilk

pancakes) and Welsh rarebit – an

interpretation of cheese on toast;

while taffy (toffee) and bara brith

cake are recommended for those

with a sweet tooth.

For something a little different, try

stewed whelks (sea snails) in laver

bread. Laver bread – sometimes

referred to as Welsh caviar – is a

Welsh delicacy made from seaweed

straight from our coastline and

black in colour.

Of course, Wales has a large selection

of restaurants, cafés, pubs, takeaways

and specialist food stores where

you can find a great variety of

international cuisine and ingredients,

and sample all of the above.

Designer outlets to craft fairs

From large shopping centres

and high street designer shops to

handmade arts and crafts, second-

hand bookstores and pottery villages,

whatever it is you’re looking to buy,

you’ll find it.

Going places

Getting here and going places

couldn’t be easier: Cardiff

International Airport offers over 50

direct destinations and more than

400 worldwide connecting flights.

Wales is a great base for exploring

further afield – Manchester/Liverpool/Birmingham are only

an hour and a half away by road

(travel within the UK doesn’t require

separate visas) and a number

of low-cost airlines fly to many

destinations from nearby UK airports.

Ferry links to Ireland are frequent

and with London only two hoursaway, you can easily hop on the

Eurostar high-speed train to Europe

or fly out to almost any international

destination of choice.
