Building a field of
knowledge
This is used to:Recall and relay existing knowledge.
Use background knowledge to predict new meanings and events.
Examine other aspects of a topic that will assist in understanding.

Interacting with a
Text
This is used to:Identify the purpose within the text, by reading with intent.

Responding to text
This is used to:Retell the meaning of the text from your own perspective.
Consider different perspectives.

Before you can make notes about your textbook, you need to READ your text
book.This involves 2 steps:
• Reading for background understanding.• Interacting with the text, which requires
three actions from you.
Interacting with the text:After you have read through the text, get THREE different coloured highlighters/colouring pencils/markers.• Use the first marker to identify the MAIN IDEA in
each paragraph.• The second marker is used to identify
ADDITIONAL, important information (dates, names, ratio’s)
• The third marker is used to identify ONE part of the text that changes how you understand the work.
