Language, study planning, western art music history, and music theory studies and research and writing skills

LANGUAGE STUDIES, INTRODUCTION

Pursuant to the Decree on University Degrees (794/2004), Section 6, students who have received their basic education in Finnish or Swedish must demonstrate in studies included in education for a lower or higher university degree or otherwise that he/she has attained:

1. proficiency in Finnish and Swedish, which is required of civil servants in bilingual public agencies and organisations under Section 6(1) of the Act on the Knowledge of Languages Required of Personnel in Public Bodies (424/2003) and which is necessary for their field; and

2. skills in at least one foreign language which is necessary for following developments in the field and to operate in an international environment.

At the Sibelius Academy, the core language studies (8 ECTS credits in total) include

1. Foreign language reading and writing skills (2 ECTS credits),2. Foreign language oral skills (3 ECTS credits), and3. Second national language (Finnish/Swedish) oral, reading, and writing skills (3 ECTS credits).

Students who have had their schooling in a language other than Finnish or Swedish or in a foreign country will either study Finnish or Swedish and a foreign language, as outlined in the Decree on University Degrees, Section 6, or complete Finnish language studies worth at least 4 ECTS credits.

Optional foreign languagesThe foreign language study options include English, Spanish, Italian, French, German, or Russian. At the Sibelius Academy, it is possible to complete courses in English and German oral, reading, and writing skills.

Preparatory coursesStudents who have not completed the upper secondary school course in languages or who need to supplement their language skills may attend a preparatory course.

Optional language studiesThe Sibelius Academy offers courses in Italian, French, and German for students of music, allowing students to learn languages according to their needs and interests. Students who have begun their studies in the Degree Programme in Vocal Music on 1 August 2005 or

later will complete courses in German and Italian (see the Degree Programme in Vocal Music).

CORE LANGUAGE STUDIES (8 ECTS credits, 214 hrs in total)

The six levels of proficiency are defined in accordance with the European Framework of Reference for Languages (A1-C2).

RequirementsPass the proficiency test or complete the course.

Proficiency test: It is recommended that all students take the proficiency test in English Reading and Writing Skills to test their knowledge of music English. If the student passes the test, he/she will be credited for the course. If it seems, on the basis of the proficiency test, that the student needs to improve his or her language skills, they will be directed to a suitable group. The student can take the proficiency test again when he/she has completed the course in English Reading and Writing Skills. If the student improves his/her language skills substantially, i.e. by studying in an English-speaking environment, he/she may take the proficiency test again without taking the course. The proficiency test is based on the online material at http://www2.siba.fi/kielimateriaalit/.

Course: There are three different alternatives as to the duration of the course. The intensive course spans two weeks and meets six afternoons during these two weeks. The Monday course spans six weeks and meets once a week on Monday mornings. The online course spans a semester. The study begins with a meeting and continues as supervised distance learning and independent work in the electronic learning platform Optima. Students are required to attend the classes regularly, complete the assignments, and pass the final examination. After completing the course, students are free to take the English reading and writing skills proficiency test as many times as necessary to pass the exam.

Course: It will normally take longer than one semester to complete the course, but there are classes with a double-speed option. Continuous assessment will be made of class attendance and completed assignments.

Learning outcomesTo help students with fluency in communicating in music-related Swedish both orally and in writing, so that they both understand the language and are able to use it. The examination is an interview that tests listening comprehension and oral skills. If the student fails the proficiency test, he/she is advised to enrol in a suitable Swedish class. Students are not allowed to take the test more than once, except in special cases at the teachers' discretion. The proficiency test is based on the online material at http://www2.siba.fi/kielimateriaalit/.

Course: The course usually lasts for one term, but an accelerated option is also available. Students are required to attend the classes regularly, complete the written and oral assignments, and pass the final examination. The multimodal online course is intended for students with independent study skills and upper secondary school level skills in Swedish. The course includes six meetings for oral practice and supervised distance learning in the electronic learning platform Optima.

The course expands and increases the student's knowledge in one of the areas introduced in modules 1-6. ObjectiveFinnish Music (mhm12) is an introductory course in Finnish music and musical life with an emphasis on the development since the 1890s. It is designed for foreign students and does not correspond to Suomen musiikin historia (lmhm14). Selected works of representative composers from Jean Sibelius (1865–1957) to Magnus Lindberg (b. 1958) will be discussed.
