6 stylemg.com - October 2012
Unless, of course, it’s a Style
Readers’ Choice Award! In
that case, winning is quite
impressive. Over the years, our an-
nual contest of readers’ choices for
local favorites has become the talk
of the town, with competition be-
coming increasingly fierce. We are
all presented with hundreds if not
thousands of choices a day, some
decisions easier than others, but
the ones we celebrate this month
are those shared by many. With
thousands of votes counted, this year we proudly give you an expanded list – includ-
ing many new categories – of local winners. The numerous awardees run the gamut
from favorite breakfast place and favorite place to get vegetarian food to favorite
kids’ activity and favorite pet groomer, all the way
to favorite local athlete, favorite wedding DJ and
favorite best kept secret.
My favorite secret, which is secret no more, is
keeping this month’s magazine handy in my car
or purse for when I’m in the market for something
new...like a new Thai restaurant or somewhere
to get my oil changed. It’s a good reference for
finding people, businesses, services and activities
that have been approved of by so many fellow
residents.
Speaking of secrets, if you have a high school
senior this year, don’t miss Melissa Magliola’s
“Countdown to College” in Our Kids. She gives
succinct strategies and tips to ease the stress and
increase a kid’s success throughout the college
admissions process.
Also in this issue, make your next party (the
holidays are on our heels!) a winner with Jamila
Khan’s “Host with the Most” in Home Design. Add
a little spark to your shin-dig with these seven
hospitable must-haves. And since you will also
want to look glowing at your gatherings, check
out “Forever Young” in Health & Wellness for the
best anti-aging products on the market. From
creams and serums to hair and smile care, the list
will set you on a path to the fountain of youth.
Looking to get involved in the community or find a new activity? Find more to see and
do within the pages of What’s Up, FYI and the Calendar. Until next month, enjoy the
new season in town and let your old favorites know how much you love them. •— Desiree
We’d love to hear from you – send us your community events (for Calendar),
your favorite recipe & photo (for Thanksgiving Reader Recipes), and any
other story ideas to [email protected].
winning isn’t everything...

Welcome to October! As Thomas Merton so famously
said, “October is a fine and dangerous season in
America…a wonderful time to begin anything at
all.” Home weatherization services are available to all income-
qualified residents living in El Dorado County. This federally funded
program can provide free energy efficiency upgrades to your
home – including attic insulation, caulking, heating/cooling system
repair and other conservation measures – helping you reduce your
energy costs. To see if you qualify, contact the el Dorado County
Department of Human services at 530-621-6150...On October
8, the el Dorado Union High school District will host its annual

“Things like that profoundly change your
life,” Harlow says. “It changed me. It made
me have more empathy.” After obtaining
her master’s in social work, Harlow spent
several years working at Snowline Hospice

an organization that helps provide meals
and other crucial end-of-life services for
people living both at home and in long-

What kind of wood should I
burn in my wood fireplace?
The most important thing to
know about what kind of wood
to burn is that it needs to be dry and
seasoned. Wet or “green” fresh-cut
wood will create more problems for
the stove or fireplace operation and
produce more creosote in the chimney.
In our area, oak is the preferred wood
for the highest BTU output and longest
burn time. It’s always a good idea to
have a soft wood on hand, like cedar,
to use for starting your fire. Manzanita
is plentiful in El Dorado County but is
not recommended, as it burns danger-
ously hot.

When should a decision about
entering a hospice program be
made, and who should make it?
Hospice care is ideal for people
with six months or less to live,
if the disease they have runs its nor-
mal course. Oftentimes, patients have
an end-stage illness such as cancer,
cardiac disease, lung disease, kidney
disease, AIDS or a neurological disor-
der. The decision to start hospice is
an emotional one; the conversation is
often started by a physician, then con-
tinued by the patient, their family and
friends, as they decide that they desire
to change from curative measures to
those of comfort.

Main Street’s Placerville Coffee De-
pot is a great place to grab a fresh
cup of hot or iced brew, but I was
in the mood for a sweet treat on the oc-
casion of my first visit and searched the
menu for something that would hit the
spot without causing a sugar rush. The
Cinnamon Crunch Muffin caught my eye,
and I couldn’t have been more satisfied
with the $2 delight. The spicy warmth of cin-
namon blended perfectly with the moist, buttery
consistency of every fresh-baked bite and left my taste buds dreaming of festive
fall foods to come. I washed it down with a 20 oz. Arnold Palmer and ordered
two oatmeal raisin cookies to go, so imagine my surprise when the bill came to
just $4.75. That’s right – I quenched my thirst and more than satisfied a serious
craving for baked goods for less than a fiver. The Placerville Coffee Depot, which
also offers breakfast combinations and smoothies at its convenient drive thru and
walk-up windows, will keep me coming back thanks to a welcome combination of
high-quality eats, affordable prices and stellar customer service. Placerville Coffee

Whether it’s a goat in a hometown Fourth of July parade or a horse being
led along a crosswalk on Main Street, “Only in Placerville…” is a common
sentiment among people of the community. One of Placerville’s most
popular “only in” moments – the Downtown Placerville Spooktacular – happens every
year on October 31 and transforms Main Street into a magical place of costumes and
candy.
The Placerville Downtown Association, City of Placerville, Placerville Active 20/30
Club and Placerville Lion’s Club will come together to create a safe environment of fun
and frivolity. More than 500 people will start the evening on Placerville’s historic Main
Street with trick-or-treating from 4-6 p.m. (many stores will stay open late). Families
with children ages 10 and under are invited to the children’s carnival at Town Hall from
4-6 p.m.; free games, prizes and treats will all be provided by the Placerville Lion’s
Club.
Attendees will also enjoy family-friendly beats, as a DJ broadcasts live from the
Bell Tower until 7 p.m. At 6:10 p.m., the costume contest begins around the Bell Tower.
Remember, creativity counts! Placerville’s Active 20/30 Club will award prizes for the
best costumes in all age groups: 3 and under, 4-6, 7-9, 10-13, 14-17 and adults. Grand
prizes will be awarded for best overall costumes.
“Only in Placerville” will you have such a fab-boo-lous time at the Downtown
Placerville Spooktacular!

Portions of Main Street will be closed from 3-8 p.m.; parking will be available
at the downtown parking garage and various City lots. For more information,

ALBUMSTHEN: Infinite Arms – Band of Horses
Almost pop, a little bit rock, a touch
of folk – it’s hard to describe Band of
Horses’ Infinite Arms. Sweeping melo-
dies will swirl in your head for days and
gorgeous vocal harmonies will bring a
smile to your face merely because of
their sweetness. Are we overselling? You
tell us.
NOW:The Carpenter – The Avett Brothers
The Avett Brothers are the perfect com-
pliments to the ghouls and goblins on
the loose this October. Their seventh
studio album, The Carpenter returns to
the trademark simplicity of 2009’s I and
Love and You, but tracks like “Paul New-
man Vs. The Demons” show they haven’t
forgotten how to get loud.

DVDsTHEN: Carnival of Souls
Made in 1962 for $33,000, Carnival of Souls
is a must for fans of Lynch and Romero, or
horror in general. With its unique score
and unsettling sound and visual design,
Carnival of Souls is more of a stylistic hor-
ror movie than blood and guts (there isn’t
any); a curiously unsettling piece of film-
making for this holiday month.
NOW: The Cabin in the Woods
From the mind of Buffy/Firefly genius
Joss Whedon, this flick starts out as a
paint-by-numbers “teens go camping”
horror story. You’ll think you’ve seen the
movie before, right up until the moment
when…(ha!), like we’d really spoil what’s
in store for you. All we can say is that it’s
awesome, and a mandatory Halloween
viewing. •
BOOkSTHEN: The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley
Jackson
Alongside Henry James’ The Turn of the
Screw, Shirley Jackson’s 1959 The Haunt-
ing of Hill House is a literary horror clas-
sic. Popular enough to be twice made
into a movie (1963 and 1999), nothing
replaces the slow, unfolding psychologi-
cal terror of reading Jackson’s original
masterpiece.
NOW: Breed by chase Novak
Chase Novak is the pseudonym for Na-
tional Book Award-winner Scott Spencer
(A Ship Made of Paper, Endless Love). It’s
clear why a name change was in order –
Breed is not for the faint of heart. Simply
put, a gruesome tale of fertility treat-
ment, Breed has already been praised
by the likes of Stephen King and is a
Halloween must.
It’s been said that music, like all art,
has the inherent ability to touch our
souls and speak to us on another level.
There’s something special about up and
coming indie/folk group Atlas and Arrows,
something surpassing their obvious talent:
They’re a sublime combination of the mu-
sician, the songwriter and the singer.
The group consists of five members:
Madison Sipes (vocals, guitar, banjo), Jett
Hagerty (violin, viola), Ryan Ladd (bass,
piano), Kayla Warner (vocals, percussion)
and Bryce Yaple (drums, vocals). When I
first heard the groups’ five-song debut EP,
Sunshine, I fell in love with their sound and
was impressed to learn the songs were
all written by the band. I was even more
impressed to discover that the voice I was
hearing belonged to 15-year-old Sipes,
the band’s primary songwriter. The group
formed in December of 2011, and with all
but one of the members still in high school,
it’s a tremendous achievement to already
have a demo CD, music videos, and a series
of performances under their belts. It might
seem daunting to juggle all of this with the
responsibilities high school demands, but
the group says “promoting to a wide body
of peers at various schools has helped get
the band up and running.”
Songwriting is a gift that comes natu-
rally to Sipes, who says she sometimes
gets inspired enough to knock out 30
songs in a day. “Music is what I love to do...
it is definitely my passion, and I think it is
the greatest thing to ever happen to me,”
she explains. “Last year I lost my dad to Ph

place. Instead of focusing
on the negatives in my life,
I began to focus all my
emotions into my music
and writing songs.” Sipes
seems to have mastered
the art of weaving broken-
ness into beauty.
Atlas and Arrows
strives to take their genre
of music to the next level,
and 16-year-old Hagerty
plays a big role in that. A
classically trained violin-
ist, Hagerty’s “dream is
to create an understand-
ing amongst people that
violin can do so much
more than just play con-
certos and sonatas.” He
proves his point well by
infusing the violin so el-
oquently into Atlas and
Arrow’s songs.
The band’s bassist, Ladd, graduated
from Union Mine High School this past
spring and recently headed off to Tennes-
see for college. “Over the years, music has
become not only my joy, but my job, and is
what I am pursuing in college.”
Without a doubt, this outstanding five-
fecta will be reaching new heights in the
near future, hopefully spreading their tal-
ent throughout Tennessee. In the mean-

isn’t filing the applications; rather, it’s
waiting for the admissions decisions.
“You might notice you and your stu-
dent are fighting way more than usual,”
McGuire explains. “This is normal. As
parents, we want to keep our babies
with us, while our seniors are seeing the
light at the end of the tunnel of child-
hood. It’s a transition. Be gentle with
each other.” •
3. AFTER APPLYING, CHECK YOUR EMAIL AND WRITE DOWN PASSWORDS!“It’s incredible how often I see really
bright, college-bound students who are
puzzled because they haven’t heard
back from a school to which they’ve
applied,” says Kara McGuire, head
counselor at Casa Roble High School
in Orangevale. “Nine times out of 10,
they aren’t checking their emails or Web
portals.” Fisher concurs. “Most (if not
all) communication from universities
will be through email.” Check it! And
while we’re on the subject of email, we
suggest using a simple, professional
email address. You’re applying to col-
lege; time to retire the cutesy one you
made back in fourth grade.
FOR PARENTS4. KEEP YOUR KID ORGANIZEDPutting deadlines on a family calendar
is helpful, as well as a special file folder
with all college-related paperwork.
Fisher says, “Thousands of students per
year have their applications withdrawn
from consideration for not meeting
deadlines, such as sending in their SAT/
ACT scores or their transcripts on time.”
Offenstein agrees. “I don’t know how
many times I called to have the receipt of
something confirmed. To think if I didn’t
follow-up and didn’t know I was missing
something – well, let’s not go there.”
5. PROVIDE EMOTIONAL SUPPORTThis might seem counter-intuitive. Isn’t
it YOU who needs support with the
empty-nest syndrome approaching?
Yes. But for now, the most stressful time
Essays, applications and dead-
lines, oh my! It’s October, which
means college application sea-
son is already underway. As the class of
2013 slugs through personal statement
essay revisions, while buried under a
mountain of SAT vocabulary flashcards,
we’d like to offer a few words to the wise.
We’ve consulted the experts and com-
piled a list of tips to help your family
navigate the often-murky waters of the
college admissions process, in hopes of
providing some stress-reduction along
the way.
FOR STUDENTS1. DON’T PROCRASTINATEThe California State University appli-
cation opened October 1, and the Uni-
versity of California online application
opens November 1. “Last year during
this time, I set alarms on my cell phone to
give myself a schedule of when I should
have certain parts of my application
done. That gave me enough time to
double-check all parts before submit-
ting my apps,” Joshua Offenstein, Sac-
ramento State freshman, says. Time
management is key. Start today.
2. APPLY BROADLYJoe Fisher, admissions and outreach
counselor at Sacramento State, says,
“I like to recommend students apply
to their dream school, an attainable
choice, and a fallback. You never know
how competitive a campus will be from
year to year.” If the $40-$65 price tag
per application is making you cringe,
check out porcelina.net/freeapps for
a list of U.S. colleges and universities
that don’t charge application fees under
certain circumstances.

tively, they work to assist clients with every conceivable service, including some
that patients may not even know they need.
A staff chaplain provides spiritual and emotional support, while two staff
nurses and a medical director provide consultative care to help clients understand
their treatment and pain management options, and assist them in better commu-
nicating with their doctors. There’s also a social worker to help with financial and
family concerns, including development of an advance directive for health care. As
a team, their purpose is to provide a measure of relief from the physical, emotional
and spiritual distress a serious illness creates. “Whenever someone receives a
potentially life-threatening diagnosis, they’re ready for our services,” Symons says.
“And we’re here for people of any age. Serious illness isn’t limited to the elderly.”
As a private and independent non-profit organization, Partners in Care isn’t
constrained by government regulations, but the tradeoff is that it isn’t subsidized
with public funds. The $350,000 annual budget is met with grants, private dona-
tions, a thrift store operation, and fundraising events like “Night at the Theater,”
to be held October 5. The event will feature entertainment, food and wine, and a
benefit auction.
“We can also use volunteers, but most of all, I really want people in our com-
munity to know this service is available now, and no one needs to wait until it’s
too difficult to manage care for themselves or a loved one before they get help,”
Symons says. “Help is here, and it’s only a phone call away.” •
For more information and to purchase tickets for ‘Night at the Theater,’ visit
partnersincareplacerville.org.
It’s a story many of us have only
seen in movies. Someone enters
the doctor’s office feeling fine, but
leaves with frightening news they have
a serious or even life-threatening dis-
ease. It makes for good drama in
Hollywood, but in real life words can’t
describe the impact of such a diagno-
sis. How do you tell your family? How
do you make decisions about your
health care? And if the worst happens,
how do you make sure your fam-
ily knows your wishes, and that their
needs are met?
Those were the questions a small
group of hospice and health care work-
ers sought to answer when they cre-
ated Partners in Care in 2001. “There
were no resources or services for peo-
ple who had to deal with a serious ill-
ness, but didn’t yet need hospice care,”
says Nancy Symons, M.Div., executive
director for Partners in Care. “Partners
in Care was created to fill that gap.
Our mission is to support the dignity
and choice of people walking the path
of serious illness and do all we can to
improve their quality of life.”
The program, which is provided
at no cost to the community, was
launched with a $500,000 grant from
the California Endowment. Today it
serves an average of 70 clients at any
given time – a big load for a highly
compassionate staff of five. Collec-

O’Donnell welcomed patrons to Placer-
ville’s first legitimate theater building. His
Empire Theater stood on the south side
of Main Street, adjacent to a hotel of the
same name. That night, a handsome New
York actor named Frank Chamfrau took
to the stage to play his famous role of
Mose, a two-fisted, big-hearted Bowery
fireman, clad in a plug hat and red shirt.
A renowned, close-knit clan of troup-
ers known as the Chapman family also
toured the Mother Lode and most likely
performed for Placerville’s miners.
Though considered to be superb Shake-
spearean actors, the Chapmans usually
chose to perform broad comedies and
exaggerated melodramas that attracted
larger audiences.
The Buchanan Theatrical Troupe, on
the other hand, presented Shakespeare
classics including Hamlet, The Merchant
of Venice, and Macbeth at the Placer The-
ater in 1856. Two years prior, the Empire
had burned, but in July of 1854, Bruce
Herrick fitted up his Olympic Hall in the
old Placer Hotel with a stage and scenery
to provide Placerville with a new the-
ater.
“Buck” Buchanan organized his small
company “to enlighten the central min-
ing regions of the state with illustration
of the drama, as it had never been seen
before, and as the hills declared ‘would
never be seen again.’” As the troupe rode
into Placerville and other mining towns
with its four-house team towing a 10-pas-
senger carriage, the animated Buchanan
would walk alongside it, thumping a large
drum.
On the evening of April 6, 1856, the cry
of “fire” emptied the Placer Theater. The
Buchanan troupe followed the crowd to
Sacramento Street where, still dressed
in their costumes, they pulled ropes, car-
ried buckets of water, and helped fight
the inferno wherever needed.
The Placer Theater continued to host
performances until its roof caught fire
in the July 6, 1856 fire. Charles Bonstel
completed restoration of the theater in
October and rented it to Darwin DeGolia.
DeGolia changed the name to Concert
Hall, where (according to the Mountain
Democrat of September 6 and 13, Octo-
ber 25, and November 29, 1856) he held
“monthly soirées.” •
sported their fair share of gambling
houses and saloons, they also furnished
venues – ranging from crude wooden
platforms to the trunks of felled trees
– where the miners’ own patched-to-
gether acting groups or traveling troupes
of professionals could perform simple
skits and multi-act plays. While the larger
audiences and fancier theaters of San
Francisco lured many acting troupes and
individual performers, most of the com-
panies took their shows inland to Sacra-
mento, Stockton and the larger mining
camps of the Mother Lode, including Old
Hangtown.
In the early spring of 1852, John
Hard on the heels of gold-rushing
49ers came the actors, many
toting trunks full of costumes
and scripts. They performed popular
melodramas and farces while aboard
ship or camped along the Overland Trail.
After reaching California, they found
audiences hungry for theatrical enter-
tainment, including the works of William
Shakespeare. “Theater was more than
entertainment for uprooted Easterners,”
writes Helene Wickham Koon in How
Shakespeare Won the West: Players and
Performers in America’s Gold Rush, 1849-
1865. “It was sustenance for the spirit.”

to come along. The joy of letting life un-
wind for a few days in an amazing place
with those who mean the most to you is
priceless, not to mention it becomes ad-
dicting. Now when we post pictures and
share our time with those back home, the
kids who used to go with us (and now are
grown) write on my Facebook wall and
tell me how much they miss going. They
share memories they have of their days
spent there, special memories from the
deposit of time – something you cannot
buy, only give away.
Do you have to go far? Does it have to
be a big deal? No. Begin doing activities
that require small investments of your
time in the lives of those who you’ve been
blessed with in your life. Max Lucado said:
“Those who sit around your table will soon
be sitting around tables of their own.”
It doesn’t have to be a vacation. It
doesn’t have to be expensive. It’s the
simple things you do together that rein-
force and protect this fragile and price-
less treasure called family. •

time going to this incredibly beautiful,
peaceful place; needless to say, it has be-
come a major highlight of our year.
There’s a special bond built when a
family spends time together. Does it mean
every year our kids were ecstatic to drive
eight hours to pitch a tent and sleep on
an air mattress for 10 days? Not exactly,
yet, every year we made memories sur-
rounding the little things that still make us
smile today: enjoyable meals, campfires,
walking through canyons, swimming in
rivers, jumping off rocks, finding agates,
battling raccoons, chili cook-offs, ocean
fishing, eating ice cream, lots of laughing,
games and stories. It’s amazing how little
it costs to build what we cannot buy with
anything else but our time.
Over the years, we’ve had the pleasure
of inviting other families from our church
In a world that’s become so fast-
paced with demand for instant
gratification, we can lose sight of
the need to slow down and spend qual-
ity time with those who are dear to us.
Building family traditions that bring
and keep us together are as important
today as they’ve ever been.
There’s nothing we can give to each
other that has more value than simply our
time and ourselves. Nineteen years ago,
my family began taking time out for a
family vacation. Our resources never per-
mitted luxurious excursions – just simple
camping trips where we could take time
away from all of life’s demands and spend
a few moments together as a family. We
explored several locations until we found
a very special place: Patrick’s Point State
Park in Trinidad. This year was our 16th

If you think the nine cities encompass-
ing the Palm Springs area would be
a great retirement destination, well,
you’d be right…and you’d also be wrong.
The year-round sunshine, relatively slower-
paced lifestyle and brutally hot summers
(luckily it’s a dry heat!) does make the
area – collectively known as the Coachella
Valley – an attractive destination for retir-
ing snowbirds. But since there’s no short-
age of misters, pools and air conditioning,
don’t let the heat keep you from a week-
end getaway. Now through May, when the
weather is spectacular, is the perfect time
of year to indulge in some of the fabulous
things to see and do – at a fraction of the
high-season rates.
EXPERIENCEThere are 112 golf courses, countless hik-
ing trails and excellent resorts, spas and
restaurants at your fingertips. One not-
to-miss event for tennis lovers is the BNP
Paribas Open – held every March in Indian
Wells and known in tennis circles as “the
fifth major,” as it gathers the world’s top
professional players. The Tennis Garden at
Indian Wells boasts the second largest ten-
nis stadium in the world and is surrounded
by beautifully landscaped grounds. In
March 2012, attendance topped 370,000
for the two-week combined ATP and WTP
event. Tickets are on sale now for the 2013
tournament, to be held March 4-17.
If tennis isn’t your thing, music may be.
Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival,
held every April, is the go-to music festi-
val. It’s like an annual Woodstock for the
millennial generation, but less muddy!
UNWINDIf your escape to the valley is about indul-
gence, then you’ll have no trouble finding
a spa to suit your needs. After a day on the
links or hardcore shopping in the El Paseo
Shopping District, try the Aqua Well mas-
sage at the Miramonte Resort & Spa in
Indian Wells, where you float weightlessly
in a pool heated to your body temperature
while your muscles are rhythmically mas-
saged; the unique treatment leaves you
relaxed and almost spiritually calm.
Another fantastic venue is La Quinta
Resort & Club, also in Indian Wells. This
Waldorf Astoria property, originally built
in 1926, covers 45 lushly manicured acres
at the foot of the Santa Rosa Mountains.
Golf, tennis, dining and a world-renowned
spa combine for one of the most luxurious
experiences available. The spa’s acclaimed Imag

HydraFacial is a new skin rejuvenation sys-

new level.
Even though Le Parker Méridien’s spa,
PSYC (Palm Springs Yacht Club) has no
body of water in which to dock your yacht,
PSYC believes in the country club experi-
ence, which – according to their Web site
– includes mixed doubles, a long steam
and a stiff cocktail. Difficult to argue oth-
erwise!
FEASTMost resorts offer several dining options,
but one not to miss is Tinto at The Saguaro
Palm Springs, a wine bar and restaurant
from Iron Chef Jose Garces, featuring a
modern take on tapas from Spain’s Basque
region. Fun, vibrant and delicious!
The entire valley offers so many op-
portunities that you have to go and expe-
rience it for yourself. Oh, and if you visit in
the winter, don’t forget to pack your skis…
seriously! •

by Jamila B. Khan
As the year draws to a close, we enter the months of holiday parties: a time of
warmth, joy and kinship for some, a time of forced, belabored social interac-
tion for others. Whichever perspective you take, Style’s compiled a list of
must-have accessories to help make your next gathering a hit – some may even turn
the toughest cynic into a bona fide party animal.
2. The Vertical Rabbit ® by Metrokane (in Candy
Apple Red), $59.99 at BevMo!, 2595 Iron Point Road,
Folsom. 916-817-2596, bevmo.com.

Goldsmith Gallery Fine Jewelers on Missouri Flat Road re-opened and was re-created two years ago. Kaye Irwin, the new owner, ensures that each customer is greeted with a warm welcome and that individual attention is given to each person. We knew it would be a challenge to start a jewelry store in this economy. We could not have done it without YOU, our customers and the exemplary work of our skilled goldsmith, Owen, and our customer service staff. One jewelry repair at a time and one fabulous custom design at a time, the experience and care about doing our very best for our customers must be showing and sets us apart. Is it Kaye spending hours with you and Grandma's jewelry box appraising each piece and finding the best use for the next generation, or Owen completing a challenging jewelry design or reconstruction, or Ada helping you find the perfect jewelry gift from our great selection in all price ranges? We invite you to visit our store and experience the diamonds, colored gems and pearls set in both classic and unique gold and silver designs. The estate department selection is especially captivating. Everybody says they love shopping and browsing at their leisure in our beautiful and spacious showroom. The Goldsmith Gallery Staff thanks you for voting us one of your favorite jewelry stores.

We are so fortunate to live and work in a county like El Dorado where people value small businesses and shopping local. Of course, we guarantee our prices with the big stores, plus most of our items are Made in America, too. For over 5000 items, 50+ brands go to www.affordablefurnitureandblinds.com. We’ve also diversified over the years and have added retractable patio awnings and we are an authorized Service Dealer for Hunter Douglas window coverings. We repair all makes and models of window coverings. Another brand new addition to our furniture and blinds family is our used furniture website. We use it for all of our trade-ins and great deals. But it’s also offered to anyone buying or selling household items, tools, vehicles and pretty much anything else (within reason). All locals selling to locals. Crystal Basin Bistro, a new eatery
in Camino, exudes rustic ambi-
ance that’s airy and laid-back
with whimsical artwork and metal sculp-
tures adorning the walls, including the
only 10-foot ladle in California.
Located next door to Crystal Basin
Cellars, the space was empty until its
transformation by the winery owners
a few months ago. Now it’s filled with
coolers of gourmet cheeses and lunch-
meats, shelves of crackers and picnic
items, and tables of unusual oils and
sauces. A wine bar is tucked under a
colorful canopy, and guests are welcome
to taste the special wines bottled for the
restaurant. A nice selection of ciders and
beers are available, too.
The bona-fide Bistro menu stars are
the “shareable plates” created by Chef
Lisa Scott. All plates are $6 and feature
unique flavor combinations. There are
about a dozen to choose from, plus a
soup and salad of the day. The Washing-

Although The Turlock – a grilled

The P’ville, a hearty plate of roasted beef
brisket served on Texas toast and topped
with Gorgonzola crumbles. Rounding
out the dish is a scoop of cheesy roasted
red pepper orzo.
Of all the plates we shared, The Hong

wasabi shrimp were served on a bed of
Asian slaw and fried wontons. Refresh-

For dessert we savored grilled

2011 MASON SAUVIGNON BLANCRandy Mason has been producing wine for more than 30 years (the first
Mason wine was produced in 1993) and is known in the industry as a pio-
neer for producing some of the best California Sauvignon Blancs on the
market. It was Mason’s vision to produce a high-quality wine and make it
available at a fair market price. The fruit for this year’s Sauvignon Blanc
came solely from a vineyard called Blockhouse – located in Yountville –
which in itself is special and unusual, since typically grapes for Sauvignon
Blancs at this price point (approximately $16 bottle) come from various
sources. The vineyard is located at the heart of the valley’s floor, which
enjoys cool evenings and warm days, making for excellent grapes.
2011 Mason Sauvignon Blanc embodies a very elegant style with
amazing flavors of grapefruit, melon and fresh-cut grass. Fermented in
100-percent stainless steel tanks, it has a very distinctive nose, and over-
all is a true Napa-style Sauvignon Blanc that’s heralded for its varietal
trueness and perfect balance. I like to enjoy this wine with an appetizer
before dinner; it even goes well with hummus! •— Richard Righton

Morocco: A Culinary Journey
with Recipes from the Spice-
Scented Markets of Marrakech to
the Date-Filled Oasis of Zagora
by Jeff Koehler
(Chronicle Books, 2012, $29.95)
Like Grilled Spicy Kefta Brochettes, these
are a favorite throughout Morocco, re-
ferred to as snacks in street stalls and in
simple cafes. They’re inexpensive, fla-
vorful and quick to prepare. The chicken
takes on a lovely golden hue from the
cumin and sweet paprika. Calculate
about four brochettes per person as part
of a meal, accompanied by a few salads
and plenty of bread.
2 heaping tbsp. finely chopped fresh •
cilantro
2 tsp. ground cumin•
1 tsp. sweet paprika•
1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper (optional)•
Salt and freshly ground black pepper•
6 tbsp. olive oil•
4 boneless chicken breasts (about 2 •
lb.) cut into 3/4-to 1-inch cubes
In a large mixing bowl, add the cilan-
tro, cumin, paprika and cayenne pep-
per. Generously season with salt and
pepper. Moisten with the oil and blend
well. Add the chicken and turn to coat.
Cover, refrigerate and marinate for
1 hour, turning occasionally.
Prepare skewers with 6-8
cubes of chicken on each. The
pieces should be just touch-
ing, not squashed tightly to-
gether.
If using a grill pan, skillet
or griddle, heat over medium-
high heat. If using a barbecue,
prepare a fire and heat until
the coals are glowing. If using a
broiler, preheat the broiler.
Cook the brochettes, nudg-
ing them from time to time with
the help of a spatula in order
to cook evenly on all sides, un-
til the meat is cooked through
and firm to touch, 4-5 minutes.
Serve hot. Makes about 16 bro-
chettes; serves 4. Co

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?
We are a friendly, community-oriented pet supply store. Now living in the Foothills, we
established our original family-owned pet supply business more than 26 years ago. We
recently found our one-of-a-kind “dream store,” which is on Green Valley Road, across from
the Purple Place. We stock a variety of high-quality premium pet foods, treats, toys, crates,
pens, collars, leashes, and now wild bird and patio décor specialties. We have never, nor will
we ever, sell animals. We are proud supporters of local pet rescue organizations. After two
start-up stints inside the corporate world, Dina and I knew that following our own hearts
made the best business sense for us. Selecting the pet supply business was just a natural
extension of who we were (and are): total pet lovers! After beginning small (via spe-
cialty dog and cat shows), we decided to take the scary brick and mortar plunge in
1987. Looking back, our timing wasn’t stellar as Dina was expecting our first child
and money was more than just a little stretched. Though we had many slow and
difficult days from the start, we felt fortunate for the wonderful number of affirm-
ing customers who stood by us. These customers and their pets are the driving
force behind our business success; they are also an integral inspiration for our Fol-
som/El Dorado Hills location.
How are you involved with both the community and your customer?
Togs for Dogs and Cats Too is perhaps the proudest of its extensive history of
community outreach. In addition to supporting numerous organizations – includ-
ing rescues, SPCA, public/private school, daycares, the arts and many more – we’re
especially blessed that we could step up to raise funds for a local infant born without
functioning kidneys. I will never forget what we, the boy’s family, our customers, and the
community at-large felt when almost one year later the boy was taken off dialysis and re-
ceived a life-saving kidney donation.
And finally, customer service is…?
Everything!

Dina and Eddie Alexander
Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?
Face in a Book exists for two reasons: for the love of books and for the love of
the community. We are a general bookstore with all new books; in addition, we
carry unique gift items, from travel accessories to journals and greeting cards.
I’d always wanted to own a small business in our community, where I would have
the opportunity to interact with people and offer them something special. While
lamenting over the closing of Borders with a friend last summer, I recall telling
her that bookstores were closing because people were spending too much time
on Facebook and that they should get their “face…IN a book!” The name…and
the idea stuck!
How are you involved with the both the community and the customer?
We are involved with the community in two ways. First, we carry items in the
store from local authors – including Cindy Sample, Amber Garza, Lori Mortensen
and others – and businesses. We also offer coffee and tea from local roasters
El Dorado Coffee and Tea. Secondly, we are partnering with local community
groups Hands for Hope and Run for Courage to carry their hats and T-shirts. Customers
are the heartbeat of our store! We will do whatever we can to find just the right book for
people. If we don’t carry something, we have the ability to order nearly 9 million titles,
and there is no charge for shipping items to the store.
What’s your favorite childhood memory?
Other kids had a favorite toy…I had books! A favorite memory is reading Nancy Drew
books while lying on my stomach in my father’s Ford pickup truck when it was winter.
Outside it was freezing, but with the windows rolled up and the sunlight pouring in I
was 100-percent cozy. You can never go wrong with a comfy seat and good book!

And pounding of paws,
Jangled the stars hung in the night.
Then suddenly they grew quite quiet
And held still, not twitching a tail.
A loud knock on their door –
Then three knocks once more.
Was it a monster hunter, hot on their
trail?
No, it was something considerably less
scary.
To them, anyway – but not you or me.
Because every grown monster
Once was a youngster,
And these two were still little, you see.
The ruckus they made was disturbing
Their parents one floor below;
With the thuds and the laughing,
And the booms and the cackling,
It was ruining Dad’s favorite TV show.
Two monsters one night were talk-
ing
About the scariest way to scare,
How to fright and strike fear
In anyone near,
And cause people to leap from their
chairs.
“I like to start with a sneer,” said one.
Said the other, “I like to start with a
scowl.”
“I whip out my claws.”
“I snap with my jaws.”
And they agreed one always should
growl.
One monster stood up on his hind legs,
To show how he towered overhead.
Broad-shouldered and tall,
Green scales and all,
He was good at bringing the dread.
The other lurched forward on all fours,
And swatted the air with his tail.
Then he reared back and bellowed,
And spit something yellow,
That smelled putrid and rancid and stale.
The first beast then flicked out his long
tongue;
Like a towel it snapped through the
room.
Disgusting and slimy,
And a little bit grimy,
It left the walls all covered in goo.
The second narrowed his one eye,
Which sat like a jewel on his forehead.
Then focusing in,
That horrible lens
Shot lightning that blew up a bed.
While the smoke cleared away they cack-
led,
And rolled on the floor with delight.
Their throaty guffaws

monster mash A Spooktacular Poem
by Tom Mailey
“The Uncensored Message that My Wife Asked Me Not to Write…”
Dear friend, Well, at first, my wife asked me not to write this. We had a big discussion about it. Finally, she understood what I was trying to do, and actually helped me write this letter to you. Here’s the thing. In my office, most of the people that come in to see me tell me they’ve “tried everything.” They’ve had “every” test, wound up with huge medical bills, and are still no better off. Often, they’ve been subjected to medications that have only served to temporarily mask symptoms. That’s not what most people are looking for. Health, or the lack of it, very often has simple causes, and very reasonable corrections. That’s what I’m going to tell you about. But, before I tell you more, let me tell you something about me… At the time, I’m about to become a brand new father. For nine months my wife and I are excited and a bit nervous to meet our unborn daughter. Then it happens, my wife is having complications so the doctor induces her one month early. The labor is exhausting and the cord is wrapped around my daughter’s neck. With no time to spare, the doctor delivers our baby by way of forceps. Our newborn is lifeless when we first meet her, and my wife is physically, mentally, and emotionally spent. After a week in the intensive care unit my daughter, Aislyn, is well enough to go home. Sadly, my wife is not doing well. She has limited use of both of her legs and is checked out of the hospital with a walker. Our lives become a challenge as she cannot carry our baby from room to room, and I am away most of the day. The doctor’s at the hospital are perplexed so they refer us to a neurologist. We left with a grim prognosis that she
might never regain feeling again in her left leg. A friend of mine convinces me to give his doctor a try. This new doctor does an exam takes some films, and then ‘adjusts’ my wife’s spine (he tells us there is compression in her body creating pressure on the nerves that are affecting her legs.) The adjustment is very gentle, and post exams and films are taken to assure the adjustment is successful.
On the way home from our visit my wife states that she felt tingling in her legs! Oh, did I mention that this doctor is a chiropractor? Within a few short months, she has full use of both legs. I’m so impressed with the results, and the other ‘miracles’ that are shared with us at his office, that I eventually went to chiropractic school myself. And that’s how it happened! Back to what my wife (at first) didn’t want me to write. It’s that chiropractic is one of the biggest “secrets” in health care. Few people (relatively, only 10% have been to a chiropractor) know about it. And many of the rest could be helped if they only knew the true story. My wife could have been confined to a walker or possibly a wheelchair had we not been encouraged to seek chiropractic care. So, I often feel like shouting it from the mountaintop! Is that “professional?” Well, maybe it is, or maybe not. But, I’ve decided people should know.
Many of my patients travel well over an hour each way to see me for various problems like:
Headaches Migraines Chronic pain Neck pain Shoulder/arm pain Whiplash from car
accidents Backaches Numbness in limbs Athletic injuries Just to name a few… Here’s what some of my patients had to say: After my first adjustment, it was like the floodgates were open. . I have been twisted up for over 20 years and for the first time I am moving in the right direction. -Sam W
Dr. Hassey’s technique proves I didn’t have to be in pain for the rest of my life. I was able to get back to the active life I enjoy. -Toni S. As amazing as this may sound, I have been symptom free since my first visit! -Greg G. After many years of major shoulder pain, I saw Dr. Hassey and after a few corrections the constant pain was gone. -Tod J I have more stamina, am less stressed and I have increased energy. - Tantra M. Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. The truth is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. Of course, all people respond
differently to care, but we get terrific results. It’s that simple! Exciting Offer-Look, I know you’re smart. You want to get to the cause of your problem, and not just cover it up with drugs. When you are one of the first 20 people to call and schedule a new patient exam (by September 28, 2012) you’ll receive that entire exam for $37. That includes x-rays, a computerized postural analysis and a detailed report of findings. The whole ball of wax, and, there are no hidden fees. But, call right away because we expect to be flooded with calls as this exam normally costs $275. Again, there’s only 20 of these slots, so don’t miss out and call today (by law, this offer excludes Medicare/Medicaid recipients.) Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a Summa Cum Laude graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I just have that low exam fee to help more people who need care. My assistant is Katie and she is a really great person. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called NUCALI SPINAL CARE and it’s at 1200 Suncast Lane, El Dorado Hills, CA. Our phone number is 916-626-4300. Call Katie today for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you and God bless.
-Matthew Hassey, D.C. P.S. When accompanied by the first, I am also offering the second family member this same examination for only $10.

So their momma came stomping up-
stairs.
It was she who rapped with such clout:
“KNOCK IT OFF!” she bellowed.
And to make them more mellow,
She threatened them with a time-out.
Well, that was enough for our two little
beasts,
Who sat smiling at the damage they’d
caused:
Goo on the door,
A shattered bed on the floor,
Pillows destroyed by their claws.
And they both knew they needed a
broom
Or maybe two; there was so much to
sweep.
But such destruction is tiring
To a small monster’s wiring,
So instead...
They fell fast asleep. •
