INTRODUCTION
This booklet contains a general description of all the subjects that are being
offered at Malick Secondary School, at the CSEC and CVQ levels. They have
been arranged under eight departments. The Head of each department has
been included should it be necessary to make further enquiries.
Helpful hints have also been included along with possible subject combinations
and some career choices.
TIPS FROM OUR GUIDANCE OFFICER
WHY CHOOSE SUBJECTS?
• The subjects done at school often determine the type of careers you follow
• Doing subjects you like and are good at makes life at school enjoyable
• You are more likely to do well in a subject that you enjoy doing
HOW TO DECIDE?
Recognise that this is an important decision & ask yourself the following
questions
• What subjects are available?
• What subjects interest me?
• What subjects am I good at?
• What subjects do I need for further study?
DO NOT CHOOSE A SUBJECT BECAUSE
➢ Your friends are taking it
➢ Your favourite teacher is teaching it
➢ You’ve heard it is an easy subject.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SOCIAL STUDIES
People who teach Social Studies courses combine information from numerous
disciplines with the single aim of teaching students more about the society
within which they live.
Students are taught to demonstrate skills of analysis as
they analyse data, compare and contrast cultural values
and familiarize themselves with pressing global issues.
Thus studying Social Studies challenges or broadens the
students’ vision of the world.
Social Studies is an expansive field of study that unites
major concepts of various disciplines including
Anthropology, Economics and Geography.
CONTRAST
A benefit of learning Social Studies is an increased awareness of geographical
concepts. Maps and globes are tools that can be used so the student becomes
acquainted with locations where significant events occurred.
PERSPECTIVE
Social Studies empowers students to become skilled negotiators in a global
economy. Since it exposes them to ideas and attitudes that are crucial
components of divergent culture, Social Studies teachers encourage students
to develop an increased sense of political acumen.
NORMS
Studying Social Studies permits students to develop an awareness of a wide
variety of social issues and encourages them to consider different ways of
addressing these issues.
Social Studies nurtures an awareness within students about the relevance of
social issues on their lives.
