NCEA is the “National Certificate of Educational Achievement”. CreditsWhere achievement used to be measured in percentages and grades, now the measure has changed to “Credits”. Credits are gained by “passing” standards. There are three kinds of standards:Unit StandardsThey are internal, in-school tests which are against a national standard.Internal Achievement StandardsThey are internal, in-school tests which are against a national standard. Similar to Unit Standards but with the added possibility of Merit and Excellence. (See below)External Achievement StandardsThey are external tests which are against a national standard. They are short examinations and have the added possibility of Merit and Excellence. Apart from Credits, Achievement Standards also have a reward system built in. Students can be awarded an “Achieve” or a “Merit” or “Excellence”. While it makes no difference to the number of credits earned, Achieve, Merit and Excellence denote how well students have done in terms of ability.Every subject is assessed by a set of Unit Standards or Achievement Standards or both. Most subjects have 24 credits in total but this varies with the assessment method and the level.

NCEA Level One

Level One at NCEA is gained by getting 80 credits. This must include the Literacy & Numeracy components; 10 English credits and 10 Mathematics credits or 8 Te Reo credits or possibly 10 Pangarau credits. Gaining NCEA Level One opens the door to following an academic Year 12 Course if you wish to do so.

The school’s prerequisite for Year 12 is 60 credits including Literacy and Numeracy. Students will continue to be Year 11 until they reach this standard. This includes not being allowed to wear the blue uniform.

Year ElevenYou have core subjects: Religious Studies, English, Mathematics, Science and three option subjects.

Page 5: SUBJECT - c1940652.r52.cf0.rackcdn.comc1940652.r52.cf0.rackcdn.com/54da5dfdb8d39a7e6a002…  · Web viewCullinane College . Option Choices 2013-2014. Knowing which subjects to take

NCEA Level Two

At the end of Year 12 students need 80 credits to gain NCEA Level Two. This time they need 60 credits from Level 2( or higher) and they can use 20 credits from Level One.

The school’s prerequisite for Year 13 is 40 credits at Level 2 and NCEA Level 1. Students will continue to be Year 12 until they reach this standard.

Whether or not you have gained NCEA Level 1 or Level 2 you should check the prerequisites for each subject. If you still don’t satisfy the conditions, go and talk to the Subject teacher or Head of Department. Also talk to the Careers Advisor. This is about finding the best school course for you.

Year TwelveYou are expected to follow a full course occupying all options. Religious Studies and English are compulsory.Students will need to choose 5 other full year options Year ThirteenYou are expected to follow 6 subjects and Religious Studies at Level 3

Page 6: SUBJECT - c1940652.r52.cf0.rackcdn.comc1940652.r52.cf0.rackcdn.com/54da5dfdb8d39a7e6a002…  · Web viewCullinane College . Option Choices 2013-2014. Knowing which subjects to take

Semester Courses

We are also offering limited semester courses at Year 12/13 level. These are courses that only last a half year. This is to introduce more flexibility into the Year 12/13 curriculum. Courses change around at approximately 17 weeks so they are of equal length. Subjects that have external standards must be in the second half, Semester 2. If you choose a semester subject you must have another one for it to pair with. So semester subjects come in pairs; you choose one from semester one and one from semester two.

Correspondence SchoolCorrespondence courses can be used to fill the gap. However this is the hardest possible road. Students have to be in charge of their own learning, responsible, mature, and self-directed. Correspondence courses are a last resort when all else has failed.

University Entrance

Entrance to a New Zealand University is achieved by gaining NCEA Level 3 (60 credits at Level Three or above and 20 at Level Two or above). At least 42 of these credits must come from three subjects in the approved Level Three list. You will also need 10 Level Two credits to show Literacy in either English or Te Reo Mäori: 5 credits must be in writing and 5 credits must be in reading.Numeracy for U.E must include 10 credits from Level One Mathematics or higher.A reasonable range of subjects would be five at Level Three.Note: Some universities now have more stringent entry requirements. Check with your teacher or careers counsellor at the start of the year.
