Comparing 20th and 21st Century Non-Fiction Texts

Students study a range of 20th- and 21st-century non-fiction texts -including literary non-fiction- and develop skills to analyse, evaluate and compare non-fiction extracts. The skills they practise in this unit are assessed at GCSE in the English Language exam (Paper 2a).

1. Collect a range of texts from newspapers to leaflets to travel brochures. Identify the audience and purpose of each and consider how language is used in each.

Unit 1 (D) Black and white illustration

Students will: • Develop observational recording skills using a wide variety of

techniques and materials. • Produce a sketchbook which includes; exploring mono tone mark

making, researching and responding to artists who work in black & white techniques and trialling experimental development.

• Design and create an abstract composition based on their sketchbook work.


Students can also select from the following activities to support the Black & white unit of work:

1. Explore the illustrations of David Bray, Ralph Steadman and the graphic comic art of the Sin City.

2. Select a range of inspiring images, write down how the images inspire you and then draw your version on the images.

GCSE APPLIED BUSINESS

Controlled Assessment Part 1

Students will complete the first part of their controlled assessment where they compare Barratt Developments Plc to a small local business of their choosing. They will compare they businesses against the following criteria:

● Business Activity ● Business Purpose


● Business Aims and Objectives ● Competition ● Ethics.

This is worth 20% of their overall Applied GCSE.


The controlled assessment is a research based project where students must compare a local and a national business. The national business (Barratt Developments Plc) has been provided for them. Students need to ensure they have carried out all the necessary research and planning into their local business.

Production

Students will learn about the different types of production and how businesses ensure that the quality of their products is high. They will investigate how businesses add value to their products and how technology impacts what is made. Students will then learn about the links between production and staffing whilst comparing Eastern and Western approaches to production. Finally, students will investigate methods of increasing efficiency and how businesses benefit from economies of scale when they grow.

Passive amplifier Project

Meat, fish, poultry and eggs

Students will focus their theory and practical tasks on protein foods such as fish and meat, to understand the relationship between diet and health. To be able to apply and demonstrate an understanding of handling, storing and cooking meat and fish to prevent food poisoning. Some practical outcomes will be chicken goujons, fish pie and burgers


Research the 4 types of fresh fish cuts, naming suitable fish for each type. Explain how to prepare each cut.

Customs and Festivals

Students will be learning to understand, discuss and write about customs and festivals which are important to France and other French speaking countries. They will also discuss some current affairs in French to help them become more aware of the world around them, and to spontaneously express their views in the target language. By now students should be using at least 4 tenses in spoken and written French with varying degrees of competency.


1. Use the internet to search for customs and festivals in France. Write 10 sentences about them in French. Use 4 tenses.

Componant 1: Devising coursework 40% of qualification

Pupils to continue to develop their devised piece of theatre including practitioner techniques. Whilst creating a portfolio of the creative process. Pupils will take part in workshops based around several practitioners:

They will then apply these techniques and skills to allow them to develop their piece further. Allowing them to finalise the piece through rehearsal. Pupils will then be formally assessed towards the end of spring term or beginning of the summer term.

To gain an understanding of the characteristics, processes, application and advantages/ disadvantages of ICT in the design, development, marketing and sales of textiles products. Students will apply this knowledge and understanding to design a t-shirt/ sweatshirt for a local company ‘Rusks to Rebels’. To gain an understanding of environmental issues and the impact it has on the fashion industry. Students will research, design and manufacture a decorative textile accessory using recycled materials.
