I pledge my head

to clearer thinking,my heart

to greater loyalty,my hands

to larger service, and my health to better living,

for my club, my community, my country and

my world.

The calendar last month told us it was spring, but today isn’t looking a whole lot like it. I hope you all got a

chance to get away and do something fun or just relax over spring break. I sure enjoyed some much needed sunshine and family time. Now, its back to business and getting ready for another spring and summer full speed ahead.

I’ve been getting to visit some club and project meetings and its been fun to see the volunteers and kids in action. I just like to remind everyone this time of year, that it is our job to help you succeed in leading or participating in your club. So, please don’t be afraid to ask us for help and to provide us any ideas you have on ways we can make your experience better.

This month we have a couple great opportunities to build life skills. We will be hosting our county presentation day on Friday April 13th at the town hall in Marbleton. This is always a great chance for youth to practice public speaking skills. I wish I had a quarter for every time someone tells me that they can tell a youth who has been in the 4-H program, because they have great public speaking skills. Details of the contest are inside, but don’t be afraid to call

us with questions. We hope to see many of you there.

Also this month, I am taking junior leaders that are interested to the statewide 4-H camp counselor training in Douglas. This training is packed with great educational opportunities to help our junior leaders excel at utilizing their leadership skills at 4-H camps. We are excited to offer this new opportunity and look forward to seeing what the attendees do with the knowledge they gain during the camp.

Finally, this month will be our 9th annual youth business venture contest. Details are inside, but what I would like you to know is that over the past 8 years, this contest has helped fund over 25 youth businesses in our community. When we think about life skill development, this one program encompasses nearly every life skill imaginable. Youth have to develop a business plan, present the plan to a committee and then if award funds, get to start the process of owning their own business. There is so much learning involved in this program, it has clearly become one of my favorites over the years. We hope to see some fun new ideas come our way again this year.

Stay warm everyone and hang onto your hats. Its spring in Wyoming!

We “learn by doing”. Two out of ten people remember what they hear, but seven out of ten people remember what they see and hear!

Have you ever shown a friend how to tie a knot, take a picture, or set a table? If you did, you gave a presentation. Easy, wasn’t it?

How did you do it? While you were using your hands to show your friend how to do something, you were also telling her or him how to do it. It was easy for you because you knew how.

Giving a presentation will help you to think on your feet and learn to speak before a group. You will have fun showing others how to do something. Check our website for a help sheet.

ChOOSING A TOPICa) something you have learned to do in 4-H Club workb) something you can do well, something you like to do, and

something that you can show others how to do in a few minutes

c) something you think others would like to know how to dod) an interesting title for your presentation.

• Limit your presentation to one process, or main idea, as much as possible.

• Learn all the facts you can about the subject chosen; do your research.

• Be sure to dress appropriately for what you are presenting• Be sure to use safe and recommended procedures.• Know yourself—mannerisms you have that could interfere.

PLANNING Introduction—Body—Summary

INTRODUCTION• Greet your audience. Someone else should introduce you.• Have a catchy title, create interest.• Tell what you are going to demonstrate and why they should want

to learn about your topic.• Tell how you became interested in your topic.

BODY OF PrESEnTATIOn—In planning the presentation:• List the steps to be shown in the order in which you will show them

and decide how you are going to do each step. Use your time efficiently.

• List the supplies that you need for your presentation. Plan an arrangement for their efficient use. Example: trays

• Decide what you are going to say to your audience as you do each step.

• If you have visuals, use them appropriately. Possibly use a mirror.• Be sure your audience can clearly see what you are doing.• Look at your audience and stand straight as you talk to them. Get

their attention by being friendly and by being enthusiastic about your topic.

• Speak clearly and be sure everyone can hear you.

SUMMArY• Show the results of your presentation to the audience.• Restate or briefly repeat the main points.• Give sources of information, if you have not given them in the

presentation.• Give the audience ample opportunity to ask questions, repeat

questions before answering them.• Give out materials you would like the group to have. Possibly

directions, recipes, or samples

GIVInG YOUr PrESEnTATIOnPractice the presentation. Keep in mind the following points:• Look at your audience and stand straight as you talk to them. Get

their attention by being friendly and by being enthusiastic about your topic.

• Speak clearly and be sure everyone can hear you.• Be neat and dress properly for the job you are going to do.• Arrange the work area so the audience can see what you are

doing at all times.• If you use models or charts, be sure everyone in the audience can

see and read them. Use creativity in phrases and use color.• Avoid unnatural long pauses. Avoid talking over noisy equipment.

Watch time limits.• Power point presentations should be rehearsed well enough to be

able to work without the media presentation if equipment doesn’t work. Speak to the audience not the screen. Be sure that slides can be easily read from a distance.

• Show the finished product to your audience.• Smile and be yourself. It is more important how you feel about

yourself and how you did than the color of ribbon you receive.

Character CountsWhat is respect?

Respect is very important in our relationships with others. When we respect others, we treat them with consideration and courtesy both verbally and physically. Respect for others should always be demonstrated and characterizes how we live our lives. It is a very important quality that will enable you to relate to and work well with others. Follow the Golden Rule; treat others the way that you would want them to treat you. Good manners matter and respect is demonstrated when consideration and kindness is shown to others. Respect is very important to a person of character.

treat other people the way you want to be treated.• Tell the truth

• Be courteous and polite.

• Listen to what other people have to say.

• Don’t insult people, or make fun of them, or call them names.

• Don’t bully or pick on others.

• Don’t judge people before you get to know them.

RESPECT

“Show respect even topeople who don’t deserveit; not as a reflection oftheir character, but as a

reflection of yours.”—Dave Willis

Check for respect 4-HThe laughs gained with playing this game with your club can add some

fun and give your club members the judgment to understand that the humor can be funny to listen to, but not funny if it is acted out. Some examples include:

You feel a sneeze coming, so you

a) look for someone to sneeze on

b) cover your mouth and nose with your hands

c) turn your head away from people and let the sneeze out as loudly as possible.

Company is over. And you notice that after the meal, your mom has a big piece of lettuce on her tooth. You

a) point at it and start laughing as loud as you can,

b) ask if anyone can tell which of your mom’s teeth is not like the other,

c) quietly whisper in your mom’s ear that she should check her teeth in the bathroom.

Once your 4-Her’s understand the idea behind making up scenarios for the game, they will want to make up some of their own, too.

Now, when club members treat each other or possessions with respect, remember to say, “Check for respect.”

Springtime on the South slopesI know it doesn’t feel that much like spring yet, but my calendar says youth baseball starts in just a

few weeks. It’s interesting that how “springy” things look can be drastically different just a few feet removed from a snow drift. There are several related factors that affect new spring plant growth.

For the most part, when soil temperature, light, and soil moisture reach threshold levels, new plant growth begins. This phenomenon can take place weeks apart on north and south facing slopes. Southerly aspects warm with the daytime sun and can be well on their way to wildflower blooms before north facing hills shed their snow. Direct sunlight has significant melting effects aside from simply raising the ambient air temperature. Shortwave radiation speeds up the heating process, warming soils and triggering plant bud growth.

Another factor that affects when south slopes sprout is the orientation of the landscape. If there is a mountain or ridge opposite the south facing hill, it will block early morning sunlight from reaching the face until later in the day. Alternatively, direct sun exposure for the whole day will lead to more rapid warming.

Would the patterns noted above be the same or different in South America? Either way, if you need a homemade snow cone on a warm hike in May, now you have a good idea where to look!
