August 2016 Newsletter View this email in your browser 60th Annual Richards Free Library Festival and Book Sale Join us on August 27, 2016 for this eagerly awaited annual event! The Book Sale opens at 9:00 AM and runs until 3:00 PM, but if you are a Friend of the Library, early admission starts at 8:00 AM. Anyone can become a Friend that morning for just $5.00, so be sure to arrive early. This year we have a “new” table of military books, a ton of children’s and teen books, many cookbooks, sports books, and novels, novels, novels! The special feature of this year’s Festival is a Dollhouse Raffle. This magnificent dollhouse can be seen on our website under the calendar Have you seen our "new" sign on the front lawn? Our old sign was picked up and turned around by two of our library trustees so you can now see it coming and going on North Main Street. Paint 'n Place of Newport added the lettering on the sign, and some of the International Workcampers helped replant the gardens. It looks great! entry for the Festival. Tickets are $1.00 each or 6tickets for $5.00.

The Cookie Walk (always a sell out!) featuresselections from the exotic to the expected, and adelicious Luncheon on the Library Porch isoffered by our Library Trustees. And be sure tobring the kids for a day of fun at our ever­popular Children’s Tent, which has new andexciting activities each year!

Kindle Fire

We have a new Kindle Fire available for loan fromthe library pre­loaded with several books.  Youraccount needs to be in good standing (no fines oroverdue materials) and you need to be at least 18years old in order to borrow the Kindle which canbe checked out for two weeks.

Summer Reading 2016

The 2016 “On your Mark, Get Set… Read!”Summer Reading Program wraps up this week withthe Ice Cream Social Finale on August 4 at 3:00!

It has been a wonderful summer full of reading.The walls of the children’s area are filling up with“megaphones” representing each half hour the

children have read. We’re running out of space toput them! So far participating children under 12have completed 51 charts—that’s over 500 hoursof reading! This doesn’t include dozens of chartsthat are still partially finished or waiting to bebrought in. Way to go, kids!

Congratulations also to our five teen participantswho have finished 12 cards between them, totallyanother 120 hours of reading!

Our readers have enjoyed 14 fun programs so farhere at the library, including a stuffed animalsleepover, a karate demonstration, tie dying, theFrozen T­Shirt Contest, and a traditional circledance.  Look for photos coming soon on ourwebsite!

All of this is possible because of the wonderfulsupport we receive here in Newport from theFriends of the Library, the Rotary Club, the “Kids,Books, and the Arts” grant, Grazi’s Market, CoronisMarket, and KJ’s Café. Thank you! And anothergreat big thank you goes out to all our volunteersand helpers that made this summer readingprogram a success this season, including KyoshiBrent Baker and the kids from Rising Sun MartialArts, Reuben Joshua Relente, and all thevolunteers with the International Work Camp.

Join us for a morning of Adult Coloring on Tuesday,August 16, from 10:30 to 11:30.  We'll supply thecoloring pages, crayons, markers and more in arelaxing atmosphere. We'll go back to our regularevening schedule in September.
