  • SG-5TM / 5XPTM Wellhead Systems

    1-1

The ABB Vetco Gray SG-5/SG-5XP is the most widelyused subsea wellhead system in the world today. Thecomplete SG-5 system includes guidance equipment, high-pressure wellhead housing, casing hangers, bore protectors, and running, retrieving, and testing tools.

An SG-5 wellhead system supports the casing stringsinside the subsea wellhead. The high-pressure metal-to-metal SG-LTR packoff seals between the casing hangerand the wellhead housing to isolate the casing bore fromthe annulus for well control. The ABB Vetco Gray H-4hydraulic wellhead connector latches to the mandrel profileon the SG-5 high-pressure wellhead housing. The H-4connector acts as the foundation for the BOP stackthroughout the drilling operations.

A value-conscious operator in todays competitive marketappreciates the many advantages and the reliability of theSG-5 subsea well system:

v Working pressure up to 10,000 psi in combinationwith high casing loadsv Simple tools and procedures inherent in a

torque-set system provide maximum reliabilityand serviceabilityv Minimum number of running, retrieving, and

testing toolsv Field-proven single trip system

Run and land casing hanger, energize, andtest annulus seal all in one tripv Metal-to-metal casing annulus sealsv Casing program flexibilityv Optional full bore casing hanger running toolsv Test with wear bushings in placev All SG-5 casing hangers have the same

external dimensions Will land in any of the three hanger profiles No costly hanger adapters neededv Use one packoff -- the SG-LTR -- throughout

the system Metal-to-metal seal Reliable Retrievablev Field-proven with more SG casing hangers

and packoffs installed worldwide than all othersystems combinedv Clear passage for cuttings and mud while running

the hanger, circulating, and cementing Deep, wide slots for increased flowby in the

casing hanger and packoff nutv Qualified to API 17D requirements

Although the SG-5 is an established and field-provensubsea wellhead system, ABB Vetco Gray continues anongoing program of system refinements. Using field datafrom worldwide offshore operations, SG-5 componentsundergo testing, analyzing, and improving to enhance theirreliability and value to our customers.

    1-3

The SG-5XP is a 4-casing hanger system. It has all thestandard SG-5 system features plus the added ability tosupport the additional casing hanger and seal within thehigh-pressure wellhead housing.

The SG-5XP uses a load ring on the 13-3/8" casing hangerto divert casing and test pressure loads directly into thehigh-pressure wellhead housing instead of the 16" casinghanger. When the 16" casing hanger is not used, anadapter attaches to the bottom of the 13-3/8" casinghanger and is run with the hanger in a single trip.

v Positive landing shoulder in the wellhead housing forthe 16" hangerv Protected seal area for 16" packoffv Run, cement, and test the 16" hanger and packoff

in a single tripv Uses standard SG-5 tools with the addition of

the 16" casing hanger running tool, and 4-hangertest plug

Prepare the Casing Hanger and Packoff for Installation

Prior to running the next casing string, assemble the casinghanger, universal casing hanger running tool, and thepackoff along with the subsea-released cementing plugs.1. Place the casing hanger in a vertical position, and

rotate the packoff onto the casing hanger until thepackoff stops. (Remove the lock ring if the hangerwill not be locked down.)

    2. Back the packoff off until the bottom of the packoffis 2-5/8" from the packoff landing shoulder on thecasing hanger. This space is known as the initialstandoff.

    3. Make up the subsea cementing plugs to theuniversal casing hanger running tool.

    4. Stab the casing hanger running tool into the casinghanger, aligning the tool torque keys with the milledslots on the packoff.NOTE: Measure from the bottom of the centralizersleeve to the packoff landing shoulder and recordthe dimension. After make up, check this dimen-sion. With full tool/hanger engagement, thisdimension should be 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 less.

    5. Make up with chain tongs until snug (approximately3 to 4 turns to the left).NOTE: As the tool makes up with the casinghanger, it simultaneously backs off the packoff, withthe ideal final standoff being 4-1/8" to 4-1/4". Thismeasurement is critical to assure sufficient flowbyduring circulating and cementing operations.

    6. Install a protector on the packoff and set theassembly aside.

The SG-5/5XP wellhead system is easily adapted for usewith a fixed platform or TLP tieback completion system. Byusing the SG-5/5XP 9-5/8" tieback hanger, the productionstrings can be tied back to the platform. The standard ABBVetco Gray tieback system locks and seals the 20",13-3/8", and 9-5/8" casing strings into the SG-5/5XPwellhead system. The 9-5/8" production string has a fullmetal-to-metal seal. The initial tieback riser lands on theSG-5/5XP wellhead, makes up without rotation while thefunnel adapter of the tieback system accommodates angular

misalignment and lateral offset. The wellhead equipmentused for tieback systems is standard, except for the lastcasing hanger installed. This casing hanger contains aninternal profile for the SG seal preparation and specialtieback threads. The last casing string is threaded into thecasing hanger by the internal lockdown sub on the adapter,so the casing strings are not rotated. A modified wearbushing on threaded insert protects the sealing and lockingareas.
