SUBSTANCE ABUSE PSYCHO-EDUCATION AND TREATMENT

Addiction as a major health problem which demands effective treatments of substance use disorders. Group therapy works well because it engages therapeutic forces—like affiliation, support, and peer confrontation—and these properties enable clients to bond with a culture of recovery. Another advantage of group modalities is their effectiveness in treating problems that accompany addiction, such as depression, isolation, and shame.

Groups can support individual members in times of pain and trouble, and they can help people grow in ways that are healthy and creative. Formal therapy groups can be a compelling source of persuasion, stabilization, and support. Group therapy can provide a wide range of therapeutic services, comparable in efficacy to those delivered in individual therapy.

The Alcohol and Drug Education Program(ASAM Level 0.5)

· Intake/Screening – Conducted when an individual has been evaluated at a non-RTR facility

and has selected RTR to follow through with ASAM Level 0.5 recommendations. RTR will have the patient sign all proper releases to have the Substance Abuse Clinical Evaluation forwarded to the appropriate RTR facility.

· Clinical Assessment – Conducted to determine the presence of a Substance Abuse problem and if positive, the appropriateness of an ASAM Level 0.5 program

· Psycho-educational Model - Psycho educational groups are designed to educate clients about substance abuse, and related behaviors and consequences. This type of group presents structured, group-specific content, often taught using videotapes, audiocassette, or lectures.

· Group Sessions – The program consists of a minimum of 12 Week / 1.5 Hour consecutive weekly groups which 5 minutes tolerance for non-chronic lateness. There are a maximum of two absences allowed during the length of the program. Groups are provided on weeknights and weekends – (Sunday groups in English in Lawrenceville and in Spanish in Forest Park)

Support Groups – The program encourages Support Groups (Alcoholics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous) since participation in such groups on a voluntary basis serve as an educational experience in the

· long term consequences of substance dependence; however, the participants are not mandated to attend Support Groups at this level of education.

· Random Drug Screens – There is random alcohol and drug testing while in the program. A baseline Drug Screen is collected within in first 2 weeks and a positive drug screen may be reason for referral to a substance abuse treatment program in lieu of an educational base program.

The Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment Program(ASAM Level I)

· Intake/Screening – Conducted when an individual has been evaluated at a non-RTR facility and has selected RTR to follow through with ASAM Level I recommendations. ASAM Level I substance abuse treatment ranges from 3 hours per week, on a weekly basis, once per week for a duration of 17 weeks up to 9 hours per week three times per week, on a weekly basis, for duration of 52 weeks. RTR will have the patient sign all proper releases to have the Substance Abuse Clinical Evaluation forwarded to the appropriate RTR facility.

· Clinical Assessment – Conducted to determine the presence of a Substance Abuse problem and if positive, the appropriateness and the intensity of an ASAM Level I program. ASAM Level I substance abuse treatment ranges from 3 hours per week, on a weekly basis, once per week for a duration of 17 weeks up to 9 hours per week three times per week, on a weekly basis, for a duration of 52 weeks.

· Multiple DUI Offenders – (Driver's License Reinstatement) The evaluation for Driver's License reinstatement purposes must be completed according to the Department of Human Resources guidelines and in compliance with HB 681 and HB 336. An evaluation and treatment program that does not follow the DHR guidelines for Multiple DUI Offenders will not allow the patient/client to apply said evaluation and/or treatment for license reinstatement.

· Cognitive Behavioral Model (CBT) - Cognitive–behavioral groups are a well-established part of the substance abuse treatment field and are particularly appropriate in early recovery. The term “cognitive–behavioral therapy group” covers a wide range of formats informed by a variety of theoretical frameworks, but the common thread is cognitive restructuring as the basic methodology of change.

Group Sessions – The ASAM Level I program is the first level of substance abuse treatment and consists of a minimum of 3 hours per week for 17 weeks up to a maximum of 9 hours per week for 52 weeks. The actual length of treatment is determined by the treatment provider. There is a maximum of

· three absences allowed during the length of the program. Groups are culture and language specific. Groups are provided on weeknights and weekends – (Sunday groups in English in Lawrenceville and in Spanish in Forest Park). The Clinical Evaluator may only recommend an ASAM Level of treatment.

· Support Groups – The ASAM Level – I program requires verified attendance and participation in Support Groups (Alcoholics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous). Support groups bolster members' efforts to develop and strengthen the ability to manage their thinking and emotions and to develop better interpersonal skills as they recover from substance abuse. Support group members also help each other with pragmatic concerns, such as maintaining abstinence and managing day-to-day living.

· Random Drug Screens – There is random alcohol and drug testing while in the program. A baseline Drug Screen is collected within in first 2 weeks and a positive drug screen may be reason for further evaluation or for referral to more intensive level of treatment.

The Relapse Prevention Program

· Intake/Screening – Conducted immediately after completion of an Outpatient Treatment Program. Most people in the RPP have completed an ASAM Level I or above program within 30 days from Intake.

· Psycho-educational Model - Relapse prevention groups draw on techniques used in a variety of other types of groups, especially the cognitive–behavioral, psycho educational, skills development, and process-oriented groups. Because the purpose of a relapse prevention group is to help members develop new ways of living and relating to others, thereby undercutting the need to return to substance use or abuse, potential group members need to achieve a period of abstinence before joining a relapse prevention group

· Support Groups – The program encourages Support Groups (Alcoholics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous) since participation in such groups on a voluntary basis serve as an educational experience in the long term consequences of substance dependence; however, the participants are not mandated to attend Support Groups at this level of education.
