Brockport voters decide to keep village governmentby Kristina Gabalski

Brockport Mayor Margaret Blackman says she and other Village Board mem-bers are looking forward to getting back to work now that voters have rejected a proposition that would have dissolved the village government.

“We were optimistic that people would want to keep their village,” the mayor said Tuesday evening, May 24, after results were announced that the dissolution proposition had been voted down 817 to 632.

She said she is also optimistic about the future of the village. “We need to better educate people about the budget,” Mayor Blackman explained, and noted the village will continue to pursue out-side sources of revenue as a way to keep taxes in check.

Rhett King headed a group of residents who petitioned for the dissolution vote and organized a not-for-profit group called NY Villagers for Efficient Government, which called for unification between the village and Town of Sweden to lower the tax burden.

He said he was excited to bring the issue to the voters, but was disappointed with the results.

A college town like Brockport needs a community police force, the chief noted, but with two-thirds of the village taken up by the SUNY campus - which is tax exempt, “We need some relief,” the Chief said.

Chief Varrenti said he is concerned that more than 600 people voted to dissolve village government. “I want everybody to want this village,” he said.

Hilton School District seekinghost for Chinese language teacher

During the 2016-2017 school-year, the Hilton School District will partici-pate for a second year in the Chinese Guest Teacher Program through the Confucius Institute at the University of Massachusetts in Boston. A teacher from the Institute will spend the school year teaching Mandarin Chinese at Hil-ton High School. Students will have the opportunity to take the .5 credit elective course during study hall time in the fall and spring semesters.

The district is currently seeking a host to provide housing, transportation and sight-seeing opportunities for this guest teacher from September 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017. The host fam-

ily would need to provide a separate bedroom and bath, in-home laundry access and a kitchen facility. An in-law apartment situation works best. Trans-portation to and from school, shopping, etc. would also need to be provided if the housing is not located on a bus line.

The Institute will pay a stipend of $750 each month to the host family. Community mentors are also needed to show the guest teacher local sights. Community mentors do not have to be the person or family providing the housing.

SHOULD YOU ATTEND?

www.burgerfuneralhome.com

The news that someone with whom you are ac-quainted has died usually elicits a mix of shock and sadness. After that, the decision to attend the funeral of the deceased is likely to be based on your feelings for the departed individual and your relationship with him or her. However, in many cases, the decision to attend a funeral is not entirely clear cut. While the deceased may have been a family member, relations may have been strained or the departed individual may have been estranged due to a divorce in the family. In these latter instances and others, it’s important to remember that death reminds people that past grudges and grievances

take a back seat to life-altering events. Death heals differences.

A funeral is a meaningful event that can help ease the pain of separation that naturally accompanies death. It is a time of sharing good memories and experiences with family and friends. It is a time when respect, concern, and appreciation for a life that has been lived can be expressed in a sincere manner. For more information, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585-392-7100. We are located at 735 East Avenue, and we are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

Proposed townhouse projectin Ogden gets preliminary approvalby Kristina Gabalski

Saying the project was not yet ready for final approval, members of the Ogden Planning Board May 12 gave preliminary approval for the proposed Parkview Center Townhomes development.

The approval was granted with contin-gencies that concerns of the town engineer, the town highway superintendent and the Planning Board attorney be satisfied.

The 40 townhouse unit project is pro-posed on slightly more than four acres of land between Land Re Way and North Union Street on property that is zoned Multi-Family Residential.

Planning Board member Mary Lou Het-zke was the only member who voted no on preliminary approval. During a public hearing on the project, she expressed concerns over the lack of outdoor play space for children who might reside in the development.

The development will be serviced by public water and public sanitary facilities, and Richard Giraulo of LandTech Survey-ing & Planning/LaDieu Consulting, LLC, told Planning Board members developers had met with Town of Ogden and Village of Spencerport staff regarding how to provide sanitary sewers.

“The town will install a permanent pump station off-site,” Giraulo said. “The full-size (system) is being installed at this time.”

During the March Planning Board meeting, Highway Superintendent David Widger had expressed concerns over plans by the developers to utilize a temporary dedicated pump station for sewage.

Giraulo said the project includes 36, two bedroom units, and 4, three bedroom units. All units would be two-story and have a one-car garage, he said. The project includes the construction of four separate buildings.

The rear of the proposed project will face North Union Street, but will be finished to look like the front of the townhomes, Gi-raulo said. “It will be appealing to motorists coming down North Union,” he said.

Giraulo told Planning Board members roadways within the development have been widened to provide adequate space for emergency/fire needs.

During the public hearing, a represen-tative of the Ogden Conservation Board noted the project is part of a gateway to the village, “we should ensure it fits into the character of the neighborhood,” he said.

Drainage was also raised as an issue of concern. “It was typically wet when it was used as farmland,” the Conservation Board explained ... “(we must make sure) neighbors on North Union and across are not impacted by the development.”

Town Engineer John Freel agreed. “We need to work on overall drainage,” he said.

The proposed project is in need of vari-ances, which will be taken up by the Ogden Zoning Board during their June meeting, Patrick Smith, Odgen Building Inspector, said.

One resident spoke during the public hearing; a resident of North Union Street, said she worries about the increase in traffic approaching the North Union/Big Ridge Road intersection. “I have safety concerns,” she said. “It’s such a busy road.” She also noted drainage issues, which she called, “horrible for the whole area ... as a homeowner in the area, we have two sump pumps and a stream of water all the time.”

Planning Board Chair Gary Parker said, “We are paying very close attention to (drainage). We are currently addressing that.” He also read into the record a letter received from a resident who expressed concerns over landscaping and how the buildings will look.

Hilton Board of Educationrecognizes Friends of Education

Every school year the Hilton Board of Education honors individuals and organi-zations in the Hilton school community who have contributed to the education of Hilton students through volunteering or other ef-forts. This year’s Friends of Education were recognized at the May 10 board meeting.

Hilton High School Principal Brian Bartalo recognized parents Peter and Janel Miles for Peter’s involvement in the Break-fast with a Scientist event and Janel’s as-sistance with various class activities and events. “Mr. and Mrs. Miles are involved parents that have gone ‘the extra mile’ to help our school, our staff and our students through their support and volunteerism,” said Bartalo.

Representing the Music Department, Chairperson Linda Davis presented the award to Deborah and Daniel Florio for serving as chaperones for music functions and taking the time to record all of the performances for each of the instrumental groups. “Deborah and Daniel Florio work with the department professionally and enthusiastically, and always keep the in-terest of the students first and foremost,” said Davis.

Athletic Director Michael Giruzzi rec-ognized Laurie Carbone and Lara Coyle for all they have done for the varsity ice hockey program over the past six years, such as organizing fundraising, maintain-ing finances, planning trips and supporting coaches. “The Hilton ice hockey program and coaching staff are forever indebted to Laurie and Lara for all they have done and continue to do for our program,” said Coach Chris Monfiletto.

Merton Williams Middle School Princi-pal Tracie Czebatol presented the award to Tammy Haynes for supporting the musical productions by sewing costumes for chorus members, making the productions better than ever. “We are truly fortunate to have such a devoted and caring person contribut-ing to our students’ lives in a positive, loyal

and collaborative fashion,” said Czebatol.Northwood Elementary School Principal

Kirk Ashton recognized Anjelica Russo for being an integral part of VEPTO, the parent-teacher organization; serving as volunteer coordinator; pitching in with many events; and organizing fundraisers, such as the highly successful Spring Fling and BBQ. “Anjelica realizes the immense power that parental support yields and how it translates into making a difference in the lives of so many students,” said Ashton.

Village Elementary Principal Ben Rudd recognized Brenda Avedisian for teaching many lessons to students on the process of hatching chickens, such as candling eggs, graphing results and weighing the eggs. “As a result of her work, she has brought awareness for agriculture into the classroom through a variety of experiences while connecting instruction to our science curriculum,” said Rudd.

Bobbi Sarnov, a volunteer at Quest El-ementary School, was recognized by Prin-cipal Renee Mulrooney for dedicating the past 10 years to support Quest by serving on the PTSO in multiple capacities, serving as a valuable contributor to school-wide events and helping in classrooms. “Bobbi is a special person, and has used her talents and skills to make Quest a fabulous place for students and staff,” said Mulrooney.

The district wide Friends of Education Award was presented by Superintendent Casey Kosiorek to Jennifer Green, parent and Hilton United Methodist Church pas-tor, for her work in providing a summer backpack program to ensure that students have food when school is not in session.

Jennifer also provides counsel to stu-dents who attend her church, and offers support to the district in many other ways. “We are so fortunate to have someone as devoted and caring to contribute to both our school and greater community,” said Kosiorek.

A Prayer to the Blessed Virgin(Never Found to Fail)

O Most beautiful Flower of Mount Carmel, Fruitful Vine, Splendour of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Im-maculate Virgin, assist me in this my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother.

O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity, there are none that can withstand your power.

O, show me herein you are my mother, O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for who have recourse to thee. (3 times) Sweet mother, I place this cause in your hands. (3 times).

Spencerport receives over-whelming approvalof school budget

We wanted to publicly express our appreciation to our community of voters, for the overwhelming approval of the school budget for 2016-17. With a 77.2 percent mar-gin of approval, this is by far the best approval rating we have ever received, and reflects the ongoing trust and partnership we share with our families and community.

Time and again, we hear the feedback from our stu-dents, parents and residents about the outstanding academics and quality programs we offer in Spencer-port, and this sentiment resonates within the district throughout the year and we believe contributes to such a high approval rating.

Your votes validate the commitment we share in edu-cating and inspiring our children, all while achieving this through sound financial decisions to ensure long-term fiscal management and minimal impact on our tax-payers.

As in previous years, the budget development process has been a collaborative one, with a great deal of dedica-tion and hard work involving the Board of Education, administrators, staff, teachers, Budget Focus Group vol-unteers and district voters. We value the integral role and responsibility everyone brings to this collaborative effort and the ultimate impact this has on our students.

Again, please accept our sincerest gratitude in sup-porting the 2016-17 budget.

Rangers reach number one in Class Bby Warren Kozireski

Spencerport’s girls’ lacrosse team scored the first four goals of the game and came out of halftime with three more unan-swered tallies in an 8-5 win over Webster Schroeder in the final game of the regular season. The win improved the Rangers record to 15-1 and the top seed in the Class B Section V playoffs.

Freshman Natalie Choate began the scoring with the first of her five goals with an assist from Maliah Benedetto at 2:55.

Freshman Emily Coykendall found se-nior Sara Roman with a pass to make it 2-0 at 10:20. The Rangers scored twice more within 22 seconds as Benedetto converted after a 30-yard spring to the goal followed by Choate’s second from Erin Coykendall.

Schroeder closed the gap with three goals over the final 9:37 of the first half, but the Rangers offense again found their rhythm to open the second.

Choate scored twice - the first with an as-sist from Emily Coykendall and the second from sister, Erin - the 300th varsity point

for the third-year starter. Benedetto netted her second of the game at 8:32 to build the Rangers lead to 7-3.

Schroeder scored twice more before the end of the half, but Choate netted her fifth from Erin Coykendall after a three minute offensive possession to complete the scor-ing. Senior goalkeeper Olivia Schroeder made 11 saves in net for the win.

The 15-win season is the best in school history for the program. Ranked 20th among Class B schools in the New York State Sportswriters May 23 poll, the Rang-ers only loss this season was to Fairport, who is ranked 22nd in the state in Class A.

They defeated Churchville-Chili 4-3 in the playoff quarterfinals to advance to the semis against Webster-Thomas.

All four of Spencerport’s seniors plan to play college lacrosse in the fall. Schroeder is committed to Niagara University, Kelly Mohan to Edinboro, Sara Roman is head-ing to St. John Fisher and Alexis Plouffe to Fredonia. Erin Coykendall is already committed to Northwestern three years prior to her graduation.

Hilton and Spencerport advance in tennis sectionalsby Warren Kozireski

Spencerport’s first doubles team of David Debellis and Tyler MacDonald overcame a first set loss to win 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 to give the Rangers a 4-3 win over Canandaigua in the Section V quarterfinals. Hilton didn’t lose a single set in a 7-0 shutout over Edison.

Rangers second singles Matthew Davis also lost his first set 1-6 before rebounding with resounding 6-1, 6-1 wins in the final two. Third singles Tyler DeCosse won his match 6-1, 7-6 while second doubles Quin Carr and Spencer Curtis also took a 6-2,

7-6 decision. For the Cadets, Tyler Barwald, Austin

Schmitt, Jeff Hibbard and Brady Ferrell all took 6-0, 6-0 decision at first-fourth singles respectively.

First doubles Liam Bennett and Joe Cal-lery also won 6-0, 6-0 while second doubles Mike Cunico and Nick Lyons and third doubles Simon Garno and Brett Healey both won via forfeit.

Hilton won the Division III regular sea-son title with a 4-0 record with Spencerport taking the Division IV crown with a 5-0 campaign.

Get ready for rhubarb seasonby Kristina Gabalski

I love fruit and sometimes I like to think of my garden as a pie garden. I have rasp-berries, grapes, apples, cherries, currants, and - even though it’s really considered a vegetable - rhubarb, which I love to use for pies.

It has become a tradition for me to start the summer season with the baking of a rhubarb pie on Memorial Day weekend. Come September, the summer season ends on Labor Day weekend with the baking of an apple pie - both of which are made with produce from my garden. Pie making is deliciously satisfying for me and I love to be able to use what I grow in my own yard. It’s edible landscaping at its best, I think.

The rhubarb harvest is currently under-way in our area and although strawberry/rhubarb is a June delicacy, rhubarb sauces and pies are a tasty way to feature the tart home-grown treat on its own.

Growing rhubarb is not difficult and if you have at least a corner of your yard for a few plants, it’s fun to grow. The harvest is early in the season, which I really like because at this point I feel like I can’t stand it any longer until the local produce season begins.

Purchase rhubarb roots or potted rhu-

barb at your garden center and carefully consider the location for planting, as rhu-barb can be a long-lived plant. Rhubarb loves well-drained, deep, fertile soil, high in organic matter. You might want to con-sider improving your soil the year before you plant.

Rhubarb can tolerate part-shade, but for highest yields, plant in full sun in a spot with consistent moisture. Dormant crowns should be planted in early spring, as soon as the soil can be worked. Potted plants can be planted at any time. Crowns should be planted 1-3 inches deep and 2-3 feet apart - give your rhubarb plenty of room to grow and a spot with good air circulation.

Mulching helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. The plants require little or no fertilizer.

The first year, remove flower stalks, which form when the weather grows warmer. This strengthens the developing plant. Do not harvest leaf stems until the second year and hold off on a major harvest until the third year when the plants are well established.

To harvest, pull leaves with stalks in a gently twisting motion. Use only the stalks - the leaves contain oxalic acid, which is toxic in high doses. Leaves can be compos-ted or used as a mulch. Refrigerate stalks for one week. Place them in a plastic bag or wrap in a damp cloth. Stalks can also be frozen, cooked or raw, in an airtight container.

Use rhubarb for pies, jams or sauces. An easy sauce can be made with 10 cups cubed rhubarb, three cups sugar and one teaspoon ground cinnamon.

Place rhubarb in a large pot and almost cover with water. Bring to a boil and then simmer over medium heat until very tender - about 20 minutes, while stirring occasion-ally. Remove from heat and add sugar and cinnamon until dissolved. Serve hot or cold (allrecipes.com).

Lori Skoog - local gardener/grower extraordi-naire - harvests rhubarb at Skoog Farm in the town of Sweden in a photo taken during the 2015 harvest. Lori makes scrumptious pies with her lovely tart leaf stalks. K. Gabalski photo.

Hamlin Wheel Fest to feature Silent Auction benefitting Mia Foundationby Grace Griffee

The 19th Annual Hamlin Wheel Fest will be held on Saturday, June 4 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Hamlin Firemen’s Field, 1521 Lake Road. This year’s festival will once again feature a silent auction that benefits a local not-for-profit organization.

The Wheel Fest Committee, which has had many of the same members since the festival began, makes sug-gestions as to where the proceeds should go and then committee mem-bers vote.

Past recipients include the Hamlin VFW Post 6703, Craig A. Goodrich Dog Shelter, Life Solutions, Hamlin Fire Department, Hamlin Public Library and Hamlin Recreation just to name a few. “Every year the proceeds go to a different group that helps the commu-nity,” said Michelle Johnson, Deputy Town Clerk. “The Mia Foundation was chosen this year.”

The Mia Foundation was developed four years ago to give animals born with birth defects a fighting chance. The Foundation was inspired by a tiny Chihuahua named Mia, who was born with a cleft palate. It was suggested at birth that she be euthanized, but Sue Rogers and her husband, Gary, gave her tender loving care and not only did she survive for almost two years, but she paved the way for the more than 500 animals that have been helped by the Foundation so far.

“Not all of the animals survive, but ALL are given a chance,” said Rogers. “So many animals born with birth de-

fects, such as cleft palates or missing limbs, are euthanized at birth. With a little work and a lot of love, these animals give back so much more than anyone could possibly imagine. All they need is a chance!”

The Mia Foundation runs solely on donations. In one week alone they can spend $7,000 for surgeries, routine vet appointments and critical cases. “Fundraisers are very important in raising much needed funds to keep the Foundation going,” noted Rogers.

The Foundation partners with Ham-lin Dog Shelter to foster some of the animals and the shelter even has a kennel dedicated to the Mia Founda-tion. “We love the crew over there and are so blessed to have them on our team,” said Rogers. “It helps to have a place to show dogs in person. The dogs can be viewed by the public instead of just seeing pictures on the internet.”

Over 40 businesses and individuals have donated items to the silent auc-tion so far. They include hair products, dog items, kitchen items, dolls, stuffed animals, hats, bags, toys, fabric, file folders, t-shirts, candles, lotions, soaps, a tax preparation gift certificate, baby blankets, gift certificates for restau-rants and stores, gift baskets, tickets to Red Wings, Rochester Flash and Buf-falo Sabres games, and much more.

“The Mia Foundation and its pre-cious animals thanks Hamlin and the Wheel Fest Committee for having us be the recipients of this year’s donations,” said Rogers. To learn more about the Mia Foundation, visit themiafounda-tion.com.

1521 Lake Road, Hamlin

History of the Hamlin Wheel FestThe Town of Hamlin’s Wheel Fest be-

gan in 1997. The goal was to have a fam-ily-oriented event that was identified with the Town. When trying to determine what the nature of the event should be, the town historian noticed something unusual about the pictures that graced the walls of the Northstar History Center: everything had wheels! Hamlin’s early residents had wagons, tractors, and other wheeled equip-ment to help them navigate, manage, and farm this northwestern town in Monroe County.

The first Wheel Fest featured the town’s pioneer wheels: conestoga wagons, high-wheeled bicycles, antique tractors, and

even had a steam engine that festival go-ers could ride. The Cruise-In, one of the featured events, had numerous antique ve-hicles - a popular component of the Wheel Fest that remains to this day.

There are up to 6,000 people that at-tend the Wheel Fest annually and enjoy tasty food, listen to excellent music by lo-cal bands, admire the classic cars and view the antique outboard motor display, appre-ciate the creativity of local crafters, and play with their children in the kids corner. The silent auction, always demonstrating the kindness and good intent of local do-nors and sponsors, will provide funds to benefit the Mia Foundation this year.

History on Tap at Genesee Country Village & MuseumForty years and forty beers; that’s

the theme for Genesee Country Village & Museum’s History on Tap program to take place on Friday, June 3 at the museum, in celebration of its 40th an-niversary.

From 5 to 9 p.m., visitors are invited to stroll the grounds and sample a variety of alcoholic beverages (including wines and ciders) created by local brewers and vintners, while listening to the live music of the rock band, Dog House.

Some two dozen buildings will be open for exploration, including upper reaches of Hyde (Octagon) and Hamilton houses, not often open to the public. Party food will be available for purchase.

Admission costs $20 online (www.gcv.org) or $25 at the door and is limited to

those 21 and over. It also includes a GCVM 40th-Anniversary commemora-tive tasting glass and a cash bar avail-able throughout the evening.

For more information, visit www.gcv.org or call 294-8218.

If you're contemplating a way to heighten the elegance, func-tionality and resale value of your home, it's wise to take a look at the latest trends in kitchen surfaces. A major kitchen remodel can increase the real value of your home more significantly than any other alteration. It's important to know what styles and materials are most popular with consumers when you select your new kitchen surfaces.

Home design experts say homeowners are most interested in natural, highly durable materials this year. Upscale kitchens often include stone countertops, the most popular being granite, marble, quartz and limestone.

Granite countertops are a current homeowner favorite because they're the most durable. You can carve a roast, roll pizza dough, or set a hot frying pan directly on granite without damaging it. Although stone is porous, requiring special sealants to keep out mositure, granite is the least absorbent and only requires resealing about once a year. Other popular countertops are stainless steel, tile and plastic laminate. The choice will be determined by the style, color scheme and price of your kitchen.
