• The subway is essential to New York City’s existence.

• It is the second-oldest subway in the United States after the system in Boston.

• In 2002, an average 4.8 million passengers used the metro each weekday.

7 SUBWAY EXTENSION

1.5-mile extension of the No. 7 line to serve the Hudson Yards area.

From Times Square and continues along 41st Street and 11th Avenue, and then to a new terminal at 34th Street and 11th Avenue.

• The Metropolitan Transportation Authority and MTA Capital Construction are building a new Fulton Street Transit Center.

• It will incorporate six existing Lower Manhattan subway stations.

• $880 million project.

• Purpose to provide faster travel for current transit riders and relieve severe overcrowding conditions on Lexington Avenue line.
