WEEK 6 SUMMER TERM 2015 STRANDS SUCCESS FOR MOIRA HOUSE EQUESTRIAN TEAM The Moira House Equestrian Team swept the board last weekend with notable successes in many different categories. Our show-jumpers Flora Alessandroni (Year 13) and Sasha Baldwin (Year 4) excelled at the Inter-School competition at Felbridge Show Ground. Sasha blitzed round the courses coming 2nd in each class out of 45 competitors of all ages. Riding her pony Alfie, she got a huge round of applause from the spectators for her superb ride against the clock. Flora then followed up with a classy, technical ride to take 2nd place in the 1m Open on her horse Chester. Hannah Nelson (Year 7) was busy at the Heathfield Show also at the weekend, showing her pony, Harrold, in Championship classes. Our youngest rider, Rosie-Sue Maynard-Watkins (Year 2) ventured out for the first time to the Bexhill Horse Show and won Best Leading Rein and Best Rider classes, scooping a silver trophy and two red rosettes! She was accompanied by Flora who led her in her classes, and who is enjoying coaching the emerging talent at Moira House School. FOUNDER’S DAY – SATURDAY 30 MAY The girls have been busy rehearsing for Founder’s Day this week and we hope that you are all looking forward to the celebrations. The presentation will begin at 10 am at the Congress Theatre and we ask that you arrive by 9.30 am to take your seats. We hope you will then be joining us for lunch at School and a Rounder’s Tournament in the afternoon!

STRANDS WEEK 6 SUMMER TERM 2015

Year 3 and 4 photographs from last week’s visit to Hindleap Warren are now available to view on our website – click here to view the gallery.

YEAR 9 ART TRIP TO LONDON On Thursday, the Year 9s took a trip to London to visit the National Portrait Gallery, followed by the amazing Alexander McQueen exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum. The girls had an inspiring time broadening their art and design knowledge.

BALL GIRLING CREW The girls are literally in their last practice sessions for the ensuing Aegon Tennis Tournament at Devonshire Park, beginning on Founder’s Day tomorrow. Our young ball girls have had to work particularly hard to accomplish the demanding ball girling skills and court etiquette required! We are extremely grateful for the input of our older girls who have helped their younger peers and particularly Anna Davison, Alice Greenland and Chloe Pollard for their time spent in after School sessions - they have been wonderful role models. The fun, however, begins on Saturday and with free entry to the courts, we invite all parents to attend throughout the week to see some great tennis and to watch their daughters work tirelessly!

YEAR 7 CAMPING TRIP TO BLACKLAND FARM Over the bank holiday weekend, Year 7 took a camping trip with Mrs Twaites and Miss Martin to Blackland Farm. The weather stayed dry for them, and they had a really fun time in the outdoors!

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents I hope you had a chance to enjoy the short break last weekend. We have all been extremely busy on our return as we prepare for Founder’s Day. I have just returned from the rehearsal at the Congress Theatre and the girls are preparing a great show for us. A special thanks must go to Mr Cousins for his efforts in making sure all is well with the day. I know we will see many of you there and afterwards back at School for lunch. I hope as many of you as possible will be able to join in the inaugural Founder’s Day challenge which, this year is a rounder’s match. The teams will consist of pupils, Old Girls, staff and parents, all of them representing their Pyramid. Please contact Mr Pollard or Mr McMahon should you wish to participate. We also wish members of our Ball Crew a good afternoon as they will go directly from the Congress Theatre to the Devonshire Park to support an international tennis event. Saturday evening’s Founder’s Ball will finish the day off in style. We have sold most of the tickets but there may be a few still available should you wish to attend. This event is for all friends of Moira House, so please E-Mail my PA, Nicky Langford ([email protected]) if you require any last minute tickets. On Thursday morning we held the final meeting with our Junior Parent Representatives for the year. I would like to thank the parents who have made this forum work so well. It has been well received by the members and I hope that you have found it a useful vehicle for communication with the senior management. If any parents wish to put their name forward for next year, please see your current representative. Please remember that we are having a school Prize Giving on 18 June here at School. After discussion with the Junior Parent Representatives, it was felt that this should be for Years 3 to 13. Hopefully as many parents as possible will be able to attend. With this event now in the diary please note that Founder’s Day will change slightly and the usual prizes, awards and farewells that were appropriate when the day was on the last day of term will be held over to the Prize Giving evening. Best wishes Mr James Sheridan Principal

THIS WEEK IN SPORTS East Sussex Junior Netball League Final results for the ESJNL are in! As mentioned last week in Stands, the results were eagerly awaited for but unfortunately Moira House were very narrowly beaten to the top position. However, all the girls played tremendously well and we were proud to finish with very commendable second and third placements. The U16s almost reached first place, however they were beaten by only two goals, the U14s made an amazing recovery in their game but run out of time before they could take the lead, and the U12s equally battled well with a superb final game. It has been a great season at Hampden Park in the League and the girls have played some inspirational Netball. Daisy Williams (Year 7), Olivia Standing (Year 9) and Frankie Head (Year 11) have been standout players in their respective teams. U12 and U13 Sussex Schools' Tennis Tournament Congratulations to our very young Tennis team - Stephanie Vieira (Year 5), Imogen McNaughton-Ely (Year 5), Chloe Walker (Year 8) and Megan Lee (Year 6) - for successfully qualifying for the quarter finals of the U13 Sussex Schools' Tennis Tournament after having competed against Brighton College, Lancing College and Bede’s B in the group stages! Their quarter final match against Burgess Hill was nail-bitingly close! After both doubles matches, the points score was exactly level. A deciding tie break had to be played, which sadly we lost, narrowly, by 5 points to 4. Nonetheless it was a very impressive performance by our young team - well done!

Junior Pyramid Rounders On Wednesday, the Year 7 and 8 Pyramid Rounders was a most exciting occasion! With good practice before the competition, the girls fielded and batted superbly with the complete effort and determination that goes with Moira House Pyramid competitions. Vulcan won the day however, although they drew their match with Pegasus, who shared equal points with Excalibur. It was all very close and a Tournament enjoyed by all! Years 3 - 6 competed alongside one another in the Junior section of the Pyramid competition - and what a great competition it was! Strong batting and running led to a high scoring event, with Imogen McNaughton-Ely being declared as the batter of the Tournament. Excalibur won the day with a total score of 30 rounders. Results from both competitions were added together to produce an overall Junior Pyramid winner: 1st Excalibur with 24 points 2nd Pegasus with 19 points 3rd Vulcan with 15 points 4th Merlin with 12 points Congratulations to Excalibur and well done to all competitors!
