ROLLAN DE BY ESTATE

PRESENTATION OFROLLAN DE BY WINE ESTATE

The interior decorator becomeswinemaker

For years Jean Guyon excelled indecorating houses and palacesaround the world. At the same timehe developed a love for wine, especially wine from the Médoc. Hebegan to wonder if he too couldproduce a great wine, so in 1989 hepurchased Chateau Rollan de By(2ha) in the Northern Medoc villageof Begadan. He started with nobusiness plan but a strong ambitionto make outstanding wines.

From 2ha to 200ha... DomainesRollan de By doubles its size withChateau Greysac

From the beginning Chateau Rollande By has been growing in size as hasits reputation for making excellentwine. Since this first acquisition JeanGuyon has also acquired severaladditional properties including:Chateau Haut Condissas (1995),Chateau Tour Seran (2000), ChateauLa Clare (2001) and Chateau La Rosede By (2011). Most recently he hasacquired Chateau Greysac, Chateaude By and Chateau du Monthil(2012).

One of the leading Cru Bourgeoisproducers

With about 1 million bottles per yearof Cru Bourgeois, Domaines Rollande By has become one of the leadersin terms of production. It is also oneof the leaders in terms of quality, which is recognized around theworld. Our 4 Cru Bourgeois areRollan de By, Greysac, Tour Seran, and La Clare- all are AOC Médoc.

Domaines Rollan de By, a greatvalue wines producer

Robert Parker and Wine Spectatoroften describe our wines as beinggreat values. Actually, in 2010 Rollande By was the only Bordeauxselected in Wine Spectator’s Top 100based on value. Rollan de By andHaut Condissas have gained solidreputations by over performing inblind tastings conducted by theprestigious Grand Jury Européen.

PRIMEURS 2014DOMAINES ROLLAN DE BY

Château Haut-Condissas 2014: 16.5/20 (88/100)Lots of depth and tannins quite high – the 20% PetitVerdot fruit is evident. Big wine, will be impressive. Drink:2019-2028 Taster: Steven Spurrier

Château Rollan de By 2014: 16.25/20 (87/100)Deep meaty fruit based on ripe 70% Merlot and ripetannins. Drink: 2018-2023 Taster: Steven Spurrier

Château Greysac 2014: 16/20 (86/100)Nice rich fruit of some class and depth. Drink: 2018-2024Taster: Steven Spurrier

Château Tour Seran 2014: 15.25/20 (84/100)Quite rich, smoky fruit that is ripe and earthy. Drink: 2018-2022 Taster: Steven Spurrier

Château Rollan de By 2014: 87-90/100The bright red currant and cherry fruit is laced with lilacand iron notes, revealing a pleasantly austere edge on thefinish. -J.M.

Château Greysac 2014: 86-89/100A frankly pumped-up style, with lot of toast and grenachenotes leading the way of black currant and blackberry fruit.Turns chewy through the finish. A touch over done in theend. -J.M.

Château Greysac 2014 90-92 pointsA ripe and juicy wine with generous fruit touched by onlythe lightest of tannins. The fruit-forward nature of thiswine carries through the rich finish. -R.V.

Château Haut Condissas 92-93/100 (16.5-17/20)Belle intensité, suavité et velouté, profondeur musclée.Grande profondeur et aptitude au vieillissement assurée.

Château Rollan de By 91/100 (16/20)Gras onctueux, tannin fin, allonge enveloppante.

Plenty of black fruit and a touch of vanillasweetness. Chewy and pretty dry on the palate but there'sthe fruit for a wholesome future. Straightforward butharmonious and honest to the appellation. (JH) Drink2018-2024

Château Rollan de By 2014 15.5+/20Deep crimson. Spicy, ripe blackcurrant aroma. Chewytannins but better proportioned than the Tour Séran justtasted so that the tannins are less drying. Still pretty tannicon the finish. (JH) Drink 2018-2026

Château Greysac 2014 15.5+/20Deep crimson. Not as aromatic as some. Lots offreshness and good depth of fruit. Just a bit lean on thefinish, the tannins dominant. (JH) Drink 2018-2024

Château Tour Séran 2014 15/20Deep crimson. Spicy, caressing dark-fruit aroma. Gives asense of warmth. A little bit too cedary on the palate, thetannins firm and rather dry on the finish, without theflesh to compensate. (JH) Drink 2017-2023

Château Rollan de By 2014: 90-91/100Pourpre profond.

A suivre. 2022-2039.

Château Rollan de By 2014: 89-91/100A rather supple and smooth Bordeaux sample, with aMerlot like plumpness offsetting the high tannin andacidity. This promises to be very tasty and not tooexpensive.

Château Haut Condissas 2014: 89-91/100Made from the same producers as the Rollan de By. A moreconcentrated style and aiming to impress. I like it, but forsome reason I almost prefer the more “fluid” style of theRollan de By.

LE FIGARO, Bernard Burtschy
