National Friendship Day

was Sunday, August 2nd

!

Each year in August, National Immunization Awareness Month provides an opportunity to highlight the value of immunization across the lifespan. Activities focus on encouraging all people to protect their health by being vaccinated against infectious diseases. The two immunizations that are relevant to adults over the age of sixty are Zoster and Pneumococcus. Pneumococcal disease is an infection caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria. When pneumococcal bacteria spread to your ears or sinuses, it generally causes mild infections. When the bacteria spread into other parts of the body, it can lead to severe health problems such pneumonia or meningitis. These illnesses can be life threatening, especially for adults 65 years or older. Zoster immunizations protect against shingles, which affects one out of every three people in their lifetime. Shingles is caused by the varicella zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox, so anyone who has recovered from chickenpox may develop shingles. However, the risk of shingles increases as you get older. The recommendations are: Zoster: one dose after the age of 60 Pneumococcal 13-valent conjugate: one additional dose after the age of 65 Pneumococcal polysaccharide: one dose after the age of 65 if you have not received one yet The recommendation for the rest of these immunizations is one to three doses throughout the span of your life if a risk factor is present, if you lack documentation, or have no evidence of a previous infection. If you have any question about your immunization schedule, your doctor will provide you with best-informed advice.
