In November, the 2013 KAHPERD state convention was held on the ESU campus. HPER faculty member Matt Howe served as the local convention manager, while April Huddleston, KAHPERD convention manager assisted in the preparations. HPER Hall of Honor Nominees Requested

The Department of HPER has many outstanding graduates who should be recognized for their professional accomplishments. A nominee must be a graduate of the HPER department and have at least ten years past graduation. The nominee should be a respected member of the profession and have contributed significant service to his/her chosen field. Nominations may be sent to Dr. Mark Stanbrough at [email protected] or 620-341-5399. The 2014 HPER Hall of Honor will be held on April 11 on the ESU campus.

Four athletic training students competed in the Kansas Athletic Trainers’ Society Quiz Bowl in November. They placed third in the tournament. ESU student competitors were Shelby Smith, Ashleigh Harris, Logan Eck, and Ethan McCoy. Willie Leonard, recent graduate of the HPER masters degree placed third in the brown belt heavyweight division of jujitsu. The tournament was held at California State Long Beach University. HPER alumni, Jessica Stewart wed Matt Christian in November. Jessica teaches physical education in the Wichita, KS public schools. Dr. Paul Luebbers and three Health Promotion students attended the Central States Regional ACSM meeting in October. Students attending were Greg Farris, Tara Price, and Natasha Weilert. Farris made a presentation related to his research on two different types of undulating periodization for resistance training.

HPER alumni, Kassidy Shockley married Matt Messbarger in October. Kassidy received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from ESU. She currently teaches health and physical education in the Kanas City, KS school district.

Dr. Shawna Shane, Interim HPER Department Chair, adopted a baby boy born on November 2, 2013. The baby is named Rhett Michael Shane.

HPER faculty member, Dr. Karen Dowd was the keynote address presenter for the New York state AHPERD convention. In addition, while at the convention, Dr. Dowd served on two professional panels related to leadership and advocacy.

Leiss Completes Presidency

Dr. Damon Leiss completed his KAHPERD presidency at the recent convention held at ESU. The theme for Dr. Leiss’s presidency was “Serving Others.” At the KAHPERD banquet he was recognized for his service and leadership. He will remain on the KAHPERD Executive Council as the Past President where he will be responsible for next year’s convention program.

HPER Alumni KEYNOTE At the recent KAHPERD convention held at ESU, several HPER alumni were invited keynote presenters. Jason Busche, 2013 National Middle School Physical Educator of the Year presented two sessions. Jason received his masters degree from ESU in 2013.

Dr. DawnElla Braley Rust, 2006 Southern District AAHPERD University Health Educator of the Year offered two sessions on environmental health. Dr. Rust graduated from the

HPER masters program and is a HPER Hall of Honor inductee. Bob FitzPatrick, 2007 NASPE Eastern District Elementary Physical Educator of the Year also served as a presenter. He graduated from the HPER graduate program in 2003 and is currently an adjunct HPER graduate faculty member.

Awards for Faculty, Students, and Alumni

The faculty, students, and alumni of the HPER Department were honored with numerous awards during the recent state KAHPERD convention. Daphne Martens was named the KAHPERD health education undergraduate student of the year, while Jayme Lindstrom earned the KAHPERD physical education undergraduate student of the year award. The KAHPERD graduate awards were swept by Emporia State University. Current graduate student Amy Avery won the KAHPERD Graduate Teaching Award. Tyler Goad was honored with the KAHPERD Graduate Research Award. Both Amy and Tyler are graduate teaching assistants for the Department of HPER. Dr. Joella Mehrhof, HPER professor, was honored with a KAHPERD Appreciation Award. HPER alumni received several awards. Jim Brown was recognized as the Jump Rope for Heart Coordinator of the Year. Jo Flowers was honored with a Model School Award. Michelle DiLisio was recognized for service with the KAHPERD Service Award. Two HPER faculty have KAHPERD awards named for them. Dr. Vicki Worrell has the Vicki J. Worrell Service Award. Dr. Worrell has been involved in KAHPERD for over thirty years and has served as a KAHPERD President and is the current Executive Director. Dr. Kathy Ermler has the Kathy Ermler Technology Award named in her honor. Dr. Ermler served as a KAHPERD President and for many years as the Journal Editor and Webmaster.

The Health Promotion majors under the direction of HPER faculty member, Dr. Jennifer Thomas facilitated a health fair for those attending the KAHPERD convention. More than 200 participants were provided with current health information. This opportunity was made possible through a grant written by current graduate teaching assistant, Tiffany Orth.

Hodges Celebrates Milestone

HPER faculty member, Norma Hodges was surprised by the physical education methods students who honored

her 70th birthday. A video made for her related to the many concepts that she insists the students learn. Mrs. Hodges taught for many years at Emporia High School before coming to HPER at ESU. She has two degrees from the HPER department and is a member of the HPER Hall of Honor.

HPER Faculty Presentations Several HPER faculty members presented at the recent KAHPERD convention. Dr. Mike Butler presented on cloud computing, while Dr. Joella Mehrhof presented with six undergrad students on elementary physical education activities. Dr. Mark Stanbrough and Dr. Bill Stinson offered information on coaching standards; Dr. Stinson also presented a session on motion management. Erin Blocker presented a session on health education, as well as a second session on coaching women. Dr. Damon Leiss, Dr. Clinton Longacre, and Denise Hodges offered concepts on prairie games. Amy Townsend and undergrad student, Jayme Lindstrom presented activities for special needs students. Dr. Jennifer Thomas presented on marketing health promotion programs. Dr. Vicki Worrell and Dr. Karen Dowd (both past national presidents) facilitated a student session on advocacy and professional development. Bob FitzPatrick presented on student centered classes, as well a second session on functional strength. Dennis McCormick offered ideas for incorporating social dance into the elementary physical education program.

Upcoming Coaching Education Workshop The coaching education program at ESU will host the More Than X’s and O’s Coaching Education Workshop on April 8, 2014. The workshop goes beyond the traditional coaching clinic which focuses on the X’s and O’s to focus on character education, leadership, communication, motivation, sport psychology, team building, and team management. The workshop will feature national Positive Coaching expert Dr. Rick McGuire, the founder of the Missouri Institute for Positive Coaching and the Director of Sport Psychology at the University of Missouri. His message will be designed to help leaders, coaches, athletes, and parents establish a culture of positive, character building in sports. ESU is one of only ten institutions in the nation that is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Coaching Education (NCACE). This accreditation ensures that the ESU coaching education program adheres to the characteristics of excellence as prescribed by the National Standards for Sports Coaches. Annual Spring Migration Triathlon

The annual Spring Migration Triathlon at ESU will be held on April 13, 2014. The event is sponsored by the ESU coaching education program. The triathlon distances are a 400 meter swim in the ESU pool, a 20K bike ride, and a 5K run. Information on the triathlon will be posted at active.com or contact Dr. Mark Stanbrough at [email protected]. ESU students, alums, and supporters are encouraged to start training now and participate in the spring event.

HPER Hosts Disability Mentoring Day

In October, approximately 60 participants attended the Disability Mentoring Day held at Emporia State University and hosted by the HPER Department. This event allows for individuals with disabilities to job shadow a community member for a few hours. Later in the day, several ESU students provided the participants with physical activities. This opportunity was organized by HPER faculty members Amy Townsend and Denise Hodges.
