• GDP (2007): $50 billion• GDP annual growth rate (2007): 12.8%.• Per capita income GDP (2007): $2,500.• Avg. annual inflation rate (2007): 5.3%.• Natural resources: Modest reserves of oil, natural

gas, gold, iron ore, copper, and other industrial metals.

• Agriculture: Products--cotton, peanuts, sorghum, sesame seeds, gum Arabic, sugarcane, millet, livestock.

• Industry: Types--motor vehicle assembly, cement, cotton, edible oils and sugar refining.

• Fiscal year: January 1-December 31. • Major suppliers-European Union, China, Malaysia,

Canada, U.K., Italy, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the Persian Gulf states, and surrounding East African

Imports/Exports• Exports-$9.156 billion: crude oil and petroleum

products, cotton, gold, sorghum, peanuts, gum Arabic, sugar, meat, hides, live animals, and sesame seeds.

• Imports (2007 est.)-$8.262 billion: oil and petroleum products, oil pipeline, pumping and refining equipment, chemical products and equipment, wheat and wheat flour, transport equipment, foodstuffs, tea, agricultural inputs and machinery, industrial inputs and manufactured goods.

Political Environment• Independence- 1.January.1956

• CPA (2005)-Provisional Government established by the Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed in January 2005 that provides for power sharing pending national elections. National elections are to occur no later than July 2009.

• Darfur Issue is problematic enough

• Currently-Unity Government

• In 1982 (Nimeiri), SPLA was created and it kicked up again in recently

• Currently there are several political parties in both the nation's north and south. All political parties were banned following the June 30, 1989 military coup. Political associations, which take the place of parties, were authorized in 2000.

• Central government budget $14.6 billion.

• Defense 40% of GNP.

Islam

• Muslim: “Submission to Allah” (the will of Allah/God)

• Intent is everything (Forgiveness and protection)

• No difference, same message (trinity, we do monotheism)

• 5 Pillars: Declaration of faith, seal of all prophets, Prayer (salat), zakat, hajj, fasting

• Islam is a practice of volunteerism• Traveling, poor, impure• Authority higher than you

Islam Continued• Salat is patience (makes you pure and subdue the animal

side)• 6 things Muslims are witness to:

– Faith in Allah– Prophets– The 3 books (Quran, Bible, Torah)– Angels– Destiny (qada & qadr) (your life is written when your born)

complete psychological theory program, capabilities, volunteering, submission, sacrifice)

– Day of Resurrection• A true Muslim will not kill an ant, let alone a Muslim,

everything else if just fundamentalist idealism and radicalism.

Darfur

• Started in 2003-Some argue it stems from 1980’s during Mahdist regime.

Not individual to Sudan

• “Fur” people live mostly on the border of Sudan but also in Chad & Central African Republic

• Sudanese government • Darfur has rich resources

North/South Conflict

• Present even before independence

• Has it’s beginnings from British influence

• The issue is over land and resources and not religion

• 2011 is the vote on secession

• ¾ oil is in Sudan
