2. Drivers for SUDS implementation

2. Drivers for SUDS implementation

Urban expansion and development - SUDS control flowrates

and help avoid flooding.

Increased flows in the drainage systems of urban areas –

SUDS can reduce sewer flooding and discharge of sewage at

overflows.

Diffuse pollution – SUDS control quality of runoff from urban

surfaces.

Flows in quebradas – control of increased flows and poor

water quality.

Assist in controlling the effects of climate change.

2. Driver – urban expansion

3. The different SUDS components

Different SUDS types and their applicability

Ponds, wetlands

Basins, swales

Permeable paving, source control

3. SUDS types – level 1

Source control (level 1 treatment)

Filter strips – very efficient

Permeable paving – very efficient but need maintenance

Roadside filter drains – I don’t like these.

Green roofs

Water butts

Gully pot filters – a lot of research still needed.

The treatment train is important for larger systems

3. SUDS types – levels 2 & 3

Site control – (level 2 treatment)Swales

Detention basins

Detention ponds

Regional Control – (level 3 treatment)Retention pond & wetland

Disposal to ground (after groundwater risk assessment)

6. Evidencia del almacenamiento

6. Summary of the storage concept

• Development causes an increase of flows.

• Normally modelling (simple) is needed to determine the runoff hydrograph.

• Most SUDS require STORAGE

• Storage is required to ATTENUATE the flows.

• The more the storage, the better the potential for attenuation.

• The undeveloped flow is the target value for the CONTINUATION FLOW.

• The continuation flow is often know as GREENFIELD RUNOFF.

6. Details of Hydrological design

• Methods of rainfall estimation.

• Determining the inflow into the SUDS.

• Calculation of greenfield runoff.

• Determination of continuation flow.

• Determination of attenuation volume.

6. Estimación de precipitación

• Methods use Rainfall Statistics• Start with point rainfall intensity

•Duration•Return Period

• Modify using areal reduction factor• Normally incorporated into software

purposes

Methods of flow control; pipes, weirs, vortex controls

Creation of required storage

Design of inlets – access, maintenance, erosion issues

7. Continuation flow

7. Índices para el drenaje aguas abajo

•Greenfield runoff is used to set the ‘normal’ outflow flowrate during events.

•Extended detention – draindown increased to 24h to conserve low flows in rivers.

•Extreme events – must retain an emergency overflow when storage is full to avoid damage.

•Ponds have a bottom level to ensure permanent pool.

10. Permeable Asphalt – Hpermarché in France

Captures and attenuates surface/rain water for controlled release

The system can be free draining into the sub-grade or contained using an impermeable geo-membrane for re-use or controlled release into the sewer system

It can also capture re-directed rain water from adjacent structures e.g. roofs

Provides an alternative to conventional drainage systems

Improves outflow water quality
