Manufacturing substances in industry :SULPHURIC ACID
-
QUICK FACTS : Created in 1600sCreated by Johann Van Helmont140 million tonnes produced anually
-
Uses of Sulphuric Acid : USAGE
Drying agent ElectrolyteFertilisersProductionDetergentOxidising agent Dehydratingagent
-
Manufacturing Process:
-
Procedure :Made by contact process.Firstly, sulphur is burned in oxygen (S + O2 = SO2)Or heating of metal sulphides. (2ZnS + 3O2 = 2ZnO + 2SO2) 1st
-
Sulphur Dioxide is burned again in O2.Added with Vanadium (V) Oxide as catalyst.Temp. : 450oC - 500oCPressure : 1 atmReaction produces Sulphur Trioxide (SO2 + O2 = SO3)98% of product is SO3.

-
Sulphur Trioxide is dissolved in Concentrated Sulphuric Acid. (SO3 + H2SO4 = H2S2O7)Producing Oleum (H2S2O7).It's concentration reached 99.5%.Not acidic without H2O. Water is then added producing concentrated sulphuric acid (H2S2O7 + H2O = 2H2SO4)3rd

Summarizing:
-
Enviromental Problems: Obtained from : a) Bacterial Decay b) Volcanic gases c) Forest fires d) Coal or PetroleumBurning of the above items releases :# SO2
-
SO2 can dissolve in water or rain producing H2SO3.SO2 can be oxidised into SO3.SO3 dissolves in water producing H2SO4.CO2 dissolves in water producing H2CO3.This causes : "ACID RAIN"
-
EFFECTS :Damagingmarblestructure
Damagingmetal structure
Damage toSoil nutrients
Threat toaquaticlife
-
SO HOW CAN WE CONTROL???
-
Reacting them with : a) Calcium Oxide b) Calcium Hydroxide c) Calcium Carbonate
