Summary

Mr. Hiram B. Otis. an American Minister wished to purchase conterville

chase though his friends warned his against buying the haunted house soon

after moving into the conterville chase, Mrs. Otis noticed a blood-stain on theoor near the re place. However, the Otis reiterated that they were not

afraid of the ghosts. !he ne"t morning the blood stain was found again. !he

family decided to go out for a drive to distract their minds. !hey avoided any

mention of super natural in their conversation. #ven when the ghost

appeared before the Otis, he was ta$en a bac$ at the une"pected reactions

of members of the Olis family. !he ghost got furious and decided to ta$e

revenge. !he Otis decided to ta$e revenge. !he Otis family was amused on

noticing that the blood stain $ept changing colour. Only person

who did not %o$e was little &irginia who felt depressed to see that after the

second encounter with the family, the 'host was e"asperated and ed to

this room, in%ured and in pain. All e(orts of the ghost to scare the family were

wasted. !he ghost decided to retire and ta$e a brea$. !he Otis twins still

played their tric$s on him. !his was when he decided to teach a lesson to the

twins, giving them the fright of their lives. !he ghost become de%ected and

gove up all hope of frightening the Otis family. !he ghost had become

&irginias conseuent disappearance became a cause of concern and worry

for the Otis fanily. )u$e of *heshire accompained Mr. Otis in his search for

&irginia. Mr. Otis was touched by the )u$es concern for his daughter. At

midnight, &irginia appeared mysteriously and to everyones surprise said

that she had been with the said ghost. he told them that ghost was dead.

/our days later, a funeral procession was held &irginias eyes were full of 

tears. he was told to $eep the bo" of %ewels gifted to her by the ghost.

/ollowing her marriage with the )u$e of *heshire and their honeymoon,

&irginia visited the grave and strewed lovely roses on it. he told her

husband that ir imon made her see 0what life is and what deathsignieds and why love is stronger than both.0
