university status + foundinG chancellor

The past year has been a momentous one in the history of Emily Carr as the institution received university status, which was announced by the Premier at an event at Emily Carr on April 28, 2008. The new status came into effect in September of 2008 and this historic change reflects the fact that Emily Carr has been awarding undergraduate and graduate degrees to a wide and diverse group of students from BC, Canada and the world for many years. University status will allow Emily Carr to grow and develop as it moves into the 85th year of its proud history as British Columbia’s only specialized university of art, design and media.

University status has resulted in new legislation, new powers of the Board a new governance structure with Senate and the appointment of Emily Carr’s first Chancellor. In September, the Board was delighted to appoint Mr. John (Jake) C. Kerr as the founding Chancellor of EmilyCarrUniversityofArt+Design.
