Eligibility determination – Beginners language courses in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese,
Modern Greek and Spanish
Information and Application Form In order to enter a Stage 6 Beginners Language course, students must be determined eligible (see Eligibility criteria, below). Students should apply to their school principal for an eligibility determination, if possible during Term 3 of Year 10. Applying for eligibility determination Students applying for an eligibility determination must: • complete the Application for Eligibility Determination, including the Statutory
Declaration • provide relevant additional documentation if required by the principal • provide relevant additional documentation that the student wishes to include. False, inaccurate or incomplete information could place at risk a student’s eligibility for the Higher School Certificate. Eligibility criteria The eligibility criteria for Beginners Languages courses are as follows. • Students have had no more than 100 hours’ study of the language at the secondary level
(or equivalent). • Students have little or no previous knowledge of the language. For exchange students, a
significant in-country experience (involving experiences such as homestay and attendance at school) of more than three months renders a student ineligible.
Note: for the purpose of determining eligibility: • Speakers of dialects and variants of a language are considered to be speakers of the
standard language. • Speakers of Indonesian and speakers of Malay are considered to be speakers of both
languages. Determining eligibility • Eligibility to undertake a Beginners Language course is determined by the principal of the
school delivering the course. This may be the student’s home school, the Saturday School of Community Languages, the Open High School, a Distance Education Centre or TAFE. For a student who intends to study the course with an approved outside tutor, eligibility is determined by the principal of the student’s home school.
Georges River College Oatley Senior Campus Subject Selection Summary of Courses Offered 6 2
• To be deemed eligible for a course, a student must meet all of the eligibility criteria for that course at the time of entry to the course.
• The principal’s eligibility determination should, where possible, be provided to the student in writing at least 10 school weeks prior to the commencement of delivery of the course.
• If the student believes that the principal’s determination has not been made in accordance with the course eligibility criteria, they can seek a review of the determination initially from the principal and subsequently from the Board of Studies. Principals should inform students of the procedure for requesting a review and provide students with a Review of Eligibility Determination form on request. Further information regarding the procedure for requesting a review is available on the Board’s website.
