SUMMARY OF EXCEEDENCES, ALARMS AND RESPONSES FOR AIR MONITORING
LOCATIONS

Below is a summary of air quality results for the reporting period. Full details can be found
overleaf.
All PM10 dust monitoring has recorded levels below the recommended levels set in the National Environment Protection (Ambient Air Quality) Measure 2003 for dust particles less
than 10 microns in size. No exceedances of the assigned PM2.5 “Work Stoppage Level” were recorded in the period.
All Respirable Fibre Monitoring was below the occupational criteria of 0.1 f/mL as denoted in
the Adopted National Exposure Standards for Atmospheric Contaminants in the Occupational
Environment [NOHSC:1003(1995)]. These results were also below site action criteria of
0.01f/mL as denoted in the Code of Practice for the Removal of Asbestos 2nd Edition
[NOHSC:2002(2005)].
These results have been verified by the independent environmental consultant.

UNDERSTANDING CONTROL LEVELS FROM RESPIRABLE FIBRE MONITORING
RESULTS
When undertaking respirable fibre monitoring for the purpose of asbestos investigations there
are many different levels of detection that are used for various purposes. The following seeks
the clarify what is meant by ‘control levels’ as found in the Code of Practice for the Safe
Removal of Asbestos [NOHSC:2002 (2005)] which are levels used when monitoring for
airborne asbestos fibres.
The Code of Practice for the Safe Removal of Asbestos [NOHSC:2002 (2005)] states that air
monitoring of potential airborne asbestos fibres be undertaken whenever Asbestos Containing
Materials (ACM) are being removed to make sure that control measures are effective. Fibre
monitoring is a requirement when working on friable ACM and good occupational hygiene
practice in areas of bonded ACM.
The Code of Practice also outlines the control levels for the airborne asbestos fibres that are
detected by fibre monitoring. These control levels are measured in fibres/mL and are used to
assist in determining the effectiveness of control measures put in place to reduce asbestos
exposure in an area during work on ACM. They are occupational hygiene best practice
guidelines and are set to be more sensitive than the National Exposure Standard which are
health based standards created by the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission
(NOHSC).
If the control levels are exceeded, it indicates that current control measures need to be
reviewed and/or further action taken to manage the removal of asbestos. The table below
shows the control levels in fibres/mL and the corresponding action to be taken if those levels
are reached as found in the Code of Practice for the Safe Removal of Asbestos [NOHSC:2002
(2005)] Section 9.8 Air Monitoring.
