We’re overjoyed to welcome you back to Caramoor in person this summer for a full season of outdoor concerts! We missed sharing live music with you and showing off our newly renovated grounds. While our 2021 season may look and feel a bit different from other years, we’ve taken great care to design a summer of music that puts the health and safety of audiences and artists top of mind.

• Most concerts will take place in the Venetian Theater at reduced capacity to allow for social-distancing;• We’ve also added some special experiential performances where you will move through the piece rather than stay seated;• All of this summer’s concerts are shorter, without intermission;• There will be several casual “Concerts on the Lawn” where you can enjoy music from our new Friends Field stage;• For the first time, all concerts in the Venetian Theater have an option for Garden Listening on Friends Field;• We’ve gone digital... wherever possible, from tickets, to program notes, to ordering food and beverages.

Most importantly, we will have lots of great music, in all the genres you love, performed by some of today’s most exciting and inspiring artists.

This Summer, Celebrate the Return of Live Music

“What is American?” PUBLIQuartet ponders this question through a musical kaleidoscope of composers and diverse genres that make up America’s rich musical history. Featuring a reimagination of Dvořák’s “American” Quartet, in which the composer’s original melodies meet PUBLIQuartet’s blues, jazz, and rock-inflected improvisations, the works on this program connect the dots to honor the past, present, and future of American music.

If you merged Miriam Makeba with Nina Simone, added a dose of Tracy Chapman, and sprinkled on some Tina Turner, it might begin to explain Natu Camara. A native of Guinea, this vibrant singer with a passion for social justice mixes West African soul, rock, and pop music to build inter-cultural bridges that bring people together, weaving a tapestry of musical stories and visions of her beloved home. ALL AROUND ELLABrianna Thomas continues to ascend as one of the powerful and engaging voices on the jazz scene today. With her immensely talented band, she captivates audiences with her unique take on standard jazz and contemporary songs, all skillfully infused with her emotional depth and stellar scatting. In this concert, she pays homage to and celebrates Ella Fitzgerald and the wide breadth and scope of her repertoire and instrument. Though Ella was most well-known for singing swing and scat, her pure sound graced many styles and genres including spirituals, blues, bossa nova, and ballads, and the songbooks of Porter, Jobim, Rodgers and Hart, Arlen, Ellington, and many more. She even delved into the Stevie Wonder catalog with spunk, grace, and style. Ella quite literally sang everything!

The Forest is The Crossing’s response to the pandemic. Last fall, when the choir members could not sing safely indoors, they moved outdoors to sing, listen, and connect. At Caramoor you will walk through their performance, while specially designed speakers — ECHOES* Amplification Kits — allow singers to stand 30 feet from each other and from the audience. The speaker kits, positioned close to the path, create an intimate experience, reestablishing the broken relationships between singers and audience members while telling the story of hope and a way forward.

Juxtaposing Nels Cline’s wildly inventive guitar playing and use of electronic effects with the Grammy Nominated Aizuri Quartet’s classically-based but forward-thinking musical outlook, Seven Limbs sets these five musicians in a landscape that is slightly unfamiliar — where the ground under their feet is always shifting a bit in unexpected ways.

The piece is a ritual in seven movements, based on the Seven Limbs, a fundamental

Tibetan Buddhist practice of purification. The limbs are: Prostration; Offering; Confession/Purification; Rejoicing; Requesting the Turning of the Wheel of Dharma; Beseeching the Spiritual Guides Not to Pass Away; and Dedication.

John Luther Adams: Ten Thousand Birds

Sunday, July 114:00pm / Caramoor Grounds / Free

Chamber orchestra Alarm Will Sound will perform John Luther Adam’s Ten Thousand Birds, written for them, within Caramoor’s expansive outdoor setting where the performers and audience will move freely around the space and each other. Ten Thousand Birds is based on the songs of birds that are native to, or migrate through, the area in which the piece is performed. Like Adams’ Inuksuit and songbirdsongs, presented at Caramoor in 2018 and 2019, the piece explores the connections between nature and music, a topic that he’s pursued over the course of his remarkable career.

In a special duo set, Finnish “one-of-a-kind” (The Globe and Mail, Toronto) violinist Pekka Kuusisto and celebrated American composer Nico Muhly team up for an evening of musical exploration, ranging from traditional Finnish music to works by Muhly, Glass, and Pärt, and contemporary works. Kuusisto brings a fresh approach to the concert experience with “the most personal sound of any classical violinist now alive” (The Telegraph, London). Muhly has written over 100 works as diverse as his musical influences in opera, concert, dance, and film.
