Seek first His Kingdomand His righteousness

    Matthew 6:33, NIV

Its not the easiest directive fromGods Word, but when observed,

    it comes with unimaginable

blessing. And when its not, we

have to find things out the hard

    way, as Chris learned.

For years, instead of filling his role

as a husband and father, Chris filled

his body with alcohol. When I let

alcohol come first, I wasnt doing what

I was supposed to do. I was always

    too intoxicated, he remembers.

Chris ended up on the streets,

homeless, and had to call his brother

for help. He suggested that Chriscome to our transitional living

shelter. I had heard about the

    Mission, Chris says, But I

    didnt know what it was

    all about. Thankfully, my

pride didnt get in the way

    from coming.

    After staying at the

    Mission for just a few

    days, Chris talked to one

of our staff members about the Mens

    Recovery Program.

The first thirty days were the

roughest, he says. I couldnt do

what I wanted, which was hard, but

for the best. But Chris persevered,

    participated in the Bible studies,

began working on his GED, was

assigned a job skills training task andalso signed up for our culinary arts

program. Now he has a heart to

volunteer and serve and has rekindled

the love for God that had lain dormant

    in his heart since childhood.

Id like to thank God for giving me

    the opportunity to change, Chris

says. I thank God for the Mission.

    Thanks to your generosity, Chris

learned how to put first things first.

The Mission had a lot more to

offer than I ever imagined. It is not just

a place for the lost and homeless to

get a place to stay. When youre in theprogram, youre part of the Mission

    part of the family.

We look forward to seeing God

continue to work in Chris life, and

thank you for seeking out ways to help

the hurting and homeless among us.

Men like Chris would be lost without

    generous people like you.

    The Bay AreaRescue MissionAddress

Four decades and many days ago,

    compassionate members of our community

brought forth to the Bay Area, a new Mission, conceived in faith, and dedicated to the

proposition that hurting and homeless men,

women and children among us need Christian care.

Now we are engaged in a gracious operation, watching a community so

conceived and so dedicated, serve the homeless among us. We have come to

dedicate a portion of our services to men and women in need of comprehensive

recovery. We also feed, clothe and mentor at-risk and hurting children.

It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. Our guests and

visitors will little note, nor long remember what we say. But they will never forget

how we cared and used our time, resources and energy to provide them with

biblical understanding, practical life-skills and academic training to live more

enriched lives. There is unfinished work to do, but I trust that our caring

volunteers are dedicated to the task before usthe task of making a difference.

There are ample opportunities for volunteers to take a stand and fight for the

freedom our guests need from the despair in their lives:

If youve ever run away from somethingthat eventually led you right to theplace where you belong, Bernadine

    knows how you feel.

    Living in Chicago, Bernadine suffered

physical and verbal abuse from her

boyfriend. Her parents had passed awayyears ago and there wasnt anyone else

around to help. So, Bernadine left all that

she knew back in Illinois and brought her

children to California for a new start.

    Bernadines family stayed with a

friend when they first moved, but it

wasnt a beneficial situation for any of

them. Bernadine and her children ended

up sleeping in their van until, thankfully,

she came across the phone number to theBay Area Rescue Mission.

Bernadine grew up going to church, so

when she got to the Mission, she knew the

spiritual discipline was right. As she says,

When God has been instilled in your life,

you know when youve got one foot in the

grave. I knew I was going to go over the

edge if I didnt change my life. I didnt do a

ten or twelve step program. I took one

stepand gave my life back to God.Thanks to your generosity, Bernadine

found a place to rebuild her future. She and

her children didnt have to worry about

their next meal, proper clothing or where

they would sleep at night. Your gifts gave

Bernadine a chance to look for a job and

provide for her family again. Her children also

participated in many of our youth programs.

In fact, Bernadine says, When it was time

to leave the Mission, my kids didnt want to

go. They love the Bay Area Rescue MissionKings Club, the tutoring, everything.

In 2001, just after graduating from our

    transitional living program, Bernadine

married a wonderful man she met at

church. He took Bernadines four children

as his own and now they have a little one

together, too. They both have full-time jobs

and are raising their family to love the Lord.

They are so thankful for how God used you

to bring them together.I thank the donors a hundred million

    times, Bernadine shares. When my

children and I were out on the streets in the

rain, they made a place for us to go.

Even though Bernadine had to leave her

home back in Chicago, God used you to lead

her to the Bay Area Rescue Mission. Thanks

for your prayers and gifts and may God

continue to guide those in need to our doors.
