Winnebago Audubon losta dear friend on May 7th.Katherine Kay Rill was oneof the forces behind theformation of our Audubonchapter in 1982. Kay was anintegral part of WinnebagoAudubon for over 20 years,

serving as its first Presidentand then as an officer ordirector during that time. Kaywas instrumental indeveloping trails, trail guides, and teacher handbooks forSullivans Woods which is

the Oshkosh Area School Districts outdoor environmentaleducation site. Kay and her husband, Russ, took us on fieldtrips to many wetlands, woods, and prairies over the years. Asa botanist, she knew every plant along the trails we walkedand shared her knowledge of them. And she a great birder, too!

When Kay and Russ made the decision to retire from theAudubon board, our chapter honored them at a reception. ButAudubon was just one part of her life. She earned her MastersDegree from UW Oshkosh and her thesis was A VascularFlora of Winnebago County, Wisconsin. As a lifelong botanist, she gathered a remarkable collection of 8500 mountedspecimens in her herbarium, which she donated to UWOshkosh in 2004. In the 70s she was fighting to have DDTbanned. She worked for The Nature Conservancy contactinglandowners of scientifically significant property. Later she

joined the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources takingpart in a Natural Areas Inventory of several counties. Sheserved on numerous committees; and was not afraid to

address environmental concerns at public hearings. In 2006 she won Honorable Mention from the Council forWisconsin Writers in the Ellis/Henderson Outdoor WritingCategory for her book, Canticle of the Birds. A love of natureand a real concern for the environment are reflected in itspages. It is full of personal observations throughout theseasons with a special emphasis on birds. Kay shared herexperiences about the natural world based on a life-longfascination with living things.

We will miss her enthusiasm, her advice, and her smile. And we thank her for sharing her knowledge and love fornature with all of us.

Do you see the spider in this photograph? I wish thiscould be a color photo because the spider is the exactsame color yellow as the dandelion that it is on. Thesecrab spiders are sedentary hunters and may sit in ambushfor hours. Using good eyesight and legs held ready in agrasping position, they can quickly immobilize and feed oninsects bigger than themselves. This goldenrod crab spideris able to camouflage itself by changing from white to yel-low to pale green to match the flower it is hunting on.

Observed and photographed by Steve & Janet Wissinkon the Ice Age Trail in Kettle Moraine State Park.

of the many frogs that Randy Korb

brought with him for us to see, hold and

    feed.

The weather was perfect for our bird
