Summer 2009 NewsletterTRANSCRIPT
We have reached the end of what has been the most successful year in the school’s history. Our examination results last summer placed us as the 27th
most improved school in the country for GCSE results. This has lead to many accolades and awards. This would not have been possible without
the hard work of students and the dedication of all of our staff.
This year has also seen us further develop our international links with a joint project run by Ms Monyei which included schools in Turkey and
Germany. Our sixth form students have also part icipated in study visits to New York and Barcelona. In addit ion we have been able to support more recreational and revision residential journeys, including trips to the Isle of
Wight, Derbyshire and a watersports trip to the South of France.
Our Evening with the Arts was a resounding success with professional performances from our
students taking a trip round various West End shows, with our own versions of Oliver, Annie, Wicked
and many more.
We have continued to have great sporting success with the highlight being Ms Johnson’s girls’ football team which won the national Futsal competition in Sheffield in June. The cup was as big as many team members! Our students entered Enf ield’s first Public Speaking competition and swept
the board with Nii-larte Lartey winning the key stage 3 trophy, and Daenelle Dawkins winning the key
stage 4 trophy. Well done to all.
As at the end of every academic year we are saying goodbye to a number of staff leaving, notably two members of staff who have given long service to the school. Marina Cash has worked at the school
for thirty one years and she is leaving to work for Teach First, an organisation which trains new teaching staff. Terry Humphries has been at the school for twenty four years and is taking a well earned retirement from his role as Director of Technology. I trust parents and students will join me in
thanking these teachers for the sustained hard work over the years which has contributed to the
school’s improvement.
Finally I wish you all a happy summer break. School will resume for students on the 7th September
2009.
Thank you for your continuing support.

Year 7 Response to the Parents' Evening Questionnaire Results We had a ver y good turnout of 75% of parents at the Consultation Evening on the 30th April, and the students all took home their colour-coded r eports detailing their progress since September. All par ents found this evening useful, and 95% of parents are happy with the transiti on process over the l ast year, which is reall y pleasing. Of course, if you do have any concerns at any poi nt during the year, your child's Form Tutor is the first point of contac t, and a really useful method of communicati on is through the student planner.
Fourteen percent of par ents responded that they do not know who their child's Form Tutor is, and so I have included a table below to act as a reminder*. There has been one recent change after the departure of Ms Cramer - Mr Chaudhar y (Ms Cramer's former co-Tutor) has become 7BM's Form Tutor. I would encourage all parents to regularly use and sign the Student Pl anner. This is in-tended to be at the centre of your child's lear ning, organising their school experience, monitoring attendance and academic pro-gress. It should also contain your child's timetable, which is useful to l ook at each evening in preparation for the next school day. 69% of parents responded that they use this regul arly. Please can all parents have another l ook at the Student Pl anner with your child to make sure that it is being used as fully as possible.
Seventy one percent of par ents feel that their child recei ves a r easonable amount of homewor k. We are currentl y monitoring home-wor k across Year 7 and ensuring that we are making the mos t of the 'FLO' booklets (Further Learning Opportunities), which should be in place for every subjec t and contains all the homewor k for each subject for each term or half term. Please ask your child to look at their FLO booklets is they tell you they have no homewor k! There is also wor k that can be accessed thr ough the website www.lvhs.org.uk on the 'online ser vices' link.
Ninety seven percent of parents are clear about the targets that have been set for their child, and the colour coded 'traffic-light' system has been designed to make it clear at a glance about how well they are doing. If you do have any subjec t specific con-cerns, pl ease contac t the teacher using the student planner. The targets are set on prior at tainment, so based on Year 6 SATS, the CATS exams and data we reported to you during the autumn term.

A successful transition for our Year 7s into Year 8s
It has been a very successful year for our current Year 7 cohort. As Assistant Director of Year, it has been a pleasure for me to watch as the Year 7 s tudents have grown over the year into confident young people who make a positi ve contribution to our school.
At the end of June, I accompanied some of our Year 7 students on a fantas tic trip to the south of France. The focus of the trip was water sports and the s tudents took part in many acti viti es that they had never experienced before, for example canoeing down the Ardeche River for 34 km thr ough a gorge and manoeuvring successfull y down rapids without falling out! Even though some of our students wer e apprehensi ve at first, they soon adapted to it and came away saying that it was one of the best experiences of their lives.
I was extremel y proud of the way that despite various setbacks and being nervous at times, the students all took part fully and di d their absolute best. The students were a huge credit to our school, with impeccable behaviour and an ex-tremel y positi ve at titude.
The year has been ver y nicely r ounded off with the trip to France, the acti vities days and a superb Sports Day. Throughout all of this the behaviour and performance of Year 7 has been excellent and I feel that they are ready for the rollover and to become our new Year 8 cohort.
From September, I will become the Director of Year for the current Year 7 cohort . I am ver y much l ooking forward to this role and
hope I can have a ver y positi ve impact on the achievement, progress and welfare of all the students i n my care. I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of myself and the year 7 students, to thank the current Director of Year, Mr Johns ton,
for all his excellent wor k with our year group and to wish him well in his new school.

Attendance:Attendance:Attendance:Attendance: Attendance has been an important priority for the year group all year as research has shown that attendance is directly linked to achievement. The more you attend, the better your results!! The year group’s overall attendance is currently around 90.6%. We
look forward to improving this in Year 11 and getting our collective attendance up to our target of 92.5%.
Congratulations to all 100% attenders for 2008 – 2009. All these students will receive post cards recognising this.

London and many students worked very well on the Olympics day.
Work Experience:Work Experience:Work Experience:Work Experience: The school received many really positive reports regarding work experience from 22nd – 26th June. Year 11
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for ensuring the success in achieving a high attendance and punctuality
record at the recently concluded GCSE exams. The importance of this process was truly ref lected by the effort and time
allocated by all stakeholders including the students, you the parents, the teaching and non-teaching staff at Lea Valley High
School. I am sure the allocation of these resources will result in a continued improvement in the performance of our
students when the results are released in August. Regardless of the results however, I am sure that in the majority of cases
across the year group, the effort of the students were their best and I would like to thank you for your support. Of course
there is room for improvement and the Senior Leadership Team is already incorporating this into future strategies.
Graduation and Prom
This year our school hosted a graduation ceremony for students completing Key stage 4 (year 11) and Key stage 5 (Sixth
Form). I am very pleased with the enthusiasm shown by all to ensure its success. Graduation is an important part of our
academic year as it celebrates successes and sets bench marks for future generations of our student population.
The Prom was also a great success with the largest participation of graduating students in the school history. Students,
parents and staff responses suggest it was enjoyable. Parents, I must thank and congratulate you for your contribution. The
venue manager has since stated that this was by far the most successful Prom ever held at the venue. I would also like to
thank all the students for their exemplary behaviour that made all of LVHS proud.
I am in the process of the final editing of a DVD chronicling the events of the above that will soon go on sale at £10 each.
Year Book
The number of students making an advance payment for the year book has been disappointing. This is making it extremely
difficult for us to have a professional production and will need to be reviewed at the end of the term. You can still pre-order a
year book by paying the deposit to our finance team during break and lunch
during school days. The full price of the year book is £15.
Finally thank you all for your support to me and my pastoral team for the
last two years and my two predecessors for the last f ive years. Good luck in
Sixth Form, apprenticeships, Further Education College, employment or
whatever you have chosen to pursue. My continued support is unbiased
and my desire to witness your personal successes is unrivalled.

Katie Norbury in Year 11 went on a course this year in Animal Care at Capel

Bronze expedition. Not quite the walk in the park that they anticipated, the students completed a challenging 36 km hike carry-
ing a full kit on the Friday before setting up camp and cooking a hot meal. A 7a.m. start and fry up the next morning ensured that
they continued to make steady progress and despite blisters, hay fever and a minor detour they arrived at their destination on
time and smiling. Students were highly commended by the external assessor for their enthusiasm, ability to work in a team and

New York Firstly, we took twenty one s tudents to New Yor k. It was a fantastic trip packed with acti vities, sightseeing and shopping!
We wer e lucky to take part in a guided tour of the New Yor k Police Museum, the Fire Department Museum and Ground Zero. This was ver y moving and important for our students as they will be usi ng this experience to construct a projec t on the events of 9/11 for their AS-DAN qualification this new academic year. Then we took it easy for a couple of hours on a boat cruising around the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and great views of the island of Manhattan and landmar ks such as Brookl yn Bridge.
That evening we went to see New York Liberty Womens Basketball team play against Indi ana Fever at the Madison Square Garden, seen of so many great sporting occasions. The students absolutel y loved the razzmatazz of American sport, it really was a show on top of the top level sport that we got see. For reference the Li berty l ost a thrilling game in overtime much to the disappointment of Lea Valley’s new Liberty fan club! An amazing event happened while we were in Times Square about to eat dinner. News came through about Michael Jackson’s death on the giant screens in the Square. The traf fic stopped, New Yor kers were on their cell phones and crowds gathered: it was a poignant moment which we’ll never forget. During our coach tour, we passed the Apollo Theatre in Harlem where we saw the Michael Jackson fans congregating for impromptu dancing and
singing in memor y of the singer filmed by many television crews .
Probabl y the favourite moment of the trip for many of the s tudents was the trip up the Empire State Building. We were l ucky to have such brilliant weather and the students spent lots of time and took many photos of the great views of Manhattan. We visited Strawberry Fields in Central Par k which is in remembrance of John Lennon from the Beatles. In the par k we also watched a brilliant street performance of comedy and acrobatics, then rel axed around the
boating lake and walked down the famous tree lined Mall. On the last day we had a chance to look around the shops in 5th Avenue, 7th Avenue and Times Square and we pr obabl y visited every Foot Locker in town!
It really was a brilliant trip, the students were fantas tic and had a great experience of life in such a culturall y exciting city as New York, and it is an experience we will not forget.
Further Sixth Form News: All our Year 13/14 students have now completed their courses and the majority are moving onto Uni versity. We l ook forward to Thursday 20 Augus t when they get their results and finalise their uni versity pl aces, We wish them well in the future.

We look forwar d to Thursday 27 August when students receive their GCSE results and final course choices can be finalised for the Sixth Form. Science Within Science this year, we have seen some exciting developments. As a department, we have been keen to improve the grades that pupils achieve within their Investigative Skills Assignment (ISA) which is an internal assessment of pupils’ investigative skills that is worth 25% of the Core Science, Additional Science or Separate Science GCSEs. For Year 11, this has involved intervention throughout the year, giving pupils the opportunity to improve their ISA grade during and after school time, as well as on the Isle of Wight trip in February. This intervention has led to at least 17 more pupils achieving a C grade, and 10 more B grades compared to
the beginning of the year.
For Year 10, the Core Science ISAs have been completed to a very good standard with over 82% of pupils already being green or blue for their ISA grade. This should mean that less intervention will be required for the Year 10s as they move into Year 11. As Year 9 move into Year 10, the vast majority have already completed a Core Science ISA with some achieving excellent grades
already. This should allow an even greater proportion of these pupils to finish year 10 with a green or even blue ISA grade.
Perhaps our most exciting development as a department is the increasing level of personalisation that we are able to offer our students. As we move into the new academic year, over 40 students will be studying a GCSE in Additional Applied Science in Year 11. It is hoped that this course, which focuses on science in the workplace, will be more engaging for these students and therefore
ultimately allow them to achieve better grades.

The final half term has been a busy but exciting one in the Humani-
ties department.
All students completed exams to the best of their ability and BTEC coursework was submitted, with many students submitting work at a level beyond their Target Minimum Grade. Humanities would like to congratulate every student on their hard work over the last few
months.
Years 7 and 9 enjoyed lessons based around the Olympics on Olympics Day, with Geography lessons based on the sustainability of the 2012 Olympics and History lessons based on the Olympics
through time.
The rollover has seen the addition of two members of staff in the department – Ms Effah and Ms Blasiaks but unfortunately, the end of term will see the departure of Mr Russell and Mr Stanford. Both will be missed by staff and students and we wish them every suc-
cess in their careers.

Our Year 10 and 11 students taking exams this year benefited from coursework development work with us and from special exam arrangements. We finished the Annual Review programme by March and reviewed individual targets with you. We helped our Year 9 and 10 students to choose their options for next year and we have been very pleased that two of our Year 11 students have been accepted for entry to the Sixth Form from September. We were delighted that two Speech & Language students have been given the Jack Petchey Award this year due to their hard work and commitment. In October 2008 it was confirmed that 94% of all 5-16 year olds in the London Borough of Enfiel d are now accessing two hours of high
quality Physical Education and School Sport; 4% above the national average. In light of this outstanding achievement, both the Lea
Valley and Enfield LA SSP’s were awarded the PESSCL strategy Partnershipmark i n January 2009.
The Government’s new Physical Education and Sport Strategy for Young People (PESSYP) states that the ambiti on now is to create a new 5 hour offer for all 5-16 year ol ds by conti nuing to increase the number of 5-16 year ol ds taking part i n at least 2 hours high quality PE and sport at school each week and by creati ng new opportunities for them to participate in a further 3 hours each week of sporting
activity, through school, vol untary and community providers. The new strategy also aims to create new opportuniti es for all 16-19 year
olds to participate in 3 hours each week of sporting acti vities through their colleges or i n local cl ubs.
In terms of PESSYP schools are essentiall y responsible for ensuring that all young people r ecei ve a minimum of 2 hours high quality PE in the curriculum and the opportunity to access at least one hour of school sport beyond the curriculum. Initial figures for Enfiel d indicate
that well over 50% of all young people i n Enfield are already accessing this 3 hour entitlement. At Lea Valley High we currentl y have 55%
of our students accessing this 3 hour entitlement.
School Sport Coaching
The School Sport Coaching programme is one of the works trands that makes up PESSYP. Its aim is to increase the number of coaching hours deli vered through school sport by 675,000 hours nationall y per year by supporting participation of young people into the fourth and
fifth hours of the 5 hour offer.
Schools in Enfiel d have been abl e to recei ve 10 week coaching bl ocks in a variety of focus ac tiviti es throughout this year, including
athletics, basketball, g ymnastics, multi-skills, tag rugby and tr ampolining. To date over 1000 hours of high quality coaching hours have
already been deli vered in the Enfield schools.
Multi-Skills Academies (MUSSA)
During the Easter holidays Julian Golding, our Athletics Community Sports Coach, organised and deli vered two Multi-skills Academies – one at Lea Valley High School and one at Lee Valley Athl etics Centre. The participants attending the Academies included gifted and talented children from Years 5 thr ough to Years 8 from across
the Borough of Enfield.
The MUSSA Academi es provided the young talented athl etes with an excellent op-portunity to work on and develop their basic core movement skills. The Academies focused on improving agility, balance and coordination, aiming to gi ve all the young-
sters a good strong base from which they can build sporting success. The young participants were put through their paces i n a variety of sessi ons, i ncluding fitness
testing, team building and sport specific sessions .
As a direct result of the MUSSA Academies there are now a number of young ath-
letes regularl y attendi ng training sessi ons at Enfi eld & Haringey Athletics Club and in
some cases repr esenting the club in National Junior Athletics League competiti ons.
G & T Programme
Lea Valley’s cl uster of primar y schools, Capel Manor, Ches terfield, Honilands and Prince of Wales were invited to nominate their Year 5
and 6 Gif ted and Talented PE students to take part i n a G & T programme during the spring and summer term.
The pr ogramme takes place every Friday after noon at Lea Valley High School, deli vered by teachers, coaches and Middlesex University
students and includes Games, Dance and Gymnastics elements as well as generic core physical development sessions .

Ardeche Trip Forty two Lea Valley High School students from year 7-9 had the opportunity of a lif etime with a water-sports trip to the South of France. The 8 day trip had 3 days of water-sports on the Mediterranean then a water park en route to Canoeing for 3 days down the Ardeche Gorge. The trip, led by Director of Subject Mr Seller, was outstanding and the students revelled in their new environment demonstrating excellent teamwork and leadership skills. They negotiated challenging rapids over the 36 kilometre river and the smiles at the end were evident for all to see. This trip was one of the elements which will see Lea Valley High School achieve Interna-tional School Status in July coupled with a number of other links. Well done to all

Transport Survey
Following attendance at a transport conference and discussions with Cllr
Vince, the School Council discovered that it is difficult for organisations
to complain to Transport for London about their services, but they accept
complaints from individuals.
We decided to carry out a survey of the different busses that are used by
our students and how many students use each route. We found that
altogether 17 different busses were listed, the main 4 being 217, 317,
327 and 279.
Our results showed that, in the morning, over 300 students use the 279,
over 200 the 217, 150 the 317 and 50 the 142. Slightly less students
travel home by bus .
It seems that the 279 is the biggest problem because at least two other
secondary schools use it at the same time, even though it runs quite
frequently.
Students can help by getting some exercise and walking some of the way
to or from school, especially those of us who wait for the bus at Tesco’s,
just along the road.!
Our next move is to work with the Principal to make a pro-forma letter for
students and parents to use so that they can alert Transport for London
to any problems, as individuals.

On the 29th and 30th of June Lea Valley High School held their annual activities days. One day was set aside for an Olympic Focus with the students in Year 7-10 taking part in curriculum driven Olympic activ ities. The lessons planned by the staff were excellent and ranged from what an Olympic athlete would eat to the languages of the modern era. The lessons planned will be
shared with other Enfield schools in the lead up to 2012. The second part of the day enabled staff and students to explore a range of different activities including golf, f ishing, river boat cruises, tour of London, making a meal, a day with the Army and many more. The student’s behaviour was excellent during the whole two days and really created a community spirit between staff and students. One example was Miss Eggleton’s novel
idea based around the mad hatters tea party!
Mad Hatters Tea Party Both Miss Lawrence and I thought this would be a great opportunity for students to be creative and be able to design and make a product in one day! The students bought in cakes, sweets, drinks etc and Miss Lawrence and I provided the equipment. By the end of the day the classroom looked like Tinkerbell had paid us a v isit with the amount of glitter and sequins that were on the floor. As you can see f rom the pictures, some fabulous hats were made and we all had a very
productive and enjoyable day.
A huge thank you must go to the staff for their novel ideas as well as Jo Danischewsky and the

Ecology Workshop Ecology Workshop Ecology Workshop Ecology Workshop A small group of students took part in a 2 hour ecology workshop at Capel Manor Gar-dens. They looked at wildlife habitats, different medicinal and cosmetic uses of plants and exotic animals. After exploring the gardens and a picnic lunch, they had a surprise encounter with Susan Boyle in the maze! Another highlight was watching baby piglets
play around in their pen at the farm area.
Capel Manor Gardens was a perfect spot for a very hot day with lots of water features and greenery, a cafe where they sell food made from the garden produce - and ice-
creams, which we enjoyed sitting under the trees. If you live locally and haven't been there yet, Capel Manor Gardens is well worth a visit

Athletics Season 2009 After the amazing successes of the Sports Hall Athletics Season the Lea Valley High School students were well prepared for a great Track and Field season in the English Schools Athletics and Enfield Borough competitions. The Year 8 Junior boys team qualified for the South East of England final and amassed a total of 461 points which would have qualified them for the national final (top 12 schools in England) last year. Unfortunately this year that was the 13th best score in the country and not quite enough to qualify. Still a fantastic achievement considering this was the first year we had entered the competition. The pupils worked extremely hard in training learning new activities like hurdles and hammer. The team sheet is attached with the students scores but special mention should go to Akeem Membar, Murat Colak and Daniel Obobi who stepped in to cover any events at short notice. Also many thanks to Mr. Golding, Miss Goddard and all of the PE staff that lead training sessions during lunch times and spent many evenings
supporting pupils in the range of competitions we enter.
The Year 7 and Year 8 boys and girls were also involved in the first ever Sports College Track and Field Cup which took place at New River Stadium between Lea Valley High School and St. Thomas More RC School. Lea Valley won both Year 8 competitions but St. Thomas More were victorius in both Year 7 events and won the overall competition by just a few points. Another trophy for us to
strive for next year.
The high standards set by the Junior Boys and Girls at Lea Valley High School was reflected in a brilliant sports day. The level of competition was extremely high as shown by the number of records broken on the day. Congratulations to all the students who participated and won points for their form. The levels of participation and standard of kit and behaviour were excellent. A big thank you to Miss Johnson and Miss Goddard for organising the event and to all the staff for their support in officiating, and supervising
the many spectators in such hot conditions.

Turkish Trip Our Turkish trip to Antalya Lisesi SchoolOur Turkish trip to Antalya Lisesi SchoolOur Turkish trip to Antalya Lisesi SchoolOur Turkish trip to Antalya Lisesi School
On the 28th April at 9:30am Ms Cullen, Ms Amico, Mr. Oyuncu and four students, Yinka Coker and Harry Scowen from Year 9 and Berivan Kesen and Sasha Scowen from Year 10, left Lea Valley School for Gatwick airport. We had lunch at the
airport before we boarded the plane, we all enjoyed our meals very much especially Harry.
We got on the plane at 2:15pm and the journey was four hours long. We landed at 8pm Turkish time at Antalya airport. We were all very tied and were picked up by a cab and taken to the Best Western Hotel. When we arrived at the hotel we
had dinner but soon after eating we rushed back to our very impressive room to watch the football.
On Wednesday 29th April, we walked from our hotel to the Antalya Lisesi School. When we arrived we went straight to the conference room and were greeted by the Principal and two English teachers. We were informed of the plan for the next two days. Whilst we were having a tour of the school we were also filmed by a Turkish television crew and Yinka was asked to be interviewed. The Enfield County girls helped us to download our reports and logged them on the SPLASH website.
Later on we had lunch in the school canteen, the choice of food was very limited and consisted of rice, stew and yoghurt.
After lunch we were taken to the school playground to be shown a traditional Turkish dance by the students. There were four boys and two girls all traditionally dressed and they even invited us to join in. We found the Turkish students to be very
friendly and they took particular interest in us boys.
Later on in the afternoon we walked down to the beach to go on a two hour boat tour. Mr. Oyuncu was very keen for us to go on the Jack Sparrow boat, we had to make him happy so we went on the Jack Sparrow boat! While we were on the boat we socialized with the German, Turkish and the Enfield County students, we listened to music, chatted and drank apple tea. Later that evening we attended a welcome dinner at a restaurant by the beach and as always the food was delicious
and Harry ordered two meals, and again when we went back to the hotel we watched more football.
On Thursday 30th April we went back to Antalya Lisesi school. Whilst us boys went to join an English class the girls joined in a PE lesson. The students asked us lots of question about our culture and our school in Enfield and we found the class to be very lively and friendly. Later that day we were taken to a museum and saw lots of ancient artifacts from Antalya’s history. This followed with a trip to the market in the old town. Ms Cullen, Ms Amico, Sasha and Berivan went in a different direction to us boys and Mr. Oyuncu. Berivan did the translation for the girls group whilst Mr. Oyuncu did the translation for the boys group. The old market town is very hilly so we all shopped until our legs dropped off and spent our remaining
Turkish money.
Umm more food, we had our evening meal in a traditional Turkish restaurant, Harry was happy to be fed again. We went back to the hotel to get packed and say our goodbyes and then headed off to the airport, our flight was at 7pm and we
arrive back in England at 12 midnight.
We all had a very enjoyable experience and were made to feel very welcome by all the staff and students at the school.
This was an experience that we will never forget.

Summer Schools at Central Enfield CLC
Using computers and the internet: With the long summer holidays upon us now, you may find that your child/children will be using the computer/internet more frequently. I would therefore like to remind you of some e-safety tips which you may wish to consider when allowing your child/children to use the computer. This information has been taken from www.parentscentre.gov.uk which is just an extract from a huge set of resources available so please visit this site online or contact us here at the school if you would like any further information.
Top 10 safety tips on how to keep your child safe online
1. Consider using internet filtering software, walled gardens and child-friendly search engines. Use your browser's controls as some offer differing degrees of security for each family member.
2. Check out what child protection services your Internet Service Provider (ISP) offers - do they filter for spam, for instance? If not, ask them why.
3. Keep the computer in a communal area of the house, where it's easier to monitor what your children are viewing.
4. Tell children not to give out their personal details. If they want to subscribe to any ser vices online, make up a family email address to receive the mail.
5. Children love to chat, but make sure they only use moderated chat rooms and encourage them to introduce you to their online friends.
6. Encourage your children to tell you if they feel uncomfortable, upset or threatened by anything they see online.
7. Involve your children in writing your own family code of acceptable internet use. Remember that what's acceptable for a teenager isn't necessarily OK for a primary school-aged child, so get their input.
8. Computer kit is expensi ve so bear in mind that a child with a laptop may be vulnerable when carrying it to and froschool.
9. The web's a great resource for homework and research, but remember to use more than one site in research to get broad, balanced information and always reference your research sources.
10. Surf together. Go online with your children and become part of their online life. The key to safe surfing is communication.

On the first day of any absence please ring the school on the attendance line – 01992 704646 or get a message to the SWC for your child’s year group to let them know why your child is absent. A note describing the reason for the absence must be sent in with the child on their first day of return to school.
Days off for shopping, birthdays etc are not acceptable and will not be authorised. Continued unauthorised absence may lead to you being prosecuted for your child’s non-attendance. Prosecutions may result in fines of up to £2,500 per parent per child. You may also run the risk of receiving a Penalty Notice for your child’s continued unauthorised absence. This means that for students with unauthorised absence from school (i.e. any absence that the school has not given permission for) then their parent/carer may be subject to a prompt fine of either £50 (28 days) or £100 (42 days). Penalty notices will be used as a deterrent to prevent a
pattern of unauthorised absence developing. They will be issued by post to a student’s home after just one warning and cases of absences without acceptable cause will also include excessive holidays in school term time and persistent late attendance.
Punctuality
Punctuality is an important l ife-skil l for students to learn. It is important that your child arrives at school on time. Arriving late can be very wasteful of children’s
school time – just 10 minutes lateness each day is the equivalent of over 6 full days in a year. Regular attendance including punctuality helps your child become reliable and organised – two qualities valued by employers.
All students MUST be in school by the latest 8.45am everyday. Any pupil arriving after this time will be marked as late and may be marked as an Unauthorised
Absence. Any student that arrives late to school in the morning will be kept for a 15 minute detention after school on a Tuesday or Thursday. Any student that is late twice in a week will be given an automatic DOY detention which is 40 minutes.
