A scenic ride is planned on Saturday, August 27, for the 13th Annual Hospice of Dubuque Tour de Dubuque. Custom Riders, Inc., the Dubuque Bicycle Club and area classic car clubs invite everyone to join them as the motorcycles and cars head north to beautiful Guttenberg, down to Balltown, west to Petersburg and finally to the 6 pm final destination at Summer’s Last Blast, downtown Dubuque. The bicycle riders will head to their destination of Breitbach’s in Balltown, where all three groups will meet at approximately 2:15 for food, prizes and fun.

Registration begins at 10 am at 7G Distributing, 5035 Chavenelle, with all groups departing by noon. Riders are encouraged to collect pledges in advance of the ride! There is a $10 entry fee for anyone wishing to ride that has not collected pledges. Pledge forms are available at the Hospice of Dubuque office, www.hospiceofdubuque.org and on page 10 of this newsletter. Prizes will be awarded to those with the highest amount of pledges in each category.

All proceeds from Tour de Dubuque directly benefit patients and families of Hospice of Dubuque and ensure that anyone affected by a terminal illness has the option of compassionate hospice care. The classic cars themselves hold many unique stories. One story, told by Delmer Walton, describes his love for a 1954 Mercury Monterey and how restoring an auto took him and his wife, Rose, full circle on their journey of life together. See this heartwarming story on page 3.

At a program this spring, I heard the following: “Self sacrifice is not an impulse; it is always a choice.” I am privileged to serve as Hospice of Dubuque’s Executive Director where I witness self sacrifice on a daily basis. During my 20 years with this organization, I have observed staff members, volunteers, board members, family members and caregivers sacrificing so that others may receive dignified and compassionate care at the end of life. I have also observed countless community members generously organize and implement fundraising events to support their community nonprofit hospice.

As we reach the midpoint of summer, we at Hospice of Dubuque look forward to several of these community fundraising events that benefit, in whole or in part, this organization. Various local groups and individuals who value the care provided by Hospice of Dubuque have been hard at work this summer planning a variety of events—a fish fry, a golf tournament, a benefit ride and even a hooley! These community members know that Hospice of Dubuque is truly neighbor helping neighbor at a most vulnerable time in life. They also know that, at some time, all human beings experience death and they want to ensure the exemplary services of Hospice of Dubuque are available for themselves, their loved ones and their tri-state neighbors.

As tri-state caregivers and family members give of themselves to support their loved ones at the end of life, they can rest assured that the Hospice of Dubuque staff, volunteers, board members and supporters remain committed to their needs. These “hospice people” offer their time, talent and treasure to ensure the continuation of the Hospice of Dubuque mission of providing compassionate care for the terminally ill and their loved ones. Thank you to all who allow Hospice of Dubuque to journey with them and their loved ones, and thank you to all who choose to support the Hospice of Dubuque mission. Each day at Hospice of Dubuque, the choice of self sacrifice is evident and that is truly a blessing to all in the tri-states.

awarded Hospice of Dubuque a total of $100,257.61. Thank you!

The Beach Boys played as Delmer Walton reminisced about meeting his wife, Rose. “Those were the days—listening to good old 50’s music, riding in a 1954 Mercury Monterey hardtop with the windows down and my girl by my side.” He spoke of how Rose loved going for rides and how he even taught her to drive in the Merc. As time went on, Delmer bought other cars and eventually sold the Merc for $25. Throughout the next years, Rose and Delmer Walton raised four sons: Terry, Tim, Todd and Tony. The memories and connection Delmer and Rose had for that ’54 Merc held a special place in their hearts. The boys grew up listening to their stories and knew how much that car meant to their parents. When Tony had the opportunity to buy a 1954 Monterey, he immediately called his dad. Although Delmer found it difficult to pass up this rare opportunity, his beloved Rose was struggling with lung cancer and, as her caretaker, he decided not to purchase the car. When Rose rebounded from her latest fight with the cancer, Delmer knew he needed to find the car and, just like in the good old days, take Rose for one more ride. The Walton boys tracked down the seller and purchased the partially restored car. The whole family dedicated many hours restoring the car to the original condition of Delmer’s 1954 Mercury Monterey. Rose became very competitive searching Ebay for needed parts while Delmer, the boys and their families all pitched in with the sanding and painting. During the restoration process, Rose’s health deteriorated and her doctor recommended hospice care. When Rose was admitted into Hospice of Dubuque, one of her first goals was to ride in the Merc with Delmer. Her family worked around the clock to help Rose achieve this goal. On Labor Day 2010, Delmer and Rose proudly drove the restored 1954 Mercury Monterey two-door hardtop in the Benton Labor Day Parade. The entire family was proud of the car and how they had all worked together to see Delmer and Rose ride in the parade.

As the family experienced this difficult yet meaningful time, Rose was able to control her pain and meet some of her end-of-life goals. Hospice of Dubuque provided care for Rose and support to the family as they prepared for those last days and also helped the Walton’s continue to live their lives with as much normalcy as possible. Rose died Saturday, October 2, with the love and support of her family by her side.

As Delmer said, “During a difficult time you can choose to laugh or cry. Our family chose to enjoy our time together and let Hospice of Dubuque provide the support we needed.”

Rain forced the annual Tree of Life Memorial Service indoors for the second straight year, but the spirit of the evening was evident by the standing-room-only crowd gathered in the Knights of Columbus Hall. Mary Ellyn Jensen gave an inspiring witness of her journey after the loss of her husband while music by The Lads filled the hall. Each guest received a seed card, courtesy of Ferry-Morse Seed Company, as arranged by Theisen’s Home-Farm-Auto, to plant in remembrance of their loved ones. The Tree of Life in Washington Park beamed with over 1,350 lights and remained lit through Memorial Day.

The Hospice of Dubuque Board of Directors, Staff and Volunteers consider it a privilege to host the Tree of Life Service each year. Thank you to those who joined us at the service and those that contributed to over $32,000 in support of the Tree of Life and Hospice of Dubuque. Also, our gratitude to Mary Ellyn Jensen for sharing her story, and members of The Lads: Laura Hess, Mike Martin, Rob McCullough, Jim Mueller, Pat Reidy and Kevin Walsh for adding their musical talents to the evening. On Monday, April 18, The Farley Commercial Club hosted a Spring Fling with the Lemon Sisters at the Farley Memorial Hall. The show included music from the 50’s and 60’s with special appearances by Dick Clark, Elvis Presley and The Supremes. The price of admission was either a donation of canned goods to the Epworth Food Pantry or a gift of cash to Hospice of Dubuque. As a result of the generosity of The Farley Commercial Club and those who attended, Hospice of Dubuque received $4,100. We thank the Lemon Sisters, those involved with planning the event and the large crowd who attended this fun show.

The “Big Duffer” Hospice Golf OutingDo you have fond memories of someone who was special to you, loved the game of golf and whose life journey was made easier by Hospice of Dubuque? Get your family together for the 4-person best shot Big Duffer Golf Outing on Saturday, July 23, at Lacoma Golf Course. This tournament is an opportunity for families and individuals to play golf in honor or memory of their own “Big Duffer.” Golfing begins at 1 pm. The cost, which includes green fees, prizes, golf cart and a grill your own steak dinner, is $70 per person for 18-holes and $55 for 9-holes. If you aren’t a golfer, join the group for dinner, drawings and prizes at 5:30 for $25 per person.

Spiritual care for spiritual distressReverend Penny Thomsen, MDiv, Spiritual Care Coordinator

One of my greatest rewards at Hospice of Dubuque is providing spiritual care for patients and families who are in spiritual distress. Providing care for spiritual distress is slightly different than when we help meet someone’s spiritual needs. When we meet someone’s spiritual needs, we make sure the spiritual care a person has been receiving continues during their end-of-life care.

Our hospice team is always assessing for spiritual distress, but anyone can look for signs as well. Spiritual distress may include feelings of anxiety, anger, confusion, guilt, pain, loss, disappointment and despair regarding anything meaningful, spiritual or religious in the patient or family members’ lives.

Spiritual care provided for spiritual distress can be as simple as listening while someone resolves his or her own distress. Other times, we may provide a spiritual activity, such as showing nature pictures, reading sacred texts, praying or singing songs at the bedside. Meaningful and specific end-of-life religious rituals can also be arranged with the patient or family’s religious leader or with me, an ordained minister. Belonging to a particular church, denomination or religion is not required to receive spiritual care from me or anyone on the hospice team.

Hopefully, any spiritual care provided by our hospice team contributes to our patients and their families moving to a place of spiritual peace, rest and strength. If you need spiritual care, please talk to your hospice team. Improving the quality of our patients’ lives is always our goal.

The Irish Hooley, August 27Gaelic Storm Returns!

For generations the highlight of the Irish social life was the Hooley. Celebrate the Irish heritage by joining the Dubuqueland Irish as they present the Hooley on Saturday, August 27, at the Alliant Amphitheater, 600 Star Brewery Drive. Tickets for the Irish Hooley are $8 in advance and $12 the day of the event. Children under 10 are free. A new approach for Alzheimer’s diseaseKaty Morrow, RN, BSN, CHPN, Nursing Services Director

Behavior-Based Ergonomics Therapy (BBET) is a program that was pioneered at the St. Leonard Living Community’s Alzheimer’s Care Unit in Centerville, Ohio. BBET was developed with the help of experts from many disciplines as well as family members and physicians. The project was led by Govind Bharwani, PhD and his daughter, Meena Bharwani. Their approach is very easy to initiate and their methods make quite a difference in the lives of those living with Alzheimer’s disease.

The BBET project was developed with two goals in mind—to reduce falls and to reduce patient stress. These goals are accomplished by developing an approach to quickly change the patient’s environment before behaviors caused by boredom or stress escalate. The involvement of many is required to successfully implement this approach, including direct care-giving staff, the patient’s family or significant others and other team members.

All of the tools for the BBET program were made available to the Alzheimer’s Care Unit staff at St. Leonard’s, including CD and DVD players, a music library, games and puzzles suitable for dementia patients. Each resident had a “memory prop box” in which special items from family members and loved ones were placed. As Dr. Bharwani states, “These items are often sentimental and provide comfort and joy for the residents such as family photos, magazines, stuffed animals, etc.” The tools were coded in the patient’s careplan to identify which were most effective for the patient. When increasing stress was noted in a resident, the caregivers utilized these items to provide the resident with immediate relief while also continuing to perform care tasks. As Dr. Bharwani points out, “Caregivers can provide emotional support as well as physical/clinical support without increasing their overall workload.”

Within six months of implementing this program at St. Leonard’s Alzheimer’s Care Unit, changes were noted in the residents. The fall rate was reduced by 35%. Because interventions for stress were readily available, residents ate and slept better with less agitation and fewer adverse behaviors. With a calmer atmosphere on the unit, residents were more likely to socialize and families were very pleased.

We can do this for our own patients and loved ones. A bag of tricks, so to speak, that is specific to the individual could be developed for use in times of increasing boredom or stress. Items chosen during peaceful times appear to be able to reduce the stressful times when the individual needs distraction. The memory box could be helpful in those times when the individual is worrying about something that we can’t understand or when the individual is wandering, searching and becoming agitated. These favorite items could also be useful when the individual is in a pattern of asking the same question over and over again. The box would soon be filled with tried and true things that change the thoughts from worry to interest, from perseverating to something distracting. As the disease changes and progresses, the items in the box could also change.

I would like to thank everyone who joined me at the various retirement events held in my honor. Although I know I have not done this work alone, I was flattered to see so many of the people who helped to make Hospice of Dubuque what it is today. To those of you who sent cards and warm wishes for my retirement, I appreciated the notes so much. The support and competence of the community volunteers and staff has been one of the gratifications of this position. Although I look forward to the next phase of my life, I am comforted to know that I leave Hospice of Dubuque in the proficient and caring hands of those I leave behind. The care provided at Hospice of Dubuque is made special by the dedicated people who embrace the Hospice of Dubuque mission. Thank you again for your many acts of kindness that sent me on my way with such wonderful memories. I will truly miss you all.

Hospice of Dubuque welcomes employees ...

Kayla Feller recently joined Hospice of Dubuque as an accountant. Kayla grew up in the Dubuque area and currently lives in Epworth with her three wonderful children, Calvin, Jessica and Laura. Kayla earned her Bachelor’s degree in Accounting in December 2010 while working full time at Wartburg Theological Seminary. Kayla feels blessed to be working at Hospice of Dubuque and being involved in such a wonderful organization.

Melissa Gansemer, RN, joined Hospice of Dubuque in April as a registered nurse. Melissa is a graduate of Wahlert High School and NICC and previously worked at Luther Manor. Melissa has three boys, ages 20, 13 and 10, and a 2-year-old grandson. She enjoys going to the boys sporting events, which leaves little time for anything else. Melissa is very excited to be at Hospice of Dubuque and thanks everyone for welcoming her to the team.

Chelsea Deines, MSW, has rejoined Hospice of Dubuque as a Social Worker. Chelsea and her husband Chris, who is a student at Wartburg Theological Seminary, recently returned to Dubuque after Chris’ appointment in Osseo, WI. During their year in Osseo, Chelsea and Chris welcomed their first child, Mollie, to the Deines family. Congratulations and welcome back to Hospice of Dubuque!

Hospice of Dubuque was saddened to learn of the death of Merle “Sid” Hunt, on June 21. Sid, and his wife Dorothy, were among the original Hospice of Dubuque volunteers and together they received the 1997 Dr. Larry Kukla Volunteer of the Year Award. We join many families in remembering Sid and Dorothy’s generosity to others and extend our sincere sympathy to family and friends.

In May, Jennifer Cavanagh, MSW, RN, CHPN, transitioned to the position of Program Compliance Coordinator. This position was previously held by Judi Carr, RN, MA, who has assumed her new role as a Hospice of Dubuque team nurse. Congratulations to Jennifer and Judi!

In appreciation for all that the Hospice of Dubuque

Volunteers do throughout the year, we invite you to attend

lunch and a movie.

A group of dedicated volunteers meet every Wednesday afternoon at the James Kennedy Public Library in Dyersville. This group, known as Sit & Stitch, is comprised of approximately 17 members who design and crochet colorful laprobes for Hospice of Dubuque patients. Their meetings consist of visiting and taste testing new recipes as they keep busy crocheting their Navajo, Broken Arrow or Spiderweb designs. Thank you ladies for your donation of time and talent to the patients and families of Hospice of Dubuque.

The Sit and Stitch Group is always looking for yarn donations. If you have extra yarn, please drop it off at the Hospice of

Dubuque office or call Debbie at 563.582.1220.

Sit & StitchDebbie Horch, Volunteer Coordinator

Hospice of Dubuque will be offering a volunteer education course beginning September 12 through October 24. The seven-week course will be held on Mondays from 3–5 pm in the Theisen Education Center for those interested in providing direct patient care. If you are considering volunteering, or would like more information regarding the course, call Debbie Horch, Volunteer Coordinator, at 563.582.1220.

Lunch and refreshments will be served along with popcorn. The movie is a short film that features so many stars that we can’t name them all. This will take the place of the summer picnic. Stop by for a little or stay for a while!

All meetings will be held at 6:00 pm in the Theisen Education Center,
