ENG—EnglishCourse descriptions, prerequisites, corequisites >>>> www.mccc.edu/courses/ENGNote: Initial selection of an English composition course is determined by a placement test. Call the Liberal Arts Division or the Academic Testing Center for details. English courses are sequential. Therefore, a student must satisfy the composi-tion requirement — with a minimum grade of C in ENG102 — before taking literature (200 level) courses. Applicability of credits in courses below the 100 level toward degree requirements is limited.

Note: The English Department offers sections of English Composition I and II that are specifically designated for non-native speakers of the English language. For more information, contact Fran Davidson, (609) 570-3852. ENG101/102 TVC: Students who register for TVC (distance learning) classes of ENG101 or ENG102 are required to write two essays, one at the beginning of the semester and one at the end, in the Academic Testing Center on the West Windsor campus. Further information about this requirement can be obtained by calling (609) 570-3308.

A placement test measuring English and mathematics skills is a requirement in the MCCC admissions process to determine student eligibility for certain courses and programs. The exam does not affect admission to the college. Completed in approximately two and a half hours, the test includes a timed essay followed by untimed multiple choice questions. Prospective students are encouraged to thoroughly review the sample essays and practice questions found in the placement testing section of the MCCC website.

Exemptions from Testing• 540 on the SAT critical reading exempts students from the English testing;• 530 on the SAT mathematics exempts students from the basic math testing, but

qualifies students for college-level math placement testing;• 21 on Math ACT and 21 on English ACT exempts students from the English

and basic math testing and qualifies students for the college-level math placement testing;

• A degree from an accredited U.S. college or university (transcript required);• Evidence (college transcript) of college-level English or mathematics courses.

All documentation of scores and transcripts should be submitted to the Enrollment Services Office upon application to the college.

If English is not your first language, call 609-570-3438 to arrange for the English as a Second Language placement test.

A growing number of students are taking distance learning courses through MercerOnline. Taking courses via Internet and television allows students to choose when and where they learn. MercerOnline offers convenience and flexibility to those with busy lives and unconventional schedules. Success in an online or television course requires commitment and high motivation to complete assignments.

Taking an Online Course (Web-Based)To take an online course, you need access to a computer, Microsoft Word-compatible software, a web browser such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, and reliable access to the Internet. Taking a Blended Course (In-Person and Online)Blended courses, involving both web technology and the traditional classroom, deliver the best of both worlds: on-campus instruction and distance learning wrapped into one course. “Face to face” meeting times are noted on your schedule.

IMPORTANT: It is highly suggested that you attend one of these orientations on the West Windsor Campus or online, especially if this is your first time taking an Online Course. Payment and Refund PolicyPrior to the start of any semester (or equivalent), a student can freely modify his or her schedule by adding and dropping classes without approval or penalty. Any monies paid by the student (tuition and fees) for a course dropped during this period will be refunded.

Once a semester begins, students must drop any class prior to the deadline specified below in order to be eligible for a refund for that class. There are no refunds other than full refunds, which are processed each Tuesday (after the start of classes) in the form of a check and mailed to the student.

Deadlines for refund eligibility differ according to class session length. A class must be dropped “no later than” the specified number of business days following the initial meeting day of that class:

within 3 days ...for classes lasting more than 13 weekswithin 2 days ...for classes lasting from 10 to 13 weekswithin 1 day ...for all other classes

A course dropped anytime after refund eligibility for that course ends will be processed as a withdrawal, with no refund of tuition or fees. Please be aware that dropped classes or withdrawals can cause adjustments to any financial aid awards, resulting in you having a balance due to the college for your tuition.

No refund of tuition or fees will be made to a student who is withdrawn (WI) from a course by an instructor due to non-attendance or who is dismissed from the college for cause.
